Book excerpt: Vlads Disciples is a book about a cult that worships Vlad the Impaler and believes in the vampiric legends surrounding him. This cult believes that by ritualistically sacrificing people and drinking their blood on the first night of the full moon, they will achieve immortality. After sacrificing their victims, the cult revels in the night with BDSM practices as they were recruited by the leader of their cult, the mayor of Boston, from various BDSM clubs around the state. The book culminates in this group sacrificing two of their own to achieve immortality and having a party at which their leader reveals the new identities that he has set up for each of them around the globe. However, unknown to the leader, a member of his elite inner circle lost his submissive the day before in a car accident. Disillusioned and let down when he realizes that they are not immortal, the man confronts the leader at a party he throws for the cult two days after they all achieved their immortality, only to find out that the leader knew all along that they were still mortal and had poisoned everyone at the party. Feeling betrayed, the man shoots and kills the leader before turning the gun on himself. The police, responding to the calls of shots fired, find everyone dead and a letter in the pocket of the man who had gone to confront the leader, confessing the entire story. Odd-numbered chapters in the book detail the sacrifices that this cult makes and their BDSM revelations. Even numbered chapters detail the police investigation and other goings-on in the story.

Book excerpt: Despite Mongolia's centrality to East Asian history and culture, Mongols themselves have often been seen as passive subjects on the edge of the Qing formation or as obedient followers of so-called "Tibetan Buddhism," peripheral to major literary, religious, and political developments. But in fact Mongolian Buddhists produced multi-lingual and genre-bending scholastic and ritual works that profoundly shaped historical consciousness, community identification, religious knowledge, and practices in Mongolian lands and beyond. In Sources of Mongolian Buddhism, a team of leading Mongolian scholars and authors have compiled a collection of original Mongolian Buddhist works--including ritual texts, poetic prayers and eulogies, legends, inscriptions, and poems--for the first time in any European language.

Download or read book Contemporary Thought on Nineteenth Century Socialism written by Ophélie Siméon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first volume will showcase the richness and diversity of the Owenite movement, which spanned decades (from Owen’s first published books in 1813-16 to the late 1840s), political allegiances, genders and continents. This volume therefore calls for a variety of sources not easily available elsewhere - including books, pamphlets, correspondence and newspaper articles - and a variety of often overlapping voices - from Chartists to early co-operators, secularists, non-British Owenites and proponents of women’s rights. The sheer range of Owenite ventures (intentional communities, co-operatives, labour exchanges and experiments in popular education) will be covered, thus blending social and political history. The attempt to map the Owenite movement will eventually lead to the identification of its shared, core principles and values: internationalism, co-operation, concepts of political change, and above all, the ideal of community.

Download or read book Whitman's Drift written by Matt Cohen and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2017-07-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American nineteenth century witnessed a media explosion unprecedented in human history. New communications technologies seemed to be everywhere, offering opportunities and threats that seem powerfully familiar to us as we experience today’s digital revolution. Walt Whitman’s poetry reveled in the potentials of his time: “See, the many-cylinder’d steam printing-press,” he wrote, “See, the electric telegraph, stretching across the Continent, from the Western Sea to Manhattan.” Still, as the budding poet learned, books neither sell themselves nor move themselves: without an efficient set of connections to get books to readers, the democratic media-saturated future Whitman imagined would have remained warehoused. Whitman’s works sometimes ran through the “many-cylinder’d steam printing press” and were carried in bulk on “the strong and quick locomotive.” Yet during his career, his publications did not follow a progressive path toward mass production and distribution. Even at the end of his life, in the 1890s as his fame was growing, the poet was selling copies of his latest works by hand to visitors at his small house in Camden, New Jersey. Mass media and centralization were only one part of the rich media world that Whitman embraced. Whitman’s Drift asks how the many options for distributing books and newspapers shaped the way writers wrote and readers read. Writers like Whitman spoke to the imagination inspired by media transformations by calling attention to connectedness, to how literature not only moves us emotionally, but moves around in the world among people and places. Studying that literature and how it circulated can help us understand not just how to read Whitman’s works and times, but how to understand what is happening to our imaginations now, in the midst of the twenty-first century media explosion.
