Book excerpt: Through a richly detailed account of the genesis, flowering, and decline of the Puritan ideal of a church of the elect in England and America, Professor Morgan offers an important reinterpretation of a pivotal era in New England history. Historians have generally supposed that the main outlines of the Puritan church were determined in England and Holland and transplanted to the new world. The author convincingly suggests, instead, that the distinguishing characteristic of the New England churches--the ideal of a church composed exclusively of true and tested saints--developed fully only in the 1630's and 1640's, some time after the first settlers arrived in New England. He also examines the influence of the Separatist colony at Plymouth on the later settlers of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and follows the difficulties created by a definition of the religious community so selective that the New England churches nearly expired for lack of saints to fill them.

Book excerpt: While Morgan’s literary portfolio shows remarkable diversity, it is studded with works on Puritanism. “Visible Saints” further solidifies his reputation as a leading authority on this subject. An expanded version of his Anson G. Phelps Lectures of 1962 (presented at New York University), this slender volume, first published in 1963, focuses on the central issue of church membership. Morgan posits and develops a revisionary main thesis: the practice of basing membership upon a declaration of experiencing saving grace, or “conversion,” was first put into effect not in England, Holland, or Plymouth, as is commonly related, but in Massachusetts Bay Colony by non-separating Puritans. Characterized by stylistic grace and exegetic finesse, “Visible Saints” is another scholarly milestone in the “Millerian Age” of Puritan historiography. “Although he does not pretend to deal ‘exhaustively’ with the subject, Professor Morgan leaves few aspects untouched. Throughout, we are presented with thoughtful, original scholarship and with a skillful reinterpretation of a Puritan idea.”―New England Quarterly

This Teachers' Guide now offers teachers and parents a practical means to stimulate both the spiritual growth and intellectual development of students through an organized, systematic study of seventeen biographies of holy men and women in the Vision Books series. This guide facilitates student interaction with the spiritual insights, moral lessons, and sound academic content found in each book. It is divided into sections, each of which contains an overview of the saint's life and activities that illustrate the person's impact on the Church and his time. These activities are destined to challenge student thinking, to promote the application of spiritual insights to the reader's personal life, and to expand the reader's understanding and appreciation of the holiness of the saints. Teachers can select any combination of activities for individual students, for small groups, or for class-wide discussion. The activities include chapter vocabulary, language in context, time line, outline maps, topics for written reports, biographical sketches, using Scripture and the Catechism, and discussion questions.

Dear St. Padre Pio, Pray for me, please, that I may receive the graces I need to deeply participate in the holy sacrifice of the Mass. Please help me to desire humility, simplicity, and the spirit of obedience in my walk of life. Help me to realize the power in suffering united to the will of God. St. Padre Pio, pray for us and all who invoke your aid. If it is in God's holy will, please grant me (here mention your request). Amen.

Sam has a secret he's finding harder and harder to hide, and Charlie is dealing with an increasingly absent dad and a dealer whose threats are anything but empty. Now, during the sticky Florida summer before their senior year, the ex-best friends are thrown together once again when they have no one else to turn to. A year had passed like smoke in a breeze. Suddenly, later was now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a picture of an important religious reform group in action during the period of the French Revolution, Napoleon, and the Industrial Revolution. In this period of injustice and misery the British ruling classes, frightened by the excesses of the French Revolution, determined, at a time when economic life was changing at a rate unequalled for centuries, that existing laws and institutions should not change. And yet from this time came the moral, philanthropic, and religious ideas which transformed later England and resulted in the abolition of the slave trade, educational reforms in India, emancipation of Negroes in the British possessions, popular education and the growth of Sunday schools in England, reform of the whole penal and judicial system, industrial and parliamentary reform, and a new spirit of religious tolerance and philanthropy. The moving force in human progress at this epoch was a "brotherhood of Christian politicians" lampooned in Parliament, during their lifetime, as "the Saints" and remembered in history as "The Clapham Sect," led by Wilberforce. Dr. Howse brings together for the first time in this book material on all the activities of the Sect. He gives us sketches of members of the Set, their life as a group at home, and in the midst of their campaigns, where novel methods and ceaseless labour brought results out of all proportion to the size of the group.
