Book Synopsis A Constellation of Authority by : Kyle C. Lincoln
Download or read book A Constellation of Authority written by Kyle C. Lincoln and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2023-03-15 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the long reign of Alfonso VIII, Castilian bishops were crusaders, castellans, cathedral canons, and collegiate officers, and they served as powerful intermediaries between the pope and the king of Castile. In A Constellation of Authority, Kyle C. Lincoln traces the careers of a septet of these bishops and uses this history to fill in much of what really happened in thirteenth-century Castile. The relationships that local prelates cultivated with Alfonso VIII and the Castilian royal family existed in tension with how they related to the reigning pope. Drawing on diocesan archives, monastic collections, and chronicles, Lincoln reconstructs the complex negotiations and navigations these bishops undertook to maintain the balance among the papal and royal agendas and their own interests. Lincoln examines the bishops' ties to crusades and political influence, the growth of canon and Roman law, religious and church reform, and the canonization of local leaders. In the process, he makes the case that the medieval past is best illuminated by the combined luminescence of a “constellation of authority” represented, at least in part, by a conglomerate of bishops. Through seven case studies, each examining a prelate in his individual historical context, A Constellation of Authority improves our understanding of the politics of thirteenth-century Castile and provides an important foundation for further consideration of the ties between Castile and the broader European medieval world. It will appeal to medieval Hispanists and historians of the medieval church and episcopacy.

Book Synopsis Warnings to the Kings and Advice on Restoring Spain by : María de Guevara
Download or read book Warnings to the Kings and Advice on Restoring Spain written by María de Guevara and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During a pivotal point in Spanish history, aristocrat María de Guevara (?–1683) produced two extraordinary essays that appealed for strong leadership, protested political corruption, and demanded the inclusion of women in the court’s decision making. “Treaty” gave Philip IV practical suggestions for fighting the war against Portugal and “Disenchantments” counseled the king-to-be, Charles II, on strategies to raise the country’s status in Europe. This annotated bilingual edition, featuring Nieves Romero-Díaz’s adroit translation, reproduces Guevara’s polemics for the first time. Guevara’s provocative writings call on Spanish women to bear the responsibility equally with men for restoring Spain’s power in Europe and elsewhere. The collection also includes examples of Guevara’s shorter writings that exemplify her ability to speak on matters of state, network with dignitaries, and govern family affairs. Witty, ironic, and rhetorically sophisticated, Guevara’s essays provide a fresh perspective on the possibilities for women in the public sphere in seventeenth-century Spain.

Book Synopsis God in La Mancha by : Sara Tilghman Nalle
Download or read book God in La Mancha written by Sara Tilghman Nalle and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Even as the Protestant Reformation became a permanent feature of European religious culture, a Catholic reformation was under way in Spain. Yet social historians of the Counter Reformation have written little about this movement, concentrating instead on those of Germany, France, and Italy. Sara Nalle explores this long-overlooked history in God in La Mancha, a case study of religious change in the Castilian diocese of Cuenca." "A prosperous, religiously conformist diocese located in the heart of Europe's most militantly Catholic monarchy, Cuenca had religious concerns that were typical of central Castilian - and even Italian - dioceses that were politically stable, religiously orthodox, and well-to-do. Throughout the sixteenth century, diocesan authorities, inquisitors, and local elites worked to retrain the clergy, catechize the laity, and enforce revitalized norms of Catholic belief and morality. Using the records of local religious courts, parishes, and notarial archives, Nalle shows in striking detail how the people and clergy of Cuenca learned to conform to the new standards of modern Catholicism." "God in La Mancha will be a key book in the study of the Counter Reformation's impact on popular behavior and belief. Its conclusions regarding the movement's success will stimulate further debate about the nature of religious reform in early modern Europe."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
