Pour l'auteur, la vulnérabilité nouvelle du corps infirmier, confronté de tout temps à la maîtrise de la déraison, renvoie en grande partie au positionnement et aux orientations actuelles de la profession infirmière, sources de décalages identitaires. La fonction d'autorité par exemple n'est ni enseignée, ni mise en situation aujourd'hui. Pour appuyer sa démonstration, l'auteur procède à l'observation attentive d'un hôpital donné, élargie à l'ensemble des établissements français de psychiatrie publique. Volontairement orientée en direction des professionnels exerçant en psychiatrie, soignants ou gestionnaires, l'analyse présentée ici propose une représentation non fataliste de la violence envisagée principalement comme un défi pour les établissements hospitaliers concernés.
