Book Synopsis The Anthropology of Complex Economic Systems by : Niccolo Leo Caldararo
Download or read book The Anthropology of Complex Economic Systems written by Niccolo Leo Caldararo and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2013-11-14 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today we live in what Ulrich Beck has aptly characterized as a “risk society” shaped by intensifying crises outside of our control and seemingly outside of our comprehension. The master narrative that was supposed to lead us to secular salvation—economics—has proved to be a large part of the problem rather than the much anticipated solution. In The Anthropology of Complex Economic Systems, Niccolo Caldararo offers a much more radical and challenging answer: that the fundamental assumptions on which the modern “science” of economics has been erected are false, and that it is through the medium of anthropology, particularly the relatively neglected field of economic anthropology, that an alternative and sound basis for both the understanding of economic behavior and for the shaping of economic futures can be constructed. Caldararo not only challenges the foundational assumptions of conventional economic theory, but situates economic behavior (something quite different and universal amongst human beings) in both a historical and an ecological context. Contemporary discussions of “sustainability,” especially in the field of development studies, have oddly neglected to look to anthropology. Economic anthropology, is the repository of a vast store of wisdom both about actual alternative and workable economic systems and about their evolution. By drawing on this source, Caldararo builds a model of the evolution of human economies which stir up substantial debate, shows how economic anthropology provides a tool for the interrogation of economic theory, and ties economics to ecology. It has been the rupture of this fundamental relationship that lies at the basis of much of our present crisis and the unsustainable economic patterns that humans have created. By bringing together in a new configuration economic anthropology, ecology, and culture history, Caldararo not only proposes a new model of human social evolution, but equally importantly creates a methodology for speaking to, and against, our present economic and environmental situation.

Book Synopsis The History of Umuchu by : S. A. NNOLIM
Download or read book The History of Umuchu written by S. A. NNOLIM and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2007-10-29 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first aim of this book is to inform and educate Umuchu boys and girls, both at home and abroad, about the origins and customs of Umuchu town. This book may, also, be of interest to students of history, especially of Igbo towns and villages of which Umuchu is a typical example. As the years roll by and more and more people begin to live in cities, they will soon be unable to trace out their former towns or where they originated from. It is the duty of those of us who saw or heard these things, first hand, to pass on what we saw, heard, and learnt from our own fathers, to our own children who we, hope, will, also, pass these on to their children. For he or she, who grows up, without knowing his or her origins and customs, is like a stranger walking in the dark.

Examining both the rich biological heritage of the world's second largest continent and the very serious human threats to it, Africa and the Middle East explores the impact global pollution and a burgeoning population are having on landscape and wildlife alike. How is global warming responsible for the rapidly expanding Sahara Desert? Can local populations be recruited to preserve threatened species? Over 80 percent of Madagascar's species are endemic, the highest percentage of any major ecological region in the world, such as the highly endangered aye-aye which resembles a cross between a monkey, a bat, and a woodpecker, and the giraffe-necked weevil, a red rainforest insect with a neck like a fire truck rescue ladder. Readers will learn all about these fascinating species and much more.
