Book excerpt: Back in the late 90¿s I was singing in the church choirs giving God all my talents and gifts. I would see people visiting the church who had Vitiligo, I would go up to them introduce myself and give them a hug. Because I know what they¿ve been going through. People always approach me, asking me how was I able to walk around without the makeup on. I let them know that It¿s God working in me, He¿s the one whose keeping me, Protecting us. We can¿t do anything without him. Once when I was at the YMCA and a lady run from behind her counter telling me about her Vitiligo and how she can¿t deal with it. One day a total stranger approached me telling me about his problem with dating and Vitiligo. I have a friend who has a neighbor who both her and her husband have Vitiligo. I¿m always encouraging people, letting them know they can make it. Once I was at the gas station, getting my inspection ticker and an older man was just setting there. I never saw him even look up at me, he just started talking to me, saying, my daughter in law has what you have, I said what¿s that. He said that, I said oh Vitiligo? He said, my son wants to take his wife out to dinner and to a movie, but she won¿t go out of the house. There are people all over the world who are struggling, refusing to remove their makeup, hiding in their closets, behind closed doors because they¿re so afraid of what people will say about them. It wasn¿t until I started to sell my book when all the pieces started to come together. It was all the feed back that I was getting back from the people who had read my book that made me realize that all the pain that I went through was not for me, but it was for your pain. The Lord had told me to write this book two years ago. The Lord was preparing me some forty-two years ago. This book was wrote for you, and your pain not mine. The Lord has brought me through all of this to help somebody else. It never was about me, it¿s always been about you and your pain. God Bless you. Norene L. Willis

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Book excerpt: A compellingly candid memoir that details Jackson's life in seclusion, by the bodyguards who were with him in his final days - with a new introduction to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Michael Jackson's death . Hounded by the tabloid media, driven from his self-made sanctuary, Neverland, Michael Jackson spent his final years moving from city to city, living with his three children in virtual seclusion -- a futile attempt to escape a world that wouldn't leave him alone. During that time, two men served as the singer's personal security team: Bill Whitfield, a former cop and veteran of the security profession, and Javon Beard, a brash, untested rookie, both single fathers themselves. Stationed at his side nearly 24/7, their job was to see and hear everything that transpired, and to keep everyone else out, making them the only two men who know what 60 million fans around the world still want to know: What really happened to the King of Pop? Driven by a desire to show the world who Michael Jackson truly was, Whitfield and Beard have produced the only definitive, first-person account of Michael Jackson's last years: the extreme measures necessary to protect Jackson and his family, the financial struggles that led their pay to be suspended for weeks at a time, the simple moments of happiness they managed to share in a time of great stress, the special relationship Jackson shared with his fans, and the tragic events that culminated in the singer's ill-fated comeback, This Is It. The truth is far more captivating than anything you've yet heard. An indispensable piece of pop-culture history, Remember the Time is the story of a man struggling to live a normal life under extraordinary circumstances, of a father fighting to protect and provide for his children. Remember the Time is the book that dismantles the tabloid myths once and for all to give Michael Jackson back his humanity.

Book excerpt: In 2015, the photographer Brock Elbank embarked on a series of portraits to celebrate the beauty of freckles. The result is an intimate series of freckled faces, each with a story to tell. Freckled skin or, to give it its proper name, ephelides, runs in families and is most common in white people with fair skin and red hair, but it occurs in people of all ethnicities. Although freckles intensify with exposure to the sun, they are now generally thought not to be a sign of sun damage. They generally appear when a child is about seven, and from then on will fade and intensify according to the time of year. There are many who appreciate the beauty of freckled skin, but it may at last be having a more mainstream 'fashion moment' as red-haired models become more common in the media and those with more unusual appearances gain currency. Elbank has always been drawn to unique characters, and for him beauty is 'finding something so incredible that it's unique'. 'I've always loved freckles, ' he says. He was inspired to start the series after photographing his son's freckly friend in 2012. 'What I find interesting about the individual characters that I have been fortunate enough to photograph is that many have struggled with their freckles since their infancy and either hated them, or grown to live with them or even like them in adulthood.' He says that many of his subjects come to the studio feeling awkward or vulnerable, but leave feeling liberated after seeing their portraits. This beautiful book, impeccably produced and lovingly photographed, will appeal to lovers of portraiture and of the human body, as well as--of course--to those with freckles themselves.
