Book excerpt: Psychological and educational researchers in the Scandinavian countries have cooperated in a research effort relating to children's learning disabilities for more than a decade. Support has come from the federal governments and other funding agencies in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark through the Secretariat for Scan dinavian Cultural Cooperation. A number of independent studies have already been published, dealing with various aspects oflearning disabilities in the literacy skills of reading and writing. The largest and most comprehensive study was the Bergen Project, a longitudi nal study of an entire cohort of children, with special emphasis on those who developed specific learning disabilities in reading and writing (dyslexia). These dyslexic children were studied, diagnosed, and treated over a period of nine years, along with various control and comparison groups, which included a large subgroup with general learning disabilities (retarded). The Bergen Project involved the collection of voluminous data. The children were identified by means of special diagnostic tests and treated using remedial materials and techniques that had been developed to deal with various types of dyslexia. The ophthalmology team not only tested the children, but they also prescribed and provided glasses, and even performed surgery when necessary. The pediatric neurologists did general pediatric and neurological examinations, following up many of the cases with EEGs and CT (computerized tomography, brain x-rays).

They discuss a wide range of disorders, including areas of recent research - such as frontal lobe dementias and the neuropsychological aspects of late life depression - and clinical problems typically given insufficient consideration in other works, such as seizure disorder, head injury, and mental retardation. Normal aging is also covered in detail, and assessment procedures and clinical interventions are given thorough treatment. Other highlights include discussions of guardianship and caregiving personality and behavior, psychotic disorders, Alzheimer's, and head trauma.

Book excerpt: This book is the only text of its kind to cover the area of neuropsychological testing of persons without vision or with limited vision. A thorough survey of the existing instruments for assessment of the blind is provided, with reviews of those assessments to help clinicians identify effective tools for assessment work with this population. In addition, new assessment instruments are presented, with instructions for how to administer these assessments and reproducible materials for clinician use. These instruments have been found to be psychometrically sound, with reliability and validity data, collected from over 500 adults, described. Specific case examples in chapters make the process of assessment come alive and allow procedures to be easily understandable. After reading this book, clinicians will be prepared to provide assessments for the visually impaired in the areas of:*Vocation*Academics*Personality*Intelligence, both Verbal and Non-Verbal*Neuropsychology*Executive Functioning*Spatial Ability*Memory, both Verbal and Non-Verbal*Special clinical populations, including those with low birthweight, with a new pervasive developmental disorder definedClassic tests are updated and new tests introduced to represent the cutting edge of assessment of individuals with vision issues. Readers will be equipped to administer a variety of assessments, including:*Tactual Formboard Test (Stoelting Catalog #)*Pattern of Search Test (Stoelting Catalog #)*Adapted Token Test*Auditory Cancellation Test*Michigan Mathematics Test for the Blind*Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test*Haptic Intelligence Scale Subtests, adapting popular cognitive subtests for use as tactile-based assessmentsThis book is the comprehensive guide for neuropsychological assessment of those without vision or limited vision!

Book excerpt: More Trouble with Maths acknowledges that there are many reasons why children and adults are unable to function mathematically. Difficulties include problems with rote learning basic facts and procedures, debilitating anxiety, poor working and short-term memories and mathematics vocabulary. Central to this new edition is a range of standardised tests and diagnostic activities, including a 15 minute test of basic mathematics, a thinking style test, tests of basic fact retrieval and maths anxiety. Guiding the reader in the interpretation of tests, this new edition shows how identifying the barriers to learning is the first step in a programme of intervention. Written in an engaging and user-friendly style, Steve Chinn draws on his extensive experience and expertise to: show how to consider and appraise the many factors relating to mathematical learning difficulties explain how these factors can be investigated explore their impact on learning mathematics. Emphasising the need for a clinical approach when assessing individuals, this book shows how diagnosis and assessment can become integrated into everyday teaching. This highly practical and relevant resource is a crucial resource for anyone who wants to accurately and effectively identify the depth and nature of mathematical learning difficulties and dyscalculia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, interest in mathematical cognition was not new in psychology. However, it was rediscovered in the 1970s under the influential work of the Genevan School. In particular, Piaget’s work on conservation, including conservation of number, profoundly influenced developmental psychologists who, working first in the Piagetian theoretical framework, began to discover a broader set of topics in mathematical cognition. In developmental psychology, the field continued to expand and covered a wide range of topics. During the same period, however, no such evolution occurred in neuropsychology, and except for some studies around the time of publication, very little had been published on acalculia and number processing disorders. However, a more general theoretical evolution occurred in neuropsychology, mainly due to increasing collaboration between clinical and experimental neuropsychologists, on the one hand and cognitive psychologists on the other. The objective of this book was to promote an evolution in the neuropsychology of calculation and number processing deficits and thus to introduce clinical and experimental neuropsychologists, as well as developmental and cognitive psychologists, to recent research and theoretical approaches that are of particular interest for the neuropsychological approach to mathematical cognition.
