Book excerpt: Cienna is a strong-willed gal with an independent and assertive attitude. If anyone could have fought off an abduction, it should have been her. However, even she is unable to fight two able-bodied men and the drugs that they use to get her in the back of the van. Her journey begins as she awakes, and then is sold to a friendly man in a baseball hat named Mike, who promises to take her back to her family but instead ties her to a pole in his barn. Mike becomes her friend, saving her from the man who abducted her and violently took her innocence. But eventually she discovers Mike's secrets and realizes that he too is a monster. When she is finally rescued, she is left with a consequence of the men's sin and must decide along with her family what to do. Jasmine is sweet and kind and always berating herself for not being assertive like her friend Cienna. When Jasmine awakes, she is in a brothel, locked up in the "Trouble Room." Jasmine remains convinced for the rest of her journey that she has been very bad and sentenced to this place of horror. She deals with her plight by enjoying the drugs that her owners provide and developing a second personality. Her new friend dies at the brothel, but not before requesting a favor of Jasmine. Book Synopsis Gross Human Rights Violations: A Search for Causes by : Hilde Hey
Download or read book Gross Human Rights Violations: A Search for Causes written by Hilde Hey and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1945, it is estimated, more people have perished as a result of gross human rights violations than as a result of war, yet we have little knowledge of why governments commit gross human rights violations. The present study, seeking to obtain an understanding of the causes underlying gross human rights violations, compares the human rights situation in a country where gross human rights violations are the rule (Guatemala) with the situation in a country where this type of violations does not occur (Costa Rica). The focus of the study is on the short-term sources within the political system which are perceived by those in power as a threat to their power and which trigger gross human rights violations. Furthermore, the long-term sources or background factors which set the stage and allow gross human rights violations to be perpetrated are analysed. The study concludes by highlighting the causes of gross human rights violations and briefly addresses how these violations are presently dealt with in Guatemala.
Book Synopsis Determinants of Gross Human Rights Violations by State and State-sponsored Actors in Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and Argentina, 1960-1990 by : Wolfgang S. Heinz
Download or read book Determinants of Gross Human Rights Violations by State and State-sponsored Actors in Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and Argentina, 1960-1990 written by Wolfgang S. Heinz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the gross human rights violations that characterized the military repression in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay from the 1960s to the 1980s. Dr Wolfgang Heinz, the author of three of the four case studies is a German scholar. The second author, Dr Hugo Frühling, is a Chilean researcher. Both are renowned human rights specialists who have done in-depth research on the causes of gross human rights violations in these countries. They have interviewed generals and officers directly involved in the repression. They have unearthed secret documents and, building on existing scholarship, they have managed to draw a unique picture of the mechanisms of repressive domestic social control. They have investigated international factors as well as the dynamics of the interaction between guerrilleros and urban terrorists on the one hand, and the military, the police forces and the death squads on the other. The result is a comprehensive volume, broad and comparative in scope, and written with clinical detachment but also with humanitarian sympathy for the victims of repression.
