However, it is of none of these that I am now going to tell you. The time of which I am writing was that when Arian persecutions were at an end, and the great Emperor Theodosius had given peace to the Church. Theophilus was now Patriarch of Alexandria. He was a man of great talent, of great influence, and of great learning. He was uncle to S. Cyril, who succeeded him; but I very much fear that, notwithstanding all the good things that may truly be said of him, his heart was not right towards God. Now, I will no longer talk to you myself, but will introduce you to my people, and let them tell their own story in their own way. Alexandria was then one of the most wonderful cities in the world; not only because of the countless vessels that rode at anchor in its harbour, but because of the enormous granaries, and warehouses, and stores, and markets, and shops of all kinds, that filled every street near the sea, and more especially that part called the Baucalis, where also stood the first Christian Church. The city was given up, to quote what S. John says, to "the merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble, and cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and,"--I too much fear it, --" bodies and souls of men." But now the markets were empty, the quays were deserted, --buyers and sellers were gone, -- nay, there was scarcely a boat in the harbour moving from ship to shore, or from shore to ship. From the heart of the city, however, a...

We began the series by the Preparation of Death, and we finish it by the Victories of the Martyrs, who are our principal models after Jesus and Mary, the King and the Queen Of martyrs. The other saints had only to follow them; it is thus that they have acquired the same glory. St. John beheld all the saints clothed in white, and with palms in their hands: Clot/zed wit/z w/zite robes, and palms in tkeir bands.1 The palm is the symbol of martyrs; and yet all the saints did not suffer martyrdom; - why, then. Book excerpt: The Bible uses the word Christian to describe followers of Jesus a grand total of three times. But there's another identifier that fills the pages of the New Testament--a word we've mistakenly reserved for the halo-wearing elite, losing something profound in the process. Saints. Wrapped in this ancient word is a divine invitation to discover who God created you to be and awaken to the life you were meant to know. Using Scripture and stories from his own experience, Addison Bevere makes a compelling case that the life you desire is found in the mystery of this sacred identity. If you want to exchange lifeless religion for the wonder of following Jesus, this book will spur you onward in your journey. ****** "In Saints: Becoming More Than 'Christians,' Addison will encourage you to stop fighting for victory and start living from the victorious destiny we already have through Jesus."--Christine Caine, bestselling author and founder of A21 and Propel Women "Saints is a clarion call to look past ourselves and to the only one who offers us the good life."--Kyle Idleman, senior pastor of Southeast Christian Church and author of Not a Fan and Don't Give Up "All I can say is 'Wow'! This 'Wow' speaks to the depth of knowledge, strength of wisdom, and keen insight found in Saints. It's obvious God has given Addison a voice, one that calls all generations to a higher level of living. As a father and fellow minister, I couldn't be prouder."--John Bevere, bestselling author and cofounder of Messenger International "While the word Christian seems to mean a lot of things to a lot of people, Saints calls us back to following our one and only, Jesus Christ."--Chris Hodges, senior pastor of Church of the Highlands and author of The Daniel Dilemma and What's Next? "Addison encourages us to put on our identity as a saint and live in a relationship with Jesus. Saints is an authentic look at what faith can be."--Bob Goff, New York Times bestselling author of Love Does and Everybody, Always "In a time when so many young men are deconstructing the sacred, Addison has leaned into it. I am challenged, corrected, and lifted by Saints."--Lisa Bevere, New York Times bestselling author and ridiculously proud mother "Addison Bevere has a unique voice in this generation. His new book is a force to be reckoned with in a world that misplaces its identity."--Heather Lindsey, author, speaker, and founder of Pinky Promise

Book excerpt: One of Publishers Weekly’s Best Books of the Year Winner of the Christopher Award Winner of the Catholic Press Association Book Award WITTY, WRYLY HONEST, AND ALWAYS ORIGINAL, My Life with the Saints is James Martin’s story of how his life has been shaped by some surprising friends—the saints of the Catholic Church. In his modern classic memoir, Martin introduces us to saints throughout history—from St. Peter to Dorothy Day, St. Francis of Assisi to Mother Teresa—and chronicles his lifelong friendships with them. Filled with fascinating tales, Martin’s funny, vibrant, and stirring book invites readers to discover how saints guide us throughout our earthly journeys and how they help each of us find holiness in our own lives. Featuring a new chapter from Martin, this tenth-anniversary edition of the best-selling memoir updates readers about his life over the past ten years. In that time, he has been a New York Times best-selling author, official chaplain of The Colbert Report, and a welcome presence in the media whenever there’s a breaking Catholic news story. But he has always remained recognizably himself. John L. Allen, Jr., the acclaimed Catholic journalist, contributes a foreword that shows how Martin has become one of the wisest and most insightful voices of this era. “An outstanding and often hilarious memoir.” —Publishers Weekly“One of the best spiritual memoirs in years.” —Robert Ellsberg“Remarkably engaging.” —U.S. Catholic“Martin’s final word is as Jungian as it is Catholic: God does not want us to be Mother Teresa or Dorothy Day. God wants us to be most fully ourselves.” —The Washington Post Book World

