Book Synopsis viens, embrassons-nous by : Ralph Günther Mohnnau
Download or read book viens, embrassons-nous written by Ralph Günther Mohnnau and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ralph Günther Mohnnau's extensive oeuvre makes him one of the most important haijin of the present day. From the wealth of his poetry, he has presented a selection of 306 haiku in three volumes on the theme of love and passion. This work is particularly important against the background of the classical Japanese haiku tradition, in which love is hardly dealt with. It is all the more indebted to Ralph Günther Mohnnau, who introduces the reader to the world of love in the classical form of a haiku with playful elegance, with a fine sense for the many facets of love and with masterly linguistic art. He has enriched Far Eastern poetry with a new dimension, all the more precious because it introduces the most human of human experiences and feelings into the three-line gems of Japanese verse.
Book Synopsis Pierre-Laurent de Belloy, 'Le Siège de Calais' by : Logan J. Connors
Download or read book Pierre-Laurent de Belloy, 'Le Siège de Calais' written by Logan J. Connors and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Le Siège de Calais, hailed by its author in 1765 as France’s ‘première tragédie nationale’, rolled into Paris like a storm. Pierre-Laurent de Belloy’s play about French bravery during the Hundred Years’ War (1337-1453) appeared on the heels of France’s defeat in the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763). Le Siège de Calais was performed throughout Europe and published numerous times during the second half of the eighteenth century. De Belloy emerged as a national hero, receiving prizes from Louis XV, accolades from the city of Calais, and membership to the prestigious Académie française. Since the French Revolution, however, the popularity of Le Siège de Calais has eclipsed, owing to its overt glorification of France’s royal machine. Several hundred years later, the play warrants a fresh look from a holistic perspective. De Belloy’s tragedy and the varied responses it provoked – many of which are included in this edition – offer complex representations of French political history and patriotic sentiment. Le Siège de Calais reveals conflicting images of gender roles, political debate and family values during the twilight of the Ancien régime; it also constituted one of the last moments when serious drama asserted its role as a popular force.

Book Synopsis The Folly of the Cross by : Richard Viladesau
Download or read book The Folly of the Cross written by Richard Viladesau and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Folly of the Cross is the fourth book in Richard Viladesau's series examining the aesthetics and theology of the cross through Christian history. Previous volumes have brought the story up through the Baroque era. This new book examines the reception of the message of the cross from the European Enlightenment to the turn of the twentieth century. The opening chapters set the stage in the transition from the Baroque to the Classical eras, describing the changing intellectual and cultural paradigms of the time. Viladesau examines the theology of the cross in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the aesthetic mediation of the cross in music and the visual arts. He shows how in the post-Enlightenment era the aesthetic treatment of the cross widely replaced the dogmatic treatment, and how this thought was translated into popular spirituality, piety, and devotion. The Folly of the Cross shows how classical theology responded to the critiques of modern science, history, Biblical scholarship, and philosophy, and how both classical and modern theology served as the occasions for new forms of representation of Christ's passion in the arts and music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Maternal Echoes' examines maternal imagery in the poetry of two French Romantic poets, the increasingly popular Desbordes-Valmore and the critically marginalized Lamartine. Drawing on psychoanalytic theories on the maternal voice as well as feminist criticism, the book argues that both poets find a voice of their own by echoing their mother's voice.

Book Synopsis The Collected Letters of Joseph Conrad by : Joseph Conrad
Download or read book The Collected Letters of Joseph Conrad written by Joseph Conrad and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1983-09 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the second of the projected eight-volume edition comprising all the surviving letters of Joseph Conrad. Once completed the edition will have assembled over 3,500 letters, one third of them as yet unpublished and many others only published before in inaccurate versions. The period covered by this volume, 1898-1902, was one of considerable achievement and anxiety for Conrad. The birth of his first child, the death of Stephen Crane, the murder of a friend's son, an encounter with an early X-ray machine, imperial wars in Cuba and South Africa - these events forced Conrad to face the problems of identity in terms of family, nation, history, and the cosmic order. This is also the period of 'Youth', 'Amy Foster', 'Typhoon', Lord Jim, and 'Heart of Darkness'. Often funny, always thoughtful, full of verbal energy even in the toils of severe depression, the letters in Volume Two present Conrad at a crucial though vulnerable moment of his life and literary career."--Publisher's description of v. 2
