Book excerpt: 'Vivisection' is a collection of essays written by Albert Tracy Leffingwell. The topic discussed in this essay is one Leffingwell holds dear: vivisection form. Throughout his life, Leffingwell, who was a physician, authored many books bringing light to the cruel abuses of animal experimentation and calling for regulation. At the same time, he sought a middle ground between the anti-vivisection societies, which called for the abolition of all experimentation and those who rejected any restraints.

Book Synopsis The Vivisection Question (Classic Reprint) by : Albert Leffingwell
Download or read book The Vivisection Question (Classic Reprint) written by Albert Leffingwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vivisection Question I. By Vivisection is meant experimentation of any kind, painful or painless, made upon a living creature for an alleged scientific purpose. II. Within certain limitations and to a certain extent, the utility of animal experimentation makes it justifiable and right. III. The abuses to which the practice is liable are so great, that vivisection should be regulated by law, and placed under the control and supervision of the State. In order to prove need of the legal regulation here advocated, it has been necessary to refer to cruelties and abuses, incident to the practice as now carried on. The revelation of these has induced criticism; but I cannot see how otherwise, there could be adduced any proof of necessity for legal control. In one respect, the task made necessary by controversy on this subject has been exceedingly distasteful. It is by no means a pleasant literary employment to point out the inaccuracies or to demonstrate the blunders made bv men of national repute in their opposition to the regula tion of experimentation. But no fact is more clearly apparent than that too eager laudation of vivisection without control has evoked a carelessness of statement. The opinion of every reader regarding the justifiability, of experiments such as those here reported is especially desired. This is not a mere formal invitation, but an appeal made to each person to whom this pamphlet shall come. The facts art indisputable. But while the Association welcomes all suggestive and friendly criticism of its methods, - more than anything else it desires to evoke condemnation of the atrocities which have made such disclosures its duty. Download or read book A Book of Myths written by Jean Lang and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A Book of Myths" deals in a most entertaining manner with the mythology of Greece and Rome and many other noted lands. Added to the pleasure of the story there is the lure of the legend and the spell of old ways and customs. Not only many of the most celebrated are retold, but also many of the less well-known tales. The aim of the author, it is stated, has been to simplify for those who are not erudite scholars the stories of mythology, to which constant reference is made not only in classic, but in modern poetry, and to direct the attention of readers to poems which are not already known to them. Included are tales of Prometheus, Pygmalion, Orpheus, Perseus, King Midas, Pan, the Lorelei, Baldur and many more.
