Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Hypersonic Flow has been made available to the English speaking reader because of its usefulness for those individuals desirous of obtaining an introduction to the subject. Written by an internationally acknowledged expert in the field of hypersonic flow, the book makes available heretofore unpublished Soviet work, as well as published work little known outside the Soviet Union. The author has however made every effort to include, where appropriate. Western references for the work he discusses. Starting with a general introductory chapter on hypersonic aerodynamics and aerodynamic problems, the remainder of the book concentrates on the inviscid, perfect fluid aspects of hypersonic flow, with emphasis on the fundamental concepts and rational methods of calculation. The book is directed to students of aerodynamics and gas dynamics, as well as to scientists and engineers interested in problems of hypersonic flight. The level of approach is such that it should prove particularly useful as an undergraduate and introductory graduate text.

Book excerpt: Some sixty years after the experimental flights of the North American X-15 hypersonic rocket-powered aircraft, sustained hypervelocity travel is still the next frontier in high-speed transportation. Today, there is much excitement and interest regarding hypersonic vehicles. In fact, many aerospace agencies, large industries, and several start-ups are involved in design activities and experimental campaigns both in wind tunnels and in-flight with full-scale experimental flying test beds and prototypes to make hypersonic travel almost as easy and convenient as airliner travel. Achieving this goal will radically revolutionize the future of civil transportation. This book contains valuable contributions that focus on various design issues related to hypersonic aircraft.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combined Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) and Monotonic Lagrangian Grid (MLG) methodologies are used on the massively parallel Connection Machines CM-5 to solve for the properties of a low density hypersonic flow through a channel containing a wedge. Numerical issues related to grid generation around the obstacle, the effects of resolution in terms of the simulated to actual particle ratio, and the use of time-averaging to obtain a statistically converged solution are discussed. A method is presented for quantifying the effects of the grid on the solution. The flow field shows many important aerodynamic features, such as shock waves, boundary layers, expansion fan, and their interactions. Since the flow is so rarefied, these structures are diffuse compared to what is expected in a continuum flow. For example, the reattachment shock behind the trailing edge of the wedge degenerates into a diffuse viscous layer. Other low density effects include the velocity slip, which peaks near the leading edges where the density is low, and temperature jump of the gas adjacent to the solid surfaces, which is highest at the entrance of the channel and decreases further downstream. The calculated skin friction and heat transfer agree well with the Reynolds analogy for boundary layer flow. The computed pressure distributions along the wall are consistent with hypersonic viscous theory and other DSMC calculations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade, the rapid growth of knowledge in the field of fluid mechanics and heat transfer has resulted in many significant ad vances of interest to students, engineers, and scientists. Accordingly, a course entitled "Modern Developments in Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer" was given at the University of California to present significant recent theoretical and experimental work. The course consisted of seven parts: I-Introduction; II-Hydraulic Analogy for Gas Dynamics; 111- Turbulence and Unsteady Gas Dynamics; IV-Rarefied and Radiation Gas Dynamics; V-Biological Fluid Mechanics; VI-Hypersonic and Plasma Gas Dynamics; and VII-Heat Transfer in Hypersonic Flows. The material, presented by the undersigned as course instructor and by various guest lecturers, could easily be adapted by other universities for use as a text for a one-semester senior or graduate course on the subject. Due to the extensive notes developed during the University of California course, it was decided to publish the material in three volumes, of which the present is the first. The succeeding volumes will be entitled "Selected Topics in Fluid and Bio-Fluid Mechanics" and "Introduction to Steady and Unsteady Gas Dynamics." Finally, I must express a word of appreciation to my wife Irene and to my children, Wellington Jr. and Victoria, who made it possible for me to write and edit this book in the very quiet atmosphere of our home.
