Book excerpt: This pilot cross-sectional study was conducted to assess vitamin D status and body composition of collegiate indoor female volleyball players at Rice University in Houston, TX. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations and body composition was determined using air displacement plethysmography. Participants completed a 24-hour food record, vitamin D food frequency questionnaire, and sunlight habit questionnaire to assess dietary vitamin D intake and sunlight exposure habits. This study also piloted the use of La-Roche-Posay MyUV Patch to estimate ultraviolet light A (UVA) and ultraviolet light B (UVB) exposure. No significant relationship was found between vitamin D status, percent body fat, dietary vitamin D intake, or UVA and UVB exposure. However, the study did find that the majority of participants (64%) were vitamin D deficient or insufficient based on serum 25(OH)D. This study contributes to the knowledge of vitamin D status of indoor college athletes and can serve as a template for future studies.

Book excerpt: Intercollegiate volleyball is a powerful sport that consists of two to three hour matches; therefore, optimal physical condition is critical for top performance. This study assessed nutrition and anthropometric parameters at the start and conclusion of both the spring 2009 (no intervention) and spring 2010 (intervention) off-seasons as well as additional measurements four months after the intervention. The subject' body composition, total energy, carbohydrate and protein needs were calculated and intakes were assessed. The intervention consisted of monthly individual nutrition counseling sessions based on analysis of intake from three-day food records. Food records were analyzed using Nutrient Data System for Research software verified by interview. Dependent T-tests were conducted on anthropometric and dietary measurements. The results revealed that during the 2009 off-season, there were no significant changes in any parameters and 89% of subjects were not within recommended anthropometric and dietary guidelines. During 2010, body composition significantly decreased to optimal levels for the sport. In addition, energy and macronutrient intake significantly improved toward recommended guidelines. Four months later, the subjects' intakes and body composition were assessed again and results were compared to the spring 2010 results with no significant changes. These results indicate that providing nutrition assessment and intervention plays a critical role in physical conditioning of athletes.

Book excerpt: Poor iron status is frequently observed in young teenage women due to the combinations of growth, menstruation, and strenuous training. Iron deficiency anemia is clinically significant because iron stores (serum ferritin) are reduced which compromises the delivery of oxygen to working tissue and is important in the health and performance of competitive runners. The primary aims of this study are to assess the incidence of anemia in female high school; assess the risk factors for anemia; the relationship between anemia and vitamin D levels; and possible associations between race performances, anemia and vitamin D levels across a single season. Sixteen current female high school cross country runners were recruited as participants for this study through blind copy e-mail through their coach. The final participation count was 8 athletes. Both pre- and post-season, the following tests will be performed in the laboratory: 1) Height and weight to calculate BMI; 2) VO2 peak treadmill test (measures aerobic fitness); 3) Body composition analysis (via BOD POD); 4) Nutrition intake analysis (via 3-day dietary recall; 5) A complete blood count test (testing for hemoglobin); 6) vitamin D blood test (25-hydroxy vitamin D test). 7) Survey on menstrual cycle and medication; 8) A dipstick urine analysis was performed to rule out blood loss in the urine. There were no statistically significant findings, however there were overall trends. There was a slight increase in body weight and decrease in overall body composition. Using the BOD POD there was an overall increase in lean mass and decrease in fat mass comparing pre to post season. In measuring athletic performance via VO2 Max all athletes had an increase in athletic performance in post-season measurements. The blood analysis looking at complete blood count (CBC), ferritin and Vitamin D levels showed that 62.5% of our athletes were already anemic in pre-season as well as having low red blood cell count, hemoglobin and hematocrit levels and therefore had to be supplemented causing the decrease in anemia in post season. Vitamin D levels were normal. No significant findings were present in the urine analysis looking for breakdown of blood cells. Menstrual status was all found to be normal in pre and post searson. The three-day food diary recall found overall trends of the athlete's nutrition to be below the recommended daily amount for their age, gender, and activity levels in pre and post season.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of training on body composition, dietary intake, and iron status of female collegiate swimmers and whether nutrition attitudes are correlated to dietary choices. Measurements were obtained on 24 eumenorrheic Iowa State University female collegiate swimmers (swimmers, n=18; divers, n=6) at preseason, before competition, and after 16-weeks of training. Training consisted of 3 days/week on dry land (resistance, strength, flexibility; 1.5 hours/day) and 6 days/week in-water (7,000-11,000 yards/day; nine, 2 hour sessions/week). Body composition was assessed using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Changes were documented in body composition, regional fat and lean tissue distribution, dietary intake, and iron status using paired t-tests. We also examined the relationship between dietary changes and nutrition attitudes using correlation analyses. There were decreases in BMI (P=0.05), waist circumference (P[Less than or equal to symbol]0.0001), hip circumference (P[Less than or equal to symbol]0.0001), whole body fat weight (P=0.0002), and percentage body fat (P[Less than or equal to symbol]0.0001); lean weight (P=0.028) increased. We found no significant change in regional lean distribution, but documented a decrease in fat at the waist (P=0.0002), hip (P=0.0002), and thigh (P=0.002). Energy intake at preseason averaged 2403±864 kcal-day−1 with macronutrient composition of 62% carbohydrate, 13% protein, and 24% fat; no changes were noted from preseason to late season. Dietary fiber (P=0.036), iron (P=0.015), vitamin C (P=0.029), vitamin B6 (P=0.032), and fruit exchanges (P=0.003) increased. A higher nutrition attitude score was correlated with a higher intake of calcium (P=0.02), milk exchanges (P=0.04), and fruit exchanges (P=0.019). We documented an increase in hemoglobin (Hb) (P=0.046) and hematocrit (Hct) (P=0.014) and a decrease in serum transferrin receptor (P[Less than or equal to symbol]0.0001). In summary, after 16-weeks of training, female collegiate swimmers decreased overall body fat and increased lean weight. Dietary quality improved with an increase in dietary fiber, iron, vitamin C, vitamin B6, and fruit exchanges, as well as a decrease in fat exchanges. A more positive nutrition attitude score was correlated with higher intakes of calcium, milk, and fruit. Iron status improved with an increase in Hb, Hct, and a decrease in serum TfR. Additional studies to evaluate body composition and iron status in relation to dietary intake in female collegiate swimmers are warranted.

Book excerpt: In addition to the well-established role of vitamin D in bone health, there is evidence to suggest that vitamin D may also be associated with the prevention of a wide array of non-skeletal, autoimmune, and chronic diseases. In addition, correlational studies suggest that maintaining a sufficient vitamin D status may positively influence athletic performance indicators, namely strength, power, speed, cardiorespiratory fitness, reaction time, coordination, and body composition. However, there is a lack of consensus among the Institute of Medicine and various vitamin D researchers in defining ideal vitamin D concentrations for both health and performance related benefits. Although this controversy has led to conflicting evidence regarding the extent of vitamin D deficiency among the general population, the few studies examining the vitamin D status of athletes exclusively suggest that a large percentage of athletes may be insufficient or deficient in vitamin D. These deficiencies seem to be most common in the winter and spring regardless of geographic location or whether the athlete competes indoors or outdoors. Although direct interventional studies measuring vitamin D concentrations and athletic performance indicators are needed to confirm the association between vitamin D and athletic performance, this paper will demonstrate the potential mechanisms underlying the potential association as well as summarize the current vitamin D recommendations that may enhance health and performance in athletes.
