Book excerpt: Anand has been one of the world's top players for more than two decades, and cemented his place in the all-time hall of fame by winning the unified World Championship in 2007, and successfully defending his title against Kramnik and Topalov. But it's not just his results that make Anand special. His style of play leads to highly spectacular games, and his speed of thought is the stuff of legends. He is also a great explainer of ideas, as his annotations for this book demonstrate. Anand is renowned as 'Mr Nice Guy', popular with both the public and his fellow supergrandmasters. John Nunn, who collaborated with Anand on the original book, has annotated 30 games selected by Anand himself from the period 2001-2011. This new edition also features biographical information and a career record.

Book excerpt: 'Doing everything admirably well matters very little if you can't finish the job.' Few people know better than Viswanathan Anand how to think strategically at lightning speed and work under immense pressure to overcome the toughest odds. From the time he learnt to move pieces on a chessboard as a six-year-old, Vishy - as Anand is fondly called - has racked up innumerable accolades. With five World Championship titles, he is a peerless ambassador of chess, and his is one of the most revered names in the sport. In Mind Master, Vishy looks back on a lifetime of games played, opponents tackled and circumstances overcome, and draws from its depths significant tools that will help every reader navigate life's challenges: What role do tactics and strategy play in the preparation for achieving a goal? How can emotions be harnessed to your advantage in tricky situations? What do you need to do to stay relevant in the face of rapidly changing realities? Is unlearning really the only way to learn? These are just some of the nuggets Vishy touches upon with characteristic wit, easy wisdom and disarming candour in this expanded edition of his critically acclaimed memoir, a delightful and invaluable exploration into the self that will thrill, inspire and motivate readers as few books have done before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viswanathan Anand Viswanathan Anand (1969) was the undisputed World Chess Champion from 2007-2013. In 2007 Anand won a strong eight-player, double round robin tournament in Mexico City. It is highly unusual to become World Champion by winning a tournament instead of a match, but this had to do with the fact that FIDE was looking for a way to reunify the World Chess Championship. Since 1993, there were two World Chess Champions: a Classical World Champion and a FIDE World Champion. At that time the reigning FIDE World Chess Champion, Garry Kasparov, and his Challenger, Nigel Short, decided to abandon FIDE and set up the Professional Chess Association (PCA). They held their own World Championship match. After the World Championship Tournament in Mexico, future World Championships returned to the match format, and there was one single World Champion again. Anand defended his title against Kramnik (2008), Topalov (2010) and Gelfand (2012). In 2013 he lost his title to Magnus Carlsen. Anand once said: "When I started out playing chess as a kid I thought I should be world champion. As a kid you have no idea what that means and you only sort of picture it. It is hard to imagine that I waited all those years and it happened in a late stage of my career." At the age of 18, Anand became India's first grandmaster. He won his first World Championship (FIDE) in 2000. In India, Anand is a national hero, and he received several prestigious awards. To name a few: in 1991 and 1992 the 'Tiger of Madras' won the first ever Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, which is put up for the spectacular and most outstanding performance in the field of sports over a period of four years. In 1998 Anand received the Sportstar Millennium Award for best sportsperson of the millennium. In 2007 he was presented with the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian award, for his achievements in chess. He was the first ever sportsperson in India to receive this award. Anand: "In a way players at the top should try to promote the game in their own countries as that is the legacy that makes you feel proud. If you have not done that you have failed as a sportsperson." Anand is known for his deep opening preparation, but also for his playing speed and his ability to calculate complicated variations very quickly. It is not a coincidence that tactics play a big role in his games. Try this training book and check out if you can compete with Anand's tactical ingenuity. This book offers you one hundred training exercises, in which the former World Champion turned the game in his favour. The puzzles start at a moderate level and gradually get more difficult. Good luck!

Book excerpt: Jan Timman is one of the greatest chess players never to win the world title. For many years ‘the Best of the West’ belonged to the chess elite, collecting quite a few super tournament victories. Three times Timman was a Candidate for the World Championship and his peak in the world rankings was second place, in 1982. For this definitive collection, Timman has revisited his career and subjected his finest efforts to fresh analysis supported by modern technology. The result is startling and fascinating. From the games that he chose for his Timman’s Selected Games (1994, also published as Chess the Adventurous Way), only 10(!) made the cut. Some games that he had been proud of turned out to be flawed, others that he remembered as messy were actually well played. Timman’s Triumphs includes wins against great players such as Karpov, Kasparov, Kortchnoi, Smyslov, Tal, Spassky, Bronstein, Larsen and Topalov. The annotations are in the author’s trademark lucid style, a happy mix of colourful background information and sharp, crystal-clear explanations. Once again Jan Timman shows that he is not only one of the best players the game has seen, but also as one of the best chess analysts and writers.
