Book excerpt: One of the committees of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) examined the vocational education and training policies of its member countries. The committee identified a number of significant policy directions that are emerging in OECD countries. Among these are an enhanced political commitment to providing vocational training, a strengthening of the economic and social roles of vocational education, and a raising of the quality of vocational education, training and skills of the labor force. Analysis of the vocational education and training policies of individual OECD-member countries reveals particular emphasis on the contributions vocational education can bring to innovation, to technology, to the supply of labor, and to productivity and economic development. In addition, many OECD-member countries are in the process of reforming their mechanisms for financing initial and further skills training. If these reforms are to succeed, the following key issues must be addressed: the share of costs among firms, and between the state and firms; the costs of combined work and training; and the development of financing arrangements that are flexible enough to respond to changes in work content and in the labor force. Book Synopsis Socio-Economic Perspectives on Vocational Skill Development: Emerging Research and Opportunities by : Okolie, Ugochukwu Chinonso
Download or read book Socio-Economic Perspectives on Vocational Skill Development: Emerging Research and Opportunities written by Okolie, Ugochukwu Chinonso and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vocational skill development (VSD) has the capacity to contribute to poverty reduction because it serves as the key to job creation and inclusive growth. As developed nations have been faced with high youth and graduate unemployment rates, basic education and vocational skill development have become a priority of development cooperation activities. However, there is a realization that measures to improve skill training can only be successful if they are in harmony with employment and economic policies. Socio-Economic Perspectives on Vocational Skill Development: Emerging Research and Opportunities is a collection of innovative research on the methods and applications of equipping individuals with relevant work skills and implementing effective skills systems that can lead to economic growth and high levels of productivity. While highlighting topics including human capital, professional development, and skill gaps, this book is ideally designed for managers, business professionals, policymakers, academicians, researchers, and management students seeking the current understanding of the strategic role of skill development at different levels of the socio-economic system.

Book Synopsis Contemporary Challenges for Vocational Education by : Katy B. Greenwood
Download or read book Contemporary Challenges for Vocational Education written by Katy B. Greenwood and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This yearbook contains 24 reports concerning the following seven challenges currently facing vocational education: new needs for job training, reexamining value bases, a growing network of vocational educators, reflecting on past effectiveness, the continuing challenge to meet individual and special needs, strengthening curricula and instruction, and new issues and directions for the 1980s. Covered first are changing lifestyles, economy, and inflation in the 1980s and vocational education in an era of supply-side economic policy. In a discussion of reexamining value bases, the following issues are addressed: debates over terminology, redefining the work ethic for the 1980s, early values underlying vocational education, and cultural foundations of black leadership. Commentary is provided on the changing fortunes of the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA), apprenticeship training and vocational education as partners, and trends in business and industry training. Analyzed next are vocational solutions to youth problems, criticisms of job training, the contribution of vocational education, increasing opportunities for entrepreneurs, and women in vocational education. Competency-based instruction, employability skills training, and secondary school vocational education are examined. Described next are possible roles of vocational education in economic development and reindustrialization as well as multi-agency system linkages and coordination. (MN)

Book Synopsis Vocational Education and Training in Times of Economic Crisis by : Matthias Pilz
Download or read book Vocational Education and Training in Times of Economic Crisis written by Matthias Pilz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a broad range of approaches and methodologies relevant to international comparative vocational education and training (VET). Revealing how youth in transition is affected by economic crises, it provides essential insights into the strengths and weaknesses of the various systems and prospects of VET in contexts ranging from North America to Europe, (e.g. Spain, Germany or the UK) to Asia (such as China, Thailand and India). Though each country examined in this volume is affected by the economic crisis in a different way, the effects are especially apparent for the young generation. In many countries the youth unemployment rate is still very high and the job perspectives for young people are often limited at best. The contributions in this volume demonstrate that VET alone cannot solve these problems, but can be used to support a smooth transition from school to work. If the quality of VET is high and the status and job expectations are good, VET can help to fill the skills gap, especially at the intermediate skill level. Furthermore, VET can also offer a realistic alternative to the university track for young people in many countries.
