Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book of the Year: A deliciously entertaining account of expatriate life in a small village just outside Verona, Italy. Tim Parks is anything but a gentleman in Verona. So after ten years of living with his Italian wife, Rita, in a typical provincial Italian neighborhood, the novelist found that he had inadvertently collected a gallery full of splendid characters. In this wittily observed account, Parks introduces readers to his home town, with a statue of the Virgin at one end of the street, a derelict bottle factory at the other, and a wealth of exotic flora and fauna in between. Via Colombare, the village’s main street, offers an exemplary hodgepodge of all that is new and old in the bel paese, a point of collision between invading suburbia and diehard peasant tradition. It is a world of creeping vines, stuccoed walls, shotguns, security cameras, hypochondria, and expensive sports cars. More than a mere travelogue, Italian Neighbors is a vivid portrait of the real Italy and a compelling story of how even the most foreign people and places gradually assume the familiarity of home. “One of the most delightful travelogues imaginable . . . so vivid, so packed with delectable details.” —Los Angeles Times Book Review

Few individuals have the affinity to make history without even trying. Some feel a sense of responsibility, some have a deep desire to make things better for the less fortunate, others have obscure motives. Leaders must study historical events, to make better decisions for the people they serve, and to avoid unwanted consequences; there's no reason to make the same mistakes twice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SYNOPSIS How do you become a man of love, beyond religion, beyond culture, beyond nation? A very short biography of Angelo Roncalli better known as the blessed Pope John XXIII who headed the Catholic Church from 1958 until his death in 1963. EXCERPT According to some well informed individuals, someone is seriously interested in brainwashing the masses and make them believe anything. A new world order. And more and more paranoid souls on the other front. It's quite sad, and as well intriguing that history gets rewritten over and over again; some documents disappear, while new ones come out of nowhere with fascinating revelations and of course interpretations. It's also interesting that history books of other countries differ substantially. Who's telling the truth, and, does it really matter? Was Galileo such a bad guy, the scientist who needed to know everything and create conflicts with our dogmas? Are these charlatans still meeting by the Bernini's masterpiece The Ecstasy of St. Theresa? What's the secret path, and what's the metaphor in it? As you're well aware, the Vatican is visited by over thirty million souls every year, and it's somehow challenging to keep track of everyone who mingles and concocts new historical drama around here. Once upon a time the Roman Church was the only government; it told kings what to do, it financed monarchies, it made laws, it was the only game in town. What's our game now? What's up with the embassy in Washington built in the late eighties? The last and most fascinating theory is that inside the catacombs underneath the Vatican, we're keeping the ashes of St. Peter, and of course Jesus Christ, perhaps even against his will, according to the Church of England. The reason they're both here is because St. Peter was the very first one to see Christ's resurrection, he wasn't, so he was instructed to build his own place, but apparently they didn't get along well after completion, and after my extensive walks at night I couldn't find neither. Money, yes you heard that right. We have plenty of money, we have plenty of gold, and, and... what are the consequences? Why so many popes ended up dead? Power. Secret societies again, or, God forgives me, some other conspiracy? We had an intruder not too long ago who made a humble attempt to take possession of important documents from the Vatican's archives, papers about the Church involvement in the holocaust and numerous writings by Galileo and Copernicus; he had a long walk inside, because our library is fifty miles long. Another Illuminati's special? As you can well imagine, being a pope is a tough job, Sunday messages, diplomatic ties, investments, keeping track of priests with hidden life instincts, gathering intelligence on secret societies, and staying alive.

Through their pages and their critical presentation, the reader is brought to discover the literary dignity of this production, clearly linked to the popular roots of nineteenth-century Italian culture, but at the same time confronted with the traumas and the different realities of a new society. The main themes are voiced - immigration, labor conditions, family ties, the lure and snares of the big city, its multiethnicity."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: This collection of essays examines the similarities and differences between medieval England and Germany at a period of great change in almost all areas of life. It asks a number of fundamental questions which highlight the foundations of a rich common European heritage. What was it that madelife in the twelfth century more varied, less peaceful, and less secure than before? How can the parellel developments, changes, and transformations that took place in Latin Europe in the High Middle Ages be related to each other? What answers were found to the challenges of the age in England andGermany? This volume gives the reader an opportunity to see how English-speaking and German scholars approach similar themes. Edited by two leading German medievalists, it includes 17 contributions by eminent scholrs from Britain, North America, and Germany. It is divided into 4 sections on modes ofcommunication, war and peace, Christians and non-Christians, and urban and rural developments, and is essential reading for students and scholars of English or German medieval history.

Book excerpt: The 1960s and 1970s were the heyday of spaghetti westerns--low-budget films about the early American West mostly filmed in Italy. Though sometimes derided as excessively violent imitations of American-made westerns, they attracted a substantial following that has endured. With its classic elements of gunfights, gambling, heroes, sidekicks, love, and death, the genre is now perceived by critics as an intriguing object of study. This book analyzes the construction of the stories presented in spaghetti westerns. It examines the content of the Italian western using concepts and constructs borrowed from scholars studying "pre-industrial" narratives. Plot, the constellation of characters, their relationship to each other, and their motives are studied. Films examined in detail include the seminal A Fistful of Dollars as well as Django, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. There is also a discussion of the early spaghetti westerns. The study then probes the elements of bounty hunters, the deprived hero, partnerships, betrayal, and comedy. An appendix details the top grossing Italian westerns between 1964 and 1975, including title, director, lead actor and intake. A second appendix provides a list of films quoted by Italian title and then by English title.

Book excerpt: International Discourses of Authoritarian Populism provides 15 cutting-edge chapters probing into the diversity of present-day populist discourse from across the world. Not adhering to any particular school, the volume explores populism from a variety of disciplines and perspectives, with contributions characterized by heuristic openness as called for by the manifold manifestations of populism. The chapters balance theoretical and empirical studies, as well as quantitative and qualitative surveys and case studies, to offer readings on historical and new types of populism, and the politicians associated with these variates. Authors draw on a variety of print, digital, textual, and visual source materials to provide a close examination of the phenomena interconnected with populism including separatism (Catalexit), human rights and legal issues, debate rhetoric, and journalism, with many authors writing as insiders about the situation within their own country. Through its multi-disciplinarity, International Discourses of Authoritarian Populism provides fresh insights into the existing and potential dangers of populism, and a basis for further critical assessment and discussion. It will be a key resource for scholars and students across a range of disciplines, including sociology, political science, linguistics, media and communication studies, literary studies, and history. Moreover, it will be of special interest to professionals who deal with both national and international issues of populism.
