Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deforestation-free production will be a requirement of the global market from now through 2030. More than 1,000 financial institutions (e.g. banks, trusts, donors) and 600 multinational companies have pledged to produce and supply zero-deforestation agricultural products, and these establishments (financial institutions and multinational companies) are developing a process of testing, screening and certification for service providers and countries that produce or export agroforestry products. The governments of European countries, the Americas and Australia are also aggressively building a legal framework to monitor and verify that imported goods have not resulted in deforestation or forest degradation. In Vietnam, 92 domestic and foreign companies from 21 fields and industries have signed commitments to achieve zero deforestation by 2020. These industries include: fashion (apparel and footwear); agriculture; cosmetics and personal care; food and agriculture; retail chains; home construction (furniture and flooring, and renovation supplies); consumer goods; paper and packaging; printing and publishing; and automotive industry (rubber, automobile manufacturing). These companies contribute greatly to the national GDP and local economic development, and are major buyers of agricultural products including coffee, wood, soybeans and poultry. However, businesses in Vietnam are not prepared to adapt the supply chain of agroforestry products to this trend; they require knowledge and skills to face the new market requirements. Without further research and long-term planning, Vietnam's agroforestry products industry is at risk of losing market share to fierce international competition, leading to enormous economic losses for the country. The government needs to develop a legal framework to support and monitor companies that meet deforestation-free commitments, while building the capacity of stakeholders to respond to the requirements of new markets, in order to ensure a solid position for agroforestry products and their sustainable contribution to the national economy over the next 30 years.

Book excerpt: Vietnam Business Guide GETTING STARTED IN TOMORROW'S MARKET TODAY Kimberly and Brian Vierra have written the most useful guide I have seen for foreigners who want to do business in Vietnam. I've spent years in the country, but I learned a lot from this book. It's full of practical information about unique aspects of Vietnam's business culture; registration, legal and tax issues; working with local business partners; living conditions in Vietnam and industry-specific opportunities. Interviews with experienced expatriates bring the issues to life. The Vierras are very frank about tough problems such as corruption, but they also convey a real affection for and understanding of this wonderful country. Raymond Burghardt Former US Ambassador to Vietnam; Director, Indochina Capital Corporation Vietnam Business Guide is the book that every seasoned Southeast Asia hand, bellied up to a Saigon bar, says he ought to write. Be thankful the Vierras made good on this common boast. Unstinting, pragmatic, penetrating and incredibly accessible, this highly readable volume may not keep you from the suffering the pain of starting up, but if read closely, with a yellow highlighter may very well spare you the agony of undue blood-letting. There will be blood, but Vietnam Business Guide will mitigate the flow. James Sullivan Managing Director, Mandarin Media; Author, National Geographic Vietnam and Over the Moat Vietnam Business Guide provides practical and balanced information about Vietnam for foreigners to plan their first steps to enter the market. What separate this book from others are its reality and practicality, brought about by both the authors who themselves are entrepreneurs having walked the same journey and the experts who contributed their experiences on different topics throughout the book. The business landscape in Vietnam is speedily changing. Some facts, by the time you read the book, may need updating but still it serves best in providing newcomers essential starting points a should-read book for those who consider doing business in Vietnam! Vu Minh Tri General Director, Yahoo! Vietnam Co. Ltd. I believe that Vietnam Business Guide has been very objective and true to its purpose. It covers almost all relevant business and personal challenges that one would face in Vietnam, with the authors' firsthand experience shining through in their handling of culture issues and the Vietnamese mindset. Despite the constraints on size, it has sufficient details and a wealth of references to guide entrepreneurs and business executives in the right direction. Crisply written with interviews and real-life anecdotes, it makes for a very interesting read. A must-read book and an invaluable tool kit for anyone looking to Vietnam for business. Book excerpt: This clear and accessible text explores Vietnam's successful transition from neo-Stalinist central planning to a market economy—\"Vietnamese style.\" After describing the north Vietnamese system prior to 1975 and its colonial and precolonial antecedents, the authors uncover the mechanisms of that changeover. They contend that the Vietnamese transition was largely bottom-up in character and that it evolved over a long enough period for the country's political economy to adjust. This explains in part the rapid shift to a high-growth, externally oriented development path in the early 1990s, despite the loss of Soviet aid and the lack of significant Western substitutes until 1992-1993. Based upon extensive incountry experience, a wealth of primary materials, and wide comparative knowledge of development issues, the book challenges many preconceived notions, both about Vietnam and about the general nature of transition processes.

