Book excerpt: The book introduces readers to literary links between this seventeenth-century prose of Sor María de Jesús de Agreda and other Spanish Baroque masterpieces. The author reexamines the original text and discovers significant dimensions regarding its historical, religious, and literary importance. His research of the novelesque form and "dialogical principles" operative in La mística ciudad de Dios provides convincing evidence of substantive prose literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sisters in Blue tells the story of two young women--one Spanish, one Puebloan--meeting across space and time. Sor María de Jesús de Ágreda, New Mexico's famous Lady in Blue, is said to have traveled to New Mexico in the seventeenth century. Here Anna M. Nogar and Enrique R. Lamadrid bring her to life, imagining an encounter between a Pueblo woman and Sor María during the nun's mystical spiritual journeys. Tales of Sor María, who described traveling across the earth and the heavens, have traditionally presented her as an evangelist who helped bring Catholicism to the Pueblos. Instead this book, which includes an essay providing historical context, shows a connection between Sor María and her friend Paf Sheuri. The two women find more similarities than differences in their shared experiences, and what they learn from each other has an impact for centuries to come.

Book excerpt: Exploring California as a theological place, this book renders critical engagement with significant Californian religious and theological phenomena and the inherent theological impulses within major Californian cultural icons. Harnessing conceptual tools inherent to theology, through theological reflection, assessment, and critique, the chapters in this volume begin to ascertain the significance of various empirical data and that no other qualitative methodological Californian study has done. Many universities are picking up on California literature as a theme that highlights a place of hope, wonder, and cultural innovation, but have neglected the significance of theological instincts flowing through the Californian dynamic. Californians Fred Sanders and Jason Sexton assemble leading voices and specialists both from within and without California for engagement with California’s influential culture: including leading theologians and cultural critics such as Richard J. Mouw, Paul Louis Metzger, and Fred Sanders, alongside leading specialists in Film studies and cultural critique, theological anthropology, missiology, sociology, and history.

Book excerpt: In spring 1996, Saint Joseph's University hosted the exhibition "The Holy Family as Prototype of the Civilization of Love: Images from the Viceregal Americas," which commemorated the 75th anniversary of the introduction of the Feast of the Holy Family to the liturgical calendar of the Universal Church. The exhibition displayed paintings from the Spanish Colonial period, rare books and engravings from seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Europe, and lithographs and devotional paintings on tin from nineteenth-century Mexico and New Mexico. Culled from private collections, galleries in Miami, New York, Washington D.C., and institutional collections of several Catholic universities, these art works offered a visual chronicle of the evolution of devotion to the Holy Family.
