Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This math workbook from the Dr. Pi Squared Math Workbooks series aims to teach what a fraction is and help kids visualize fractions. It is designed for kids who are just learning about fractions. The problems consist of colorful pictures from which kids are to determine fractions. The book begins with circles cut into pie slices, from halves to twelfths. The students need to determine what fraction of each pie is blue, yellow, and red. For example, if a pie is divided into fourths, two of which are blue, one yellow, and the other red, the student would answer one-half, one-fourth, and one-fourth. After ample practice with pie slices, the workbook moves onto triangles, squares, and hexagons. A couple of pages include groups of circles where kids need to determine fractions greater than one - for example, two and a half circles might be colored green. Other visual fraction problems include rectangles, smiley faces, arrows, letters, and numbers. Toward the end of the workbook, some questions ask about more than just colors - like what fraction of the arrows point up, or what fraction of the letters are vowels. Answers are nicely organized by page number in the back of the book to allow students, parents, or teachers to quickly check the answers. There is ample workspace for students to write large answers and still fit their solutions comfortably into the space provided. The problems appear in a large font size, since students usually write larger than standard textbook fonts. High-quality, durable, bright paper is used (instead of standard workbook paper, which often tears easily and appears dull in color).

Book excerpt: The third edition of this book offers a unique approach to making mathematics education research on the teaching and learning of fraction concepts readily accessible and understandable to pre-service and in-service K-8 mathematics teachers. Revealing students’ thought processes with extensive annotated samples of student work and vignettes characteristic of classroom teachers’ experience, this book provides teachers a research-based lens to interpret evidence of student thinking, inform instruction and ultimately improve student learning. Based on research gathered in the Ongoing Assessment Project (OGAP), and updated throughout, this engaging and easy-to-use resource also features: Two new chapters dedicated to understanding the OGAP Fraction Framework and Progression—based on research conducted with hundreds of teachers—to gather and interpret evidence of student learning along a learning progression, referenced throughout the book so readers can apply the concepts to their instruction; A close focus on student work, including 180+ annotated pieces of student work, to help teachers improve their ability to recognize, assess, and monitor their students’ errors and misconceptions, as well as their developing conceptual understanding; A discussion of decimal fractions, also new to the third edition; In-chapter sections on how Common Core State Standards for Math (CCSSM) are supported by math education research; End-of-chapter Looking Back questions to allow teachers to analyze student thinking and consider instructional strategies for their own students; Instructional links to help teachers relate concepts from each chapter to their own instructional materials and programs; Accompanying online Support Material includes an answer key to Looking Back questions, as well as a copy of the OGAP Fraction Framework and Progression. A Focus on Fractions is part of the popular A Focus on . . . collection, designed to aid the professional development of pre-service and in-service mathematics teachers. As with the other volumes on addition and subtraction, ratios and proportions, and multiplication and division, this updated new edition bridges the gap between what math education researchers know and what teachers need to know in order to better understand evidence in student work and make effective instructional decisions.

Book excerpt: "Seeing Fractions" is an instructional unit for teachers in California that was trial tested in about 30 classrooms, grades 4 through 6 with diverse student populations, and designed to help students become aware of the variety of ways in which fractions are commonly used. The Introduction includes an overview of fractions and what students will be expected to learn, a discussion of the teaching and learning theory of constructing mathematical models that is advocated in this unit, and a discussion of teaching techniques that indicate the use of manipulatives, small-group work, homework, parent communication, and the teacher's role in the classroom. The remainder of the unit is organized into five modules, each of which focuses on a different context for exploring fractions. Each module requires between five and seven class sessions, and includes the following components: an overview of the module; plans for each class session that break up each module into manageable segments with accompanying activities; teacher notes that draw on observations of students' strategies, approaches, difficulties, and confusions; and dialogue boxes that give examples of conversations in which students attempt to express their understanding of key mathematical ideas. The modules are: (1) Geometry with Fractions; (2) Rates--A Different Model; (3) Sharing Cookies; (4) Making and Using Fraction Strips; and (5) Using Fractions to Compare Data. The final section discusses assessment alternatives for the unit. Student worksheets in English and in Spanish are interpersed in the text. (MDH)

Book excerpt: "With the collaboration of a number of dedicated teachers and their students, Susan Empson and Linda Levi have produced a volume that is faithful to the basic principles of CGI while at the same time covering new ground with insight and innovation." -Thomas P. Carpenter This highly anticipated follow-up volume to the landmark Children's Mathematics: Cognitively Guided Instruction addresses the urgent need to help teachers understand and teach fraction concepts. Fractions remain one of the key stumbling blocks in math education, and here Empson and Levi lay a foundation for understanding fractions and decimals in ways that build conceptual learning. They show how the same kinds of intuitive knowledge and sense making that provides the basis for children's learning of whole number arithmetic can be extended to fractions and decimals. Just as they did in Children's Mathematics and Thinking Mathematically, Empson and Levi provide important insights into children's thinking and alternative approaches to solving problems. Three themes appear throughout the book: building meaning for fractions and decimals through discussing and solving word problems the progression of children's strategies for solving fraction word problems and equations from direct modeling through relational thinking designing instruction that capitalizes on students' relational thinking strategies to integrate algebra into teaching and learning fractions. With illuminating examples of student work, classroom vignettes, "Teacher Commentaries" from the field, sample problems and instructional guides provided in each chapter, you'll have all the tools you need to teach fractions and decimals with understanding and confidence.

Book excerpt: Learning about fractions isn't always easy, but who says it can't be fun? Using one very entertaining cow, math teacher Taryn Souders has devised a very clever (and fun) way of explaining fractions to beginning learners. One whole cow, calmly eating hay, decided to act differently on this particular day. One whole cow - what should we do? I know! Let's paint one half blue! Prompted by a poem and a visual clue, students are asked to answer what fraction is illustrated in the cow's antics, starting with halves and progressing into thirds, fourths, eighths, and tenths. What fraction of the cow is blue? Answer: ½ What fraction of the cow is white? Answer: ½ With the math problem featured as part of the artwork, students get an immediate sense of how to apply and understand the concept of fractions. How moo-velous! Taryn J. Souders lives in Winter Park, Florida. With a background in math education, she is passionate about keeping math fun for young students. This is her first children's book. Tatjana Mai-Wyss was born in Switzerland. She remembers learning about fractions with the help of a typical Swiss cake. Tatjana has illustrated several children's books and her work has been published in books and magazines in the United States and abroad. She lives in South Carolina.