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studying the Lives of the Saints will help us imitate their virtues. Some may ask, why study the lives of the Martyrs? Their lives are extraordinary in that they suffered the cruelest of torments for the love of Jesus Christ, which we will not be called upon to suffer. There are many reasons to study the lives of the Saints. Saint Alphonsus tells us: “It maybe useful here to remark, with St. Augustine, that it is not the torture, but the cause, which makes the martyr. Whence St. Thomas teaches that martyrdom is to suffer death in the exercise of an act of virtue. From which we may infer, that not only he who by the hands of the executioner lays down his life for the faith, but whoever dies to comply with the divine will, and to please God, is a martyr, since in sacrificing himself to the divine love he performs and act of the most exalted virtue. We all have to pay the great debt of nature; let us therefore endeavor, in holy prayer, to obtain resignation to the divine will—to receive death and every tribulation in conformity with the dispensations of His Providence. As often as we shall perform this act of resignation with sufficient fervor, we may hope to be made partakers of the merits of the martyrs. St. Mary Magdalene, in reciting the doxology, always bowed her head in the same spirit she would have done in receiving the stroke of the executioner.”And there is a further reason to study the lives of the Martyrs. Martyrdom is not something that is offered to the mediocre, but to the fervent Christian. Some martyrs lived a century of holiness prior to consummating their martyrdom. Martyrdom is a straight ticket to heaven, but it is a ticket that is often earned by a pious life. True there are those very few, who convert and then are immediately martyred. But many more lived a fervent Christian life, which was crowned with the grace of martyrdom. Althoguh we may not give our lives in the manner they did at the end, we can give our lives in the manner they gave their lives before called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Book excerpt: This volume is a compilation of inspirational stories shared by Latter-day Saints who served on the front lines in our most recent military conflicts. These stories detail their trials, challenges, setbacks, faith, courage, and their numerous victories overcoming extraordinary circumstances. This book is filled with remarkable first-person accounts from Latter-day Saint soldiers, sailors, Marines, airmen, airwomen, and civilians who served in the Gulf War, the Afghanistan War, and the war in Iraq. Their amazing stories-published together for the first time-chronicle the sacrifice, dedication, and humor of day-to-day life in modern combat zones. This book also shares the story of how fully functioning districts of the Church were organized and operated in the war-torn countries of Afghanistan and Iraq to meet the spiritual needs of the Church members there. Richly illustrated with photographs from the participants, this book will introduce you to a new generation of Latter-day Saint heroes.

Book excerpt: Volume 09 of 22 in the Aesthetical Works of St. Alphonsus de Ligouri, first published in 1843. Alphonsus Maria de Liguori was an Italian Catholic bishop, spiritual writer, scholastic philosopher and theologian, and founder of the Redemptorists, an influential religious congregation. He was canonized in 1839 and proclaimed a Doctor of the Church in 1871.In this ninth volume of his "Aesthetical Works", Ligouri reminds the reader that "The most important lesson which we learn from the martyrs is the necessity of the love of God: He who loveth not abideth in deathl." Ligouri details the accounts of many holy men and women, not just saints, but martyrs, those blessed by God to receive the crown of martyrdom and a Baptism of Blood. The saint writes many of these accounts to recommend the reader to imitate their love and devotion. This work is ideal for study and meditation.Reproduced from older English edition, this 2013 edition has been faithfully edited to continue the proliferation of a great spiritual work.

Book excerpt: Saints both young and bold, The tales of these saints are told here, along with those of many others who, although young, have joined the ranks of the greatest saints: some by dying for their faith, many more by living for it. Their lives of great and simple virtue remind us that "valor does not wait on years," nor does holiness. To live in the love of God, in absolute obedience to His commandments, to practice the noblest Christian virtues, and even to offer our life in sacrifice - we don't have to be grown up.
