Download or read book What Is the Mission of the Church? written by Kevin DeYoung and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2011-09-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social justice and mission are hot topics today: there's a wonderful resurgence of motivated Christians passionate about spreading the gospel and caring for the needs of others. But in our zeal to get sharing and serving, many are unclear on gospel and mission. Yes, we are called to spend ourselves for the sake of others, but what is the church's unique priority as it engages the world? DeYoung and Gilbert write to help Christians "articulate and live out their views on the mission of the church in ways that are theologically faithful, exegetically careful, and personally sustainable." Looking at the Bible's teaching on evangelism, social justice, and shalom, they explore the what, why, and how of the church's mission. From defining "mission", to examining key passages on social justice and their application, to setting our efforts in the context of God's rule, DeYoung and Gilbert bring a wise, studied perspective to the missional conversation. Readers in all spheres of ministry will grow in their understanding of the mission of the church and gain a renewed sense of urgency for Jesus' call to preach the Word and make disciples.

Each contributor offers his or her view and responds to the other four views. Contributors include Stephen B. Bevans, Darrell L. Guder, Ruth Padilla DeBorst, Edward Rommen, and Ed Stetzer. Book Synopsis Missionary Mom by : Shontelle Brewer
Download or read book Missionary Mom written by Shontelle Brewer and published by Kregel Publications. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mission work is not for the faint of heart. We admire those brave souls who leave behind the comforts of home and go to foreign fields to bring the love of Christ to people in need. And sometimes it feels uninspiring to be stuck at home in the day-to-day of parenting when others are out there changing the world, soul by soul. Shontell Brewer has a message to renew the spirits of everyday moms: they too have a critical calling as the very first missionaries their children meet. In her informal, funny voice, Brewer points out the many unexpected parallels: A missionary may need to learn a foreign language and new customs to understand and communicate with those around her. A missionary has to follow the path God puts before her, sacrificing sleep, comfort, time, and toilets. Sound like any moms you know? Brewer tackles common challenges from mom-guilt to the temptation to be a martyr to those days when it feels like only a box of cookies and a Netflix binge can restore a sense of peace. But through it all, she shares the truth that there's more to parenting than potty training and orthodontist appointments. Mothers make the love of Christ tangible and understandable to their children. With determination and a few purposeful steps, moms can embrace their own mission field, leading their families--heart, soul, mind, and strength--to Christ.

Book Synopsis Assaulting the Gates by : Rev. Paul D. Borden
Download or read book Assaulting the Gates written by Rev. Paul D. Borden and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2011-12-01 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn the “Big Picture” approach that will aim your congregation at the mission field in your back yard, or around the world. Many churches want to make the transition from an inward to an outward focus, from catering to the needs of members to reaching out into the world to make disciples of Jesus Christ. Too often they try to accomplish this radical change by taking half steps and partial measures, initiating a new program here or adding a new staff members there. Yet this kind of change requires more. To succeed in changing its core focus this way, a congregation must learn strategic thinking; it must commit itself to seeing the big picture, and to taking the steps necessary to paint that picture afresh. Everyone, including pastors, lay leaders, key teams and groups, and the congregation as a whole must be involved in a process of transformation. Paul D. Borden, author of Hit the Bullseye and Direct Hit, knows that this transformation will not be easy. But if the target is bringing more people into saving relationship with Jesus Christ, what could be more worthwhile?

Book Synopsis Called To Mission by : Mirjam Scarborough
Download or read book Called To Mission written by Mirjam Scarborough and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-02-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PAPERBACK. 192 pages Crown Quarto format. According to the meta-study ReMAP, between 1992 and 1994 one missionary in twenty prematurely left mission service each year. This implies the loss of half of all missionaries every thirteen years. With this in mind, it is widely thought that a clear sense of call serves to prevent such dropout. This detailed and compassionate study of Mennonite women missionaries in Central Africa finds this to be true-in the short term. But in the long term, the sense of call itself tends to turn on the call-resulting in burnout and dropout. Through extensive field work, the author charts the course of missionaries who remodeled the call-turning its burden into blessing. This is embedded in a careful theological analysis, drawing on a wide sweep of Mennonite thought and praxis.

The students are becoming secure and confident that God loves them and has created them with incredible gifts, talents and capacity. The students now know they have a bright future, that they can dream dreams and aspire to whatever God has poured into them. Transformation is an ongoing journey for all involved and there is more to do. Transformational development and mission are a never ending action of God’s love. It is not just one project or another, it is assisting persons to see themselves as God sees them and to realize that they are the change agents in their lives and communities. We then understand that transformational development is generational. The requisite is love.

Book Synopsis The View From Mars Hill by : Charles B. Jones
Download or read book The View From Mars Hill written by Charles B. Jones and published by Cowley Publications. This book was released on 2005-04-25 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are Christians to make of religious diversity? Are other religions simply wrong? Is this great multiplicity something to appreciate and foster? Is there any way to judge whether one religion is better than another, or are all equally good options? What has brought about such a wealth of diversity and tension in the first place? Charles Jones traces the rich history of Christianity’s many encounters with other religions, from the Roman Empire and Paul’s speech to the Athenians on Mars Hill (Acts 17:16–34) to the “discovery” of non-European peoples, through various currents of philosophy and science, and in both the peaceful and violent meetings of Christianity and other religions today. Jones suggests that there are patterns to the way people meet across religious boundaries. He helps us see the tension between our desire for religious coherence and our need to build bridges to avert conflict and foster good relations—the tension between integrity and openness. By the end of the book, readers will have a sense of the history of Christianity’s engagement with religious diversity, as well as tools to move interfaith life forward. Excellent for parish education and informal discussion groups, this eye-opening guide takes a vital step in our understanding of our roles in a world of religious diversity.
