Book excerpt: More than a photography, coffee table book with 200 stunning pictures, this important book includes 30+ interviews with major people on the island of Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands. They tell of their lives and experiences of how life has changed on VG from l964 when Laurance Rockefeller developed his famous resort, Little Dix Bay, opened its doors, catapulting VG into a worldwide destination spot from the quiet island it was before: no money (exchanges were only through barter), little goods, services, jobs, only a primary education to VG today: enriched with major, worldwide resorts, 200+ privately owned villas, roads, goods, services, job and educational opportunities. Intimate portraits of the interviewees, together with striking pictures of the beauty of VG blend to enhance the story of VG. The book will offer much to anyone interested in life on any small island as it thrives and struggles with the changes of growth and tourism.

Book excerpt: Virgin Gorda Island, Tour Guide. Virgin Gorda is a gorgeous Caribbean gem where the super-rich come to experience unfazed local friendliness and tropical waters. Pristine natural beauty abounds both above and below the water. Steep hills adorn the northwest half of the island towards 'Bitter End', boasting breathtaking views of the BVI and open Atlantic ocean. On the southwestern tip of Gorda, the famous 'baths' can be found; thousands of huge smooth boulders peppering the beach, creating unique natural seawater pools and a mazelike network of tunnels and crevices. Most tourists will arrive at Spanish Town, the main settlement on the island. A few convenience stores, watersports companies and places to eat cluster around the yacht marina there. Car rental and various day tours can be booked from Spanish Town, or even prior to that when you book your ferry to the island with us. Around the turquoise waters of Gorda are some of the most pristine spots for snorkelling and diving in the BVI. Swimming the waters of certain areas of the western coast can almost be guaranteed with sea turtle sightings among the decor of pretty soft coral and vibrant fish. In the north sound near bitter end, a watersports and yachting mecca awaits. Kitesurfing is the mainstay here, as strong gusts with sizeable waves plough in steadily from the Atlantic. The east coast is rugged and unsuitable for leisure purposes, other than enjoying the stunning views of wave after wave pounding in under the tropical sun from the high vantage point offered at Gorda Peak National Park.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to look specifically at the movement of Cornish men and women to and from the Caribbean from the early days of colonialism. A fascinating subject for those with an interest in all things Cornish, be they in Cornwall, in the Caribbean, or in the wider Cornish diaspora. The Cornish in the Caribbean is the first study to tell the stories of some of the many Cornish men and women who went to the Caribbean. Some became wealthy plantation owners, while others came as indentured servants and labourers. Cornish men were active in the armed services, taking part in the numerous sea and land battles fought by the competing European powers throughout the region. Cornish officers and crew sailed on the ships of the Falmouth Packet Service which took the mail to and from the Caribbean. Methodism was strong in Cornwall and Methodist missionaries and their wives came to the Caribbean to evangelise both the enslaved and the newly free. The most striking transfer of Cornish skills to the Caribbean was to be found in mining. As Cornish mining declined, and the Great Emigration of miners and their families got underway, Cornish mining engineers, captains and miners went out to mines throughout the Caribbean. “Meticulously researched and highly readable” Bridget Brereton, Professor Emerita, University of the West Indies.
