Book Synopsis The Concept of Freedom in the Writings of St. Francis de Sales by : Eunan McDonnell
Download or read book The Concept of Freedom in the Writings of St. Francis de Sales written by Eunan McDonnell and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the examination of the concept of freedom in the writings of St Francis de Sales the author concludes that, in contradistinction to a contemporary understanding of freedom perceived as self-determination, a Salesian understanding privileges freedom's relationship to 'the good'. This situates St Francis de Sales in the classical Thomistic tradition of freedom's necessary relationship to the good, but involves a methodological shift as he employs the Renaissance starting point of 'the turn to the subject'. This study demonstrates how St Francis arrives inductively at what St Thomas demonstrated deductively, namely, the essential relationship of freedom to the good. Along with this Thomistic influence, the author analyses the Salesian indebtedness to Augustinian anthropology which explains the primacy St Francis gives to the will, and consequently, to love. Love, understood as the heart's movement towards the good, allows the Salesian approach to move beyond the confines of a traditional faculty psychology to embrace a more biblical understanding of the human person. This examination of love's relationship to freedom reveals their teleological and archaeological natures, coming back to our origins wherein we discover the source of our freedom bestowed on us as a gift from God.

This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distinguished diplomat Sir Ernest Satow's retirement began in 1906 and continued until his death in August 1929. From 1907 he settled in the small town of Ottery St. Mary in rural East Devon, England. He was very active, serving as a British delegate at the Second Hague Peace Conference in 1907 and on various committees related to church, missionary and other more local affairs: he was a magistrate and chairman of the Urban District Council. He had a very wide social circle of family, friends and former colleagues, with frequent distinguished visitors. He produced two seminal books: A Guide to Diplomatic Practice (1917, now in its seventh revised edition and referred to as 'Satow') and A Diplomat in Japan (1921). The latter is highly evaluated as a rare foreigner's view of the years leading to the Meiji Restoration of 1868. This book in two volumes is the last in a series of Satow's diaries edited by Ian Ruxton. This is the first-ever publication.

Download or read book Mysticism written by Evelyn Underhill and published by Image. This book was released on 1990-10-01 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1911, Mysticism remains the classic in its field and was lauded by The Princeton Theological Review as "brilliantly written [and] illuminated with numerous well-chosen extracts ... used with exquisite skill." Mysticism makes an in-depth and comprehensive exploration of its subject. Part One examines "The Mystic Fact," explaining the relation of mysticism to vitalism, to psychology, to theology, to symbolism, and to magic. Part Two, "The Mystic Way," explores the awakening, purification, and illumination of the self; discusses voices and visions; and delves into manifestatioins from ecstasty and rapture to the dark night of the soul. Rounding out the book are a useful Appendix, an exhaustive Bibliography, and an Index. Mysticism is thoroughly documented with material drawn from such great mystics as St. Teresa of Avila, Meister Eckhart, and St. John of the Cross, and this new Image Classic features a Foreword by Ira Progoff, translator of Cloud Unknowing and director of Dialogue House in New York City.
Book Synopsis The Complete Introduction to The Devout Life by : Francis de Sales
Download or read book The Complete Introduction to The Devout Life written by Francis de Sales and published by Paraclete Press. This book was released on 2019-06-07 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: De Sales’ classic has been described as “a masterpiece of psychology, practical morality, and common sense” and, after The Bible and The Imitation of Christ, is the widest read spiritual book of all time. Unlike many others, Devout Life was written specifically for lay persons and it demonstrates a rare sensitivity to the demands of life in a world that is often antagonistic to spirituality. In this first-of-its-kind edition, Fr. John-Julian offers a fresh translation, a most thorough historical introduction, and notes explaining points of language and theology along the way.

Book excerpt: In the wake of the French Revolution and other upheavals, Don Bosco (1815–1888) and other nineteenth-century founders and spiritual leaders contributed to the development of spiritual practices and perspectives on the Christian life that have been described as the “Salesian Pentecost.” Here are translations of and commentaries on the little-known spiritual writings of Don Bosco, his collaborators, and his contemporaries involved in the Salesian Pentecost. These diverse persons, fully engaged in apostolic ministry or occupied with the demands of ordinary life as lay women and men, were at the same time engaged in conscious spiritual practices that sought the interior exchange of the heart of Jesus for the human heart.

Download or read book Boundaries of Faith written by Jill R. Fehleison and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the political and religious crossroads where John Calvin and the Protestant Reformation had taken hold, the Catholic Diocese of Geneva struggled to convert their Protestant neighbors back to the Catholic Church while maintaining a tradition of piety and a firm disciplinary hand. This critical study examines the success of Catholic counter-reform in key rural villages and looks at the significant role played by Bishop François de Sales, who had the unusual challenge of dealing with the two political authorities of Savoy and France. Drawing from a wealth of primary sources, including visitation records of bishops and other diocesan documents, Jill Fehleison contributes to our understanding of early modern Catholicism as it addressed the challenges of coexisting with Protestantism.
