Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive commentary on Aeneid 11. The commentary treats fully matters of linguistic and textual interpretation, metre and prosody, grammar, lexicon and idiom, of Roman behaviour, social and ritual, as well as Virgil’s sources and the literary tradition. New critical approaches and developments in Virgilian studies have been taken into account with economy and fairness. The Latin text is presented with a facing English translation. The commentary is followed by an appendix on Penthesilea and the Epic Cycle and a second appendix which discusses the weaknesses of Aeneid 11. The book concludes with English and Latin indices. In approach and learning, this commentary continues Nicholas Horsfall’s impressive work as a commentator and will advance our understanding of the Aeneid and the poet Virgil.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first intermediate-student edition of a selection from Virgil's Aeneid XI. Lines 1–224, 498–521, 532–596, 648–689 and 725–835 are included as Latin text with an accompanying commentary and vocabulary. Focusing on a deliberately concise extract from the original, this edition is designed to be manageable for students reading the text for the first time while also perfectly encapsulating the interest of the longer work and inspiring further study of it. A detailed introduction explains points of historical and stylistic interest, encompassing the whole of Book XI, including sections omitted here from the Latin. In Book XI Pallas, the warrior son of Evander who was killed by Turnus, is buried, amid the mourning of his father and the Trojans. After a truce to collect and bury the dead on both sides, fighting resumes, during which the warrior-maiden Camilla battles bravely for the Latins before being killed. The events of the book take up just four days: Pallas' funeral occupies the first; the second and third are devoted (briefly) to the truce and burials; the fourth, taking up the second half of the book, is concerned with Camilla's aristeia, in which she is likened to an Amazon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love and tragedy dominate book four of Virgil's most powerful work, building on the violent emotions invoked by the storms, battles, warring gods, and monster-plagued wanderings of the epic's opening. Destined to be the founder of Roman culture, Aeneas, nudged by the gods, decides to leave his beloved Dido, causing her suicide in pursuit of his historical destiny. A dark plot, in which erotic passion culminates in sex, and sex leads to tragedy and death in the human realm, unfolds within the larger horizon of a supernatural sphere, dominated by power-conscious divinities. Dido is Aeneas' most significant other, and in their encounter Virgil explores timeless themes of love and loyalty, fate and fortune, the justice of the gods, imperial ambition and its victims, and ethnic differences. This course book offers a portion of the original Latin text, study questions, a commentary, and interpretative essays. Designed to stretch and stimulate readers, Ingo Gildenhard's incisive commentary will be of particular interest to students of Latin at both A2 and undergraduate level. It extends beyond detailed linguistic analysis to encourage critical engagement with Virgil's poetry and discussion of the most recent scholarly thought.

Book excerpt: Virgil became a school author in his own lifetime and the centre of the Western canon for the next 1800 years, exerting a major influence on European literature, art, and politics. This Companion is designed as an indispensable guide for anyone seeking a fuller understanding of an author critical to so many disciplines. It consists of essays by seventeen scholars from Britain, the USA, Ireland and Italy which offer a range of different perspectives both traditional and innovative on Virgil's works, and a renewed sense of why Virgil matters today. The Companion is divided into four main sections, focussing on reception, genre, context, and form. This ground-breaking book not only provides a wealth of material for an informed reading but also offers sophisticated insights which point to the shape of Virgilian scholarship and criticism to come.

Book excerpt: The first six books of David Hadbawnik's astonishing modern translation of the Aeneid appeared from Shearsman Books in 2015. He now brings the whole project to a spectacular conclusion in a volume accompanied by Omar Al-Nakib's dramatic abstract illustrations. "Few narrative poems have possessed the Western imagination like Virgil's twelve-book epic written during Augustus's triumphant consolidation of the Roman Empire. [...] This new volume goes a long way toward moving the narrative into the hands of contemporary readers, drawing out a playful understanding of the ancient story while exhibiting modern preferences for poetic interaction and inquiry into the history and terms of poetic form and translation. Hadbawnik shows the fun to be had in language's etymological resonance, and he delights in scenes of dramatic fulfillment and failure. His translation distills the essence of the narrative by directing a reader's perception of the tale. [...] The turbulent energy Hadbawnik frames in the Aeneid is reinforced by Omar Al-Nakib's illustrations. The images are extraordinarily active, shimmering. Figurative abstractions in black and red ink commit visual renderings that merge a new language with the text. A kind of haptic interplay takes place in textures of visual and auditory modes that interact in the experience of reading. The interplay between the text and images vividly enhance the poem's movements. Readers enter it anew as a work of contemporary art and not as a furzy excavation or dour education in classical writing. It is instead a vivid opportunity to confront our own pleasure for words and images violently imagined in the ancient corpus." -from Dale Martin Smith's Introduction, 'The Warrior Agōn'.

Book excerpt: This book contains the complete text of Aeneid XI, together with a rendering into Latin prose and a running summary of the whole in English. Its main intended audience is A-Level Latin students in England. Aeneid XI is one of the set texts by the OCR Board for 2020 and 2021. A larger and less easily defined audience is anyone, in any time or place, who wants to read Vergil, but whose Latin is not ready for the challenge. I have reordered the words in a more obvious sequence. I have replaced many words with more natural alternatives. I have supplied pronouns and verbs and prepositions that could not be fitted into the metrical structure. I have broken up the paragraphs, and formatted the whole as if it were a novel. The advantage is that the result is still Latin. It is Latin that most A-Level students will be able to read without too much looking in a dictionary - and not too much head-scratching thereafter. Unlike any English version, it is obviously related to the original, and is a fair key to understanding the original. It also gives students a piece of Latin that they can read at length, and that will be good practice for the unseen translation. Other Classical Texts by Sean Gabb on Amazon: Acts of the Apostles: A Parallel Text - Greek, Latin, English Aeneid VI: Text with Notes and English and Latin Prose Versions Ars Grammatica Stories from Paul the Deacon Stories from the Life of Christ From the Amazon Reviews: This text is a great collection of passages from the life of Christ that perfectly fills the need for an intermediate reader, and has a great selective dictionary at the end with just the words used in the texts, so it is quick to use. This suited my level perfectly as the passages were not too complex, but beyond beginner level, and include enough repetition in the stories and dialogue to help memory retention. (Stories from the Life of Christ) [G]oing from Latin lessons to real Latin texts is a huge jump. Here the author has chosen later texts written by Paul the Deacon.... The Latin is simpler as a result and it makes the book a very useful stepping stone.... [My Latin has now] gone rusty, and this book looks an ideal way for me to recapture some of that lost prowess. Also it has a vocabulary.... Yes I have a Latin dictionary, but experience... has shown me the value of having a vocabulary or dictionary at the back. (Stories from Paul the Deacon)
