Book excerpt: Not so long ago, it was relatively easy to wake up overlooking Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong and go to sleep in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge; to travel from Venice to Istanbul in time for dinner. The international network of the art world, in particular, made it easy to slip through time and borders--with the right invitation and the right passport. You may never have been to Basel, Switzerland for the art fairs, but you might certainly feel as though you have, experiencing it exclusively through the spate of other people's images. Vik Muniz's series Postcards from Nowhere grapples with how, through photographs, we have come to "see" and understand distant yet iconic sites we may never actually view with our own eyes. "The images we hold in our heads are an assemblage," notes Muniz. "They are an amalgam of every image of those locations that we have ever seen." More critically, the series serves as an homage not just to the quasi-obsolete artifact of the picture postcard, but to a way of life that has now been put in sharp relief. Muniz's images--created out of collaged pieces of vintage postcards from the artist's personal collection--materialize the experience and longing of travel, triangulating between the traveler, a distant location, and the recipient who, increasingly, remains at home. Volume I presents thirty-two single postcards displaying each of the images in the series. Volume II presents a series of thirty-six postcards that, when assembled, can be viewed as a single, large-scale work of 30 x 40 inches. The process of assembling the larger, single image is akin to the original act of collage--or like that of assembling a mosaic crafted from disparate pieces that have traveled from afar, but when brought together, conjure something that is larger, more complete than any individual element could be on its own.

Book excerpt: Vic Muniz's images and his playful approach to making art captivate children and adults alike. Muniz works with everyday materials--such as peanut butter and jelly, chocolate syrup, and even garbage--to make images that often reference masterpieces or popular icons. Jelly, Garbage + Toys, drawn from interviews with children, is an interactive first-person narrative that presents Muniz's personal story and his art, focusing on some of his many processes and mediums. The book emphasizes the importance of play in the creation of art while challenging children to think about how images are made and what they mean. The design--with graphic novel-inspired speech bubbles, liftable flaps, and a Turkish-map fold (all four sides open)--helps communicate Muniz's exuberant message.

Book excerpt: Poiesis Bruscky surveys the five-decade career of Brazilian conceptual artist Paulo Bruscky (born 1949). In the 1960s, and throughout the ensuing decades of Brazil's military rule, Bruscky used mail art, collage, artist's books, visual poetry and newspaper interventions to launch his often humorous critiques of the country's dictatorship. He is famed for his courageous, political performance works (which have often placed him in direct conflict with the law or military authorities), as well as sculpture, sound art and street art; Bruscky also exchanged correspondence with members of the Fluxus group, assembling one of the largest Fluxus collections in Latin America. In this volume, a sort of album version of the artist monograph that is well suited to the artist's fondness for printed media, Bruscky's work is oriented for readers through commentary from writer and critic Adolfo Montejo Navas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published on the occasion of the art exhibition Screen Time: Photography and Video Art in the Internet Age, this catalog features a selection of leading international artists who engage with and critique the role of media in contemporary society. Their work demonstrates what has become known as post-internet artistic practices—art that may or may not be made for the internet but nevertheless acknowledges online culture as an omnipresent influence, inseparable from contemporary social conditions. They ask what it means to be a photographer when everyone is an Instagram influencer; what it means to make video art when everyone is a TikTok video star; and how to deliver meaningful social commentary in the age of the meme. The exhibition and accompanying catalog showcase artwork by N. Dash, Nathalie Djurberg, Marcel Dzama, Peter Funch, Cyrus Kabiru, William Kentridge, Christian Marclay, Marilyn Minter, Vik Muniz, Otobong Nkanga, Erwin Olaf, Robin Rhode, Vee Speers, Mary Sue, Puck Verkade, Huang Yan. Published by Bucknell University Press for the Samek Art Museum. Distributed worldwide by Rutgers University Press.

Book excerpt: Brazilian-born artist Vic Muniz, best known for recreating imagery from art history and pop culture using unexpected and everyday materials--chocolate syrup, disused computer parts and diamonds, to name just a few--preserves his socially and politically layered "drawings" in large-scale color photographs. Featured in some of the most important collections in the world from MoMA to the Metropolitan Museum and Tate Gallery, Munitz's audacious work and way of thinking to date is presented chronologically in this vividly designed boxed 2-volume catalogue raisonne. Comprised of over 1400 images, an introduction by independent curator Ligia Canongia and interview with Muniz by artist Luisa Duarte, each body of work is accompanied by an informative essay by the artist on his inspirations and methods. In an era when great art has become more familiar to us through photographs than by seeing the work itself, Muniz has created another context to define the familiar, his use of materials offering compelling political and social critique.

Book excerpt: Viz Muniz is celebrated for his joyful, quirky, dark and occasionally mind-boggling work that riffs on popular photographic imagery, referencing social icons and cultural realities and juxtaposing these themes in fascinating ways. This book features an extraordinary selection of works that span Muniz's entire career - more than 150 colour illustrations display the enormous range of Muniz's work and the disorienting and expansive logic of his world. International icon Elizabeth Taylor is portrayed with diamonds with as much reverence as Brazilian landfill workers whose portraits are created from the trash they collect. The Mona Lisa is recreated in peanut butter and jelly. Artist Jackson Pollock is depicted in his studio in a work made entirely out of chocolate syrup.

Book excerpt: Changing Circumstances - Looking At The Future Of The Planet is an expansive presentation of international contemporary photography, video, and new media art addressing the challenges presented by global change. The book shows the works of over 30+ leading international artists, focusing on the ways in which photographic, video and digital art reflects on our relationship, as individuals and as a society, to the natural environment around us. An important aspect of this presentation is how individual artists are using their work to initiate and actively support change that seeks to correct the negative impact of human behaviour on the natural environment. The purpose of the book is to provoke, through visual art, new ways of thinking about how we see our role within the natural environment and our connection(s) to the rest of the planet - and how this affects our future. While we cannot ignore the problems of the planet today, the book will not simply be a recitation of negative prognoses. Rather it will look at ways in which artists and scientists are re-visioning our relationship with the earth and space. The artists and artworks address a broad range of issues that we understand as key challenges to the future of the earth - including climate change, migration, water, energy production, and natural resources. Many of the works present atypical uses of visual art and photography to address these changes with new media, moving image, performance, and text. Lead essays will be provided by the pioneering curator Wendy Watriss, Co-Curator of the Changing Circumstances Exhibition and Co-Founder of FotoFest International, and by FotoFest Executive Director and Co-Curator of the Changing Circumstances Exhibition, Steven Evans. The authors will look at the shifting relationships between contemporary art photography, issues of global change, and activism. Co-Founder of FotoFest International and Changing Circumstances Co-Curator Frederick Baldwin, with Watriss and Evans, will provide a philosophical overview of the project in the introduction.
