Book Synopsis Women and Portraits in Early Modern Europe by : Andrea Pearson
Download or read book Women and Portraits in Early Modern Europe written by Andrea Pearson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one of the first books to treat portraits of early modern women as a discrete subject, this volume considers the possibilities and limits of agency and identity for women in history and, with particular attention to gender, as categories of analysis for women's images. Its nine original essays on Italy, the Low Countries, Germany, France, and England deepen the usefulness of these analytical tools for portraiture. Among the book's broad contributions: it dispels false assumptions about agency's possibilities and limits, showing how agency can be located outside of conventional understanding, and, conversely, how it can be stretched too far. It demonstrates that agency is compatible with relational gender analysis, especially when alternative agencies such as spectatorship are taken into account. It also makes evident the importance of aesthetics for the study of identity and agency. The individual essays reveal, among other things, how portraits broadened the traditional parameters of portraiture, explored transvestism and same-sex eroticism, appropriated aspects of male portraiture to claim those values for their sitters, and, as sites for gender negotiation, resistance, and debate, invoked considerable relational anxiety. Richly layered in method, the book offers an array of provocative insights into its subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 02 Retratos2,000 Years of Latin American PortraitsMarion Oettinger, Jr., Miguel A. Bretos, Carolyn Kinder Carr et al.A landmark survey of Latin American portraiture and its powerful significance throughout historyThe tradition of portraiture in Latin America is astonishingly long and rich. For over 2,000 years, portraits have been used to preserve the memory of the deceased, bolster the social standing of the aristocracy, mark the deeds of the mighty, advance the careers of politicians, record rites of passage, and mock symbols of the status quo. This beautiful and wide-ranging book—the first to explore the tradition of portraiture in Latin America from pre-Columbian times to the present day—features some 200 works from fifteen countries. Retratos (Portraits) presents an engaging variety of works by such well-known figures as Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Fernando Botero, and José Campeche as well as stunning examples by anonymous and obscure artists. Distinguished contributors discuss the significance of portraits in ancient Mayan civilizations, in the world of colonial Iberians, in the political struggles of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and in a remarkable range of other times and locations. With a wealth of informative details and exquisite color illustrations, Retratos invites readers to appreciate Latin American portraits and their many meanings as never before.F This book is the catalogue for the first exhibition of Latin American portraiture ever organized in the United States. The exhibition is on view at El Museo del Barrio, New York (December 3, 2004 to March 20, 2005); the San Diego Museum of Art (April 16 to June 12, 2005); the Bass Museum of Art, Miami Beach (July 23 to October 2, 2005); the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian, Washington, D.C. Download or read book Setting Off from Macau written by Kaijian Tang and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-16 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is impossible to understand the early history of the Society of Jesus and the Catholic Church in China without understanding the preeminent role played by the island of Macau in the Jesuit missionary endeavor; indeed, it can even be said that Catholicism would not exist in China if there was no Macau. This book seeks to restore Macau to its proper place in the history of Catholicism and the Jesuit missions in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties by offering a unique insight into subjects ranging from the origins of Jesuit missionary work on the island to the history of Jesuit education and Catholic art and music on the Chinese mainland.

Book Synopsis Medieval Women and Their Objects by : Jenny Adams
Download or read book Medieval Women and Their Objects written by Jenny Adams and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays gathered in this volume present multifaceted considerations of the intersection of objects and gender within the cultural contexts of late medieval France and England. Some take a material view of objects, showing buildings, books, and pictures as sites of gender negotiations and resistance and as extensions of women's bodies. Other reconsider the concept of objectification in the lives of fictional and historical medieval women by looking closely at their relation to gendered material objects, taken literally as women's possessions and as figurative manifestations of their desires. Contents: Dedication to Carolyn P. Collette, American professor emerita of English language and literature and a specialist in medieval literature, as she retires from Mount Holyoke College. Part 1: Objects and gender in a material world: The "Thyng Wommen loven moost" : the wife of Bath's fabliau answer ['The wife of Bath's tale', 'Canterbury tales', Geoffrey Chaucer] ; Zenobia's objects ; The object of miraculous song in "The prioress's tale". Part 2: Buildings, books, and women's (self-)fashioning: A gift from the queen : the architecture of the Collège de Navarre in Paris [the first royal college in Paris] ; Anne of Bohemia and the objects of Ricardian kingship ; Royal biography as reliquary : Christine de Pizan's 'Livre des fais et bonnes meurs du sage roy Charles V' ; A gift, a mirror, a memorial : the psalter-hours of Mary de Bohun ; "Parchment and pure flesh" : Elizabeth de Vere, Countess of the twelfth Earl of Oxford, and her book. Part 3: Bodies, objects, and objects in the shape of bodies: Objects of the law : the cases of Dorigen and Virginia ; Galatea's pulse : objects, ethics, and Jean de Meun's conclusion ; Transgender and the chess queen in Chaucer's 'Book of the duchess' ; Statues, bodies, and souls : St. Cecilia and some medieval attitudes toward ancient Rome.
