Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vital Forces of the Early Church It was inevitable that in the late traditions embodied in Acts the power should be associated with miracles and marvels. But any penetrating reader can discern that what really counted in the primitive community was the abnormal endowment for Spiritual situations. So that it is not going beyond the evidence to say that the early Christians soon began to feel their call to victory. From their intimate knowledge of Jesus they believed that this was the Divine purpose. Hence they never hesitated to become fellow-workers with God. The outcome of this equipment in their daily thought and feeling was enthusiasm. So much is plain from the opening chapters of Acts, corroborated by many passages in the Epistles. It is unfortunate that attention has been turned aside from the more general features of the community to such more or less accidental details as the sale of their goods by individuals and the contribution of the proceeds to a common fund. The important feature in the famous story of Ananias and Sapphira is not the terrible penalty represented as falling upon them suddenly, but the high standard of Christian morality which the story presupposes. Book excerpt: "No more fitting summary of the account given in Acts of the Early Christian movement could be found than the words of chap. xix. 20: 'So mightily did the message of the Lord grow and prevail.' The book intends to be a narrative of the victorious progress of the good news of Christ. Even those elements in it which fail to appeal to us were influential at the close of the first century A.D. This was what Christianity had achieved. It had come to occupy successfully the chief centers of the ancient world. It had spread from Jerusalem to Rome." -- From Chapter 1

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of the Early Church These graphic sketches of the "Heroes of the Early Church" are the latest series penned by the distinguished author, whom Spurgeon fittingly called "The Prince of Children's Preachers." The sketches are in many respects the best work of the gifted man. As he ripened in saintship for heaven, his literary style became even more rich with the aroma of the gospel, and so more forcible, simple and crisp than in his earlier writings. The articles were originally prepared for The Youth's World, and were issued in that periodical. The revision and preparation of them for publication in this form has been an easy and delightful task. Indeed, so carefully did Dr. Newton prepare his copy for the press that little was required to be done beyond the omission of some repetitions of statement, necessarily incident to serial articles in a periodical. Dr. Newton had planned another series on the "Heroes of the Modern Church," to follow these, but was compelled by ill health to give up writing them. Yet he continued to work so diligently that the last article from his pen was written for the number of The Youth's World which appeared the month after his death. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Church and the Roman Claim Lectures In these Lectures our conflict is not with men, but with opinions. Frankness of speech in vindication of historic facts does not in any way alter the kindly personal feeling I entertain for those from whom I differ. The Roman Claim would ban out of God's fold, and exclude from the brotherhood of the hope in Christ, myself, and half of Christendom. It becomes a Duty not to be shirked, in loyalty to Truth, and to the Common Faith, to test the basis on which such a claim affects to rest. This duty I trust I have performed with candour. The following pages are intended at once for the ordinary reader, and also (by Notes and Appendix) to aid those who wish to make a further study of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies of the Heroes of the Early Church If the heroic element lent a charm to the study of Old Testament characters, it must give an added interest to the study of these makers of the early Church, whose every-day life was so full of heroism for the cross of Christ, and who, with one exception, gave his life for the Master. It would have been interesting to carry out the plan of the Character Studies, as in the first book of the series; but, in order to make the setting clear, it has been necessary to con fine this book to sketches. Rather than stories, that in these studies of the heroes we might also give the history of the Apostolic Church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Acts of the Apostles: A Narrative of the Development of the Early Church It is but a hopeless kind of so-called criticism that would admit the authenticity of the Acts, as even conservative rationalists now do, and deny or attempt to explain away what the Acts chiefly insist upon the fulfilment of the pr0ph ceies and promises of Christ, the descent of the Holy Ghost, and the miraculous and supernatural character of the Christian propaganda. At tempt to rationalize Christianity, and you evis cerate or annihilate it. It did what human rea son and human nature never did or could do; ad mit, then, that it was what it proclaims itself to be the work of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Church Classics: The Apostolical Constitutions The Greek text is known to us to-day in four MSS. The earliest of these, dated A.D. IIII, is preserved at S. Petersburg. (S. Pet. Greek MSS. 254.) The next in age is a Vienna MS. of the fourteenth century. (Vienna, Gk. Hist. MSS. 56.) The two remaining MSS. are both of the sixteenth century, and are preserved at Vienna and Paris. (Vienna, Gk. Hist. MSS. 57, and Paris, fonds Grec. 961. - Reg. 2874, e Colb. 4491.) From the date of its rediscovery the work has been the subject of considerable controversy. It bears the name of Clement of Rome, and was regarded by Turrianus and Bovius as being his genuine work. This high esteem was surpassed by Whiston (Primitive Christianity. London, 1711), who expressed the opinion that it contained the substance of Our Lords revelation during the forty days which intervened between His resurrection and ascension, and, consequently, was rather more important than the New Testament itself. These views, however, did not meet with universal approval. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Ministry in the Early Centuries: The Eighteenth Series of the Cunningham Lectures Dr. Moberly, in his eminently suggestive book, Ministerial Priesthood, has warned all students of early Church History to beware of mental presuppositions, unchallenged assumptions, hypotheses or postulates. The warning has been taken with all seriousness, even when the perusal of his book has suggested the thought that mental presuppositions, like sins, are more readily recognized in our neighbours than in ourselves. I feel bound to admit that three assumptions or postulates may be found underlying these lectures. Whether they are right or wrong the reader must judge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Text Worthy of Plotinus makes available for the first time information on the collaborative work that went into the completion of the first reliable edition of Plotinus’ Enneads: Plotini Opera, editio maior, three volumes (Brussels, Paris, and Leiden, 1951-1973), followed by the editio minor, three volumes (Oxford, 1964-1983). Pride of place is given to the correspondence of the editors, Paul Henry S.J. and Hans-Rudolf Schwyzer, with other prominent scholars of late antiquity, amongst whom are E.R. Dodds, B.S. Page, A.H. Armstrong, and J. Igal S.J. Also included in the volume are related documents consisting in personal memoirs, course handouts and extensive biographical notices of the two editors as well as of those other scholars who contributed to fostering the revival of Plotinus in the latter half of the 20th century. Taken together, letters and documents let the reader into the problems – codicological, exegetical, and philosophical – that are involved in the interpretation of medieval manuscripts and their transcription for modern readers. Additional insights are provided into the nature of collaborative work involving scholars from different countries and traditions. A Text Worthy of Plotinus will prove a crucial archive for generations of scholars. Those interested in the philosophy of Plotinus will find it a fount of information on his style, manner of exposition, and handling of sources. The volume will also appeal to readers interested in broader trends in 20th century scholarship in the fields of Classics, History of Ideas, Theology, and Religion.