This book was released on 2015-03-13 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of several weeks in June and July of 2014, Rubicon Strategy Group conducted close to forty interviews with country managers of pharmaceutical and device companies, director level administrators in public and private hospitals, successful pharmacy and medical device shop owners, and entrepreneurs at the forefront of the cutting edge in the Vietnam healthcare market. In addition the team went out and conducted a validated survey questionnaire of consumers to judge their preference for particular products, and their preference for healthcare access options in the public and the private sector. The goal of this paper revealed itself in the course of compiling the data: to bring out insights from the front lines of the sales channels and the business models that make up the pharmaceutical and medical device markets in Vietnam. It is the hope of the authors that the information presented in this way can help inform sales strategies and the development of value add services for companies involved in the marketing and/or distribution of drug and medical device products in Vietnam. On the eve of a pair of large negotiations, - a free trade agreement negotiation between the EU and Vietnam, set to be finalized in October 2014, and the negotiation of the Trans Pacific Asean partnership – it was found that much of the conversation with healthcare system company representatives and sales channel participants turned to the issue of the public tender system as well as some of the hardships brought on by Vietnam’s ongoing healthcare market reform. Consequently, one section of this report is geared towards exploring how the policy and regulatory level challenges of the current tender process. However, in constructing this section it became clear that the value of the research conducted during this study is not simply in explaining the tender process as it is supposed to function at the policy level and the attendant issues that stem from that design, but also highlighting how the tender process impacts the decision making of pharmaceutical and medical device executives in-country, in real time, as well as how it impacts the various operators across sales channels. In other words, a core value of the study is necessarily attendant to its exploration of the strategies currently being employed by executives active in Vietnam’s healthcare market. In trying to present a picture of the ground-level impacts of policies and regulatory structures impacting Vietnam’s healthcare space, it is of course important to present a clear outline of the issues that the research revealed. At the same time, it became apparent to fully communicate the ground-level happenings as they related to the tender process, it was also helpful to present a series of case studies that would help add color and nuance to the issues clearly presented.

Book excerpt: Based on ethnographic research conducted over several years, Market Frictions examines the tensions and frictions that emerge from the interaction of global market forces, urban planning policies, and small-scale trading activities in the Vietnamese border city of Lào Cai. Here, it is revealed how small-scale traders and market vendors experience the marketplace, reflect upon their trading activities, and negotiate current state policies and regulations. It shows how “traditional” Vietnamese marketplaces have continually been reshaped and adapted to meet the changing political-economic circumstances and civilizational ideals of the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vietnam has officially admitted its failure to achieve industrialized economy status by 2020. This failure is partly due to its inability to grow a strong local manufacturing base and develop key strategic industries. The participation of Vingroup, the country’s largest private conglomerate, in the automotive industry has sparked new hopes for Vietnam’s industrialization drive. The company, through its subsidiary Vinfast, aims to become a leading automaker in Southeast Asia with an annual capacity of 500,000 units and a localization ratio of 60 per cent by 2025. Challenges that Vinfast faces include its unproven track record in the industry; the limited size of the national car market; the lack of infrastructure to support car usage in Vietnam; the intense competition from foreign brands; and its initial reliance on imported technologies and know-hows. However, Vinfast enjoys certain advantages in the domestic market, including the large potential of the Vietnamese automotive market; its freedom as a new automaker to define its business strategies without having to deal with legacy issues; Vingroup’s sound business and financial performance and its ecosystem; strong support from the Vietnamese government; and nationalist sentiments that will encourage certain Vietnamese customers to choose its products. If Vinfast is successful, it will boost Vietnam’s GDP growth and reinvent the country’s automotive industry. Its success will also contribute significantly to the realization of Vietnam’s industrialization ambitions and bring private actors into the centre stage of the economy. If the company fails, however, it will cause considerable problems for both Vingroup and the Vietnamese economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Palgrave Pivot provides an introduction to the economy and business environment of Vietnam, a member of the ASEAN Economic Community whose economy is rapidly growing. The introduction argues that though there may be perceived disadvantages in investing in Vietnam, there are a number of benefits as well, such as the country's openness to trade and foreign direct investment, the increasing ease of doing business there and the dynamism of the economy. The book then provides an overview of Vietnam's economic policy since 1975, covering reunification, attempts at a command economy, and finally renovation under Doi Moi Policy. Further chapters cover the expansion of the private sector, interest in foreign investment, and the peculiarities of marketing and finance in Vietnam. As an edited volume with chapters written by Vietnamese scholars across economics, history, and business, this book is critical reading for researchers studying Vietnam and other Asian economies and for businesses interested in expanding into that market.
