Book Synopsis Spanish Books in the Europe of the Enlightenment (Paris and London) by : Nicolás Bas Martín
Download or read book Spanish Books in the Europe of the Enlightenment (Paris and London) written by Nicolás Bas Martín and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Spanish Books in the Europe of the Enlightenment (Paris and London) Nicolás Bas examines the image of Spain in eighteenth-century Europe, and in Paris and London in particular. His material has been scoured from an exhaustive interrogation of the records of the book trade. He refers to booksellers’ catalogues, private collections, auctions, and other sources of information in order to reconstruct the country’s cultural image. Rarely have these sources been searched for Spanish books, and never have they been as exhaustively exploited as they are in Bas’ book. Both England and France were conversant with some very negative ideas about Spain. The Black Legend, dating back to the sixteenth century, condemned Spain as repressive and priest-ridden. Bas shows however, that an alternative, more sympathetic, vision ran parallel with these negative views. His bibliographical approach brings to light the Spanish books that were bought, sold and ultimately read. The impression thus obtained is likely to help us understand not only Spain’s past, but also something of its present.

Book Synopsis Secular Spirituality by : Lynn L. Sharp
Download or read book Secular Spirituality written by Lynn L. Sharp and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secular Spirituality challenges the traditional dichotomy between Enlightenment reason and religion. It follows French romantic socialists' and spiritists' search for a new spirituality based on reincarnation as a path to progress for individuals and society. Leaders like Allan Kardec argued for social reform; spiritist groups strove for equality; and women mediums challenged gender roles. Lynn L. Sharp looks closely at what it meant to practice spiritism, analyszing the movement's social and political critique and explaining the popularity of the new belief. She explores points of convergence and conflict in the interplay between spiritism and science, spiritism and psychology, and spiritism and the Catholic church to argue that the nineteenth century was not as 'disenchanted' as has been thought. Secular Spirituality successfully places spiritism within a larger cultural conversation, going beyond the leaders of the movement to look at the way spiritism functioned for its followers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Frederic Ozanam: Professor at the Sorbonne, His Life and Works A struggle is preparing, ' he says, 'between the classes, and it threatens to be terrible; let us precipitate ourselves between these hostile ranks so as to deaden the shock, if we cannot pre vent it.' In 1836 he wrote to his friend Lallier The question which agitates the world today, is not a question of political forms, but a social question; if it be the struggle Of those who have nothing, with those who have too much if it be the violent shock of Opulence and poverty which is making the ground tremble under our feet, our duty, as Christians, is to throw our selves between these irreconcilable enemies, and to induce one side to give, in order to fulfil the law, and the other to receive, as a benefit; to make one side cease to exact, and the other to refuse to render equality as general as it is possible amongst men to make voluntary community Of possession to replace tax ation and forced loans to make charity accomplish what justice and law alone can never do.' He adhered to this political creed all his life. Twelve years later, on the eve Of the 'violent shock' which his far-seeing sagacity foretold, he repeats, as in his stu dent days, It is a social question do away with misery, Chris tianize the people, and you will make an end Of revolutions. (pp. The first duty of Christians, now, is not to be frightened and the second is not to frighten others but, on the contrary, to reassure the timorous, and to make them understand that the present crisis is like a storm that cannot last. Book Synopsis The Fortunes of Montaigne by : Alan M. Boase
Download or read book The Fortunes of Montaigne written by Alan M. Boase and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-30 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Montaigne’s Essays were republished in France every two or three years from 1580–1669. The Fortunes of Montaigne (originally published in 1935) aims to show what those who bought these Essays during that period sought or found there. The author has attempted to answer three questions in the volume—what are the general ideas of those who are particularly drawn to Montaigne or who write against him?; what did these writers think of the Essays, and what specially interested them in the book?; and what did they borrow from him, or more profitably, what are their less conscious borrowings, their adaptations of his ideas? The book gives an account of the criticism and appreciation of the Essays. Further, it discusses the development of Humanism as opposed to orthodox Christianity, and the part played by the Essays in that development. This book will be of interest to students and researchers of philosophy, history, and literature.
Book Synopsis Time of Nature and the Nature of Time by : Christophe Bouton
Download or read book Time of Nature and the Nature of Time written by Christophe Bouton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses the question of time from the perspective of the time of nature. Its aim is to provide some insights about the nature of time on the basis of the different uses of the concept of time in natural sciences. Presenting a dialogue between philosophy and science, it features a collection of papers that investigate the representation, modeling and understanding of time as they appear in physics, biology, geology and paleontology. It asks questions such as: whether or not the notions of time in the various sciences are reducible to the same physical time, what status should be given to timescale differences, or what are the specific epistemic issues raised by past facts in natural sciences. The book first explores the experience of time and its relation to time in nature in a set of chapters that bring together what human experience and physics enable metaphysicians, logicians and scientists to say about time. Next, it studies time in physics, including some puzzling paradoxes about time raised by the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. The volume then goes on to examine the distinctive problems and conceptions of time in the life sciences. It explores the concept of deep time in paleontology and geology, time in the epistemology of evolutionary biology, and time in developmental biology. Each scientific discipline features a specific approach to time and uses distinctive methodologies for implementing time in its models. This volume seeks to define a common language to conceive of the distinct ways different scientific disciplines view time. In the process, it offers a new approach to the issue of time that will appeal to a wide range of readers: philosophers and historians of science, metaphysicians and natural scientists - be they scholars, advanced students or readers from an educated general audience.

Book Synopsis The Viking Discovery of America by : Helge Ingstad
Download or read book The Viking Discovery of America written by Helge Ingstad and published by Breakwater Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faced with harsh conditions in their Greenland home, a group of Vikings took the reins of fate into their own hands. With incredible luck, skill and fortitude, they discovered lands filled with a profusion of wood, wild game and fertile land. In the sagas that grew from this discovery, the lands were given names that resonated with hope and promise. Almost 1000 years later, a husband and wife team united their talents. Intrigued by allusions in the ancient sagas to fabled Vinland, they considered the scholarship on Viking culture and technology; they studied maps and they researched intensively the prominent theories on Vinland's location. And finally their efforts bore fruit when a remote Newfoundland peninsula yielded up a soapstone spindle-whorl, a Viking ring pin, and what had to be the overgrown remnants of over a dozen Viking buildings.
