Book excerpt: Victor tells the unique story of a historic community in the Finger Lakes region, just south of Rochester. It chronicles Victor's past as a Seneca Indian capital to the coming of Massachusetts settlers in the 18th century through to life as it was in the 20th century. With over 200 photographs, this book shows how people in rural upstate New York lived, played, studied, worked, and worshiped. The images are from the town and village archives, the Victor Historical Society, the Ontario County Historical Society, and private collections. Many are previously unpublished photographs, and several are by Fred Locke, an amateur photographer who is considered to be "the father of porcelain insulators."

Book excerpt: Fans of The Cross and the Switchblade will love Victor. It is the true story of Victor Torres, who moved with his family from their native Puerto Rico to Brooklyn, New York, in search of a better life. Their American dream, however, quickly faded into a nightmare when young Victor was introduced to gang life on the New York streets. Within a few years, teenage Victor had set up a lucrative drug-trafficking business in an attempt to help his financially struggling family. But Victor quickly became enslaved by his own drug addiction, as his parents, Manuel and Lila, desperately searched to find a way to help their son. Through the persistent prayers of Victor’s mother and the ministry of David Wilkerson, Victor’s parents realized that a faith-based rehabilitation program was their last chance to rescue their son. After a series of personal tragedies, Victor experienced a life-altering encounter with the Lord that changed everything. In this companion book to the award-winning movie of the same name, Victor Torres himself takes you through his journey, from tragedy to triumph, a living example of the power of redemptive freedom found only in Christ.

This is a place of lazy summer holidays, rides on the horse-drawn tram, strolls around Granite Island with an ice cream, fish and chips on the lawn, a cosy winter weekend - a happy place to slow down and relax with loved ones. In this beautiful book, you'll find all this and more as stories from history, newspapers, interviews and oral histories, along with hundreds of images, bring to life the people and places that make Victor Harbor a coveted destination and place to live. You'll meet a host of remarkable people, from the Ramindjeri with their deep spiritual and cultural connection to the land and sea, to the European settlers and the profound change they brought about. Essential to Victor's story are the rough and ready whalers and fishers who once braved the seas of the rugged South Coast. So, too, those involved in community organisations, tourism, agriculture, conservation, business, sport and the arts - trailblazers and local legends pivotal to the social fabric of the town. Victor Harbor: Down beside the sea is the fascinating story of how Victor Harbor came to be, told by the people who live and work in this breathtakingly beautiful coastal locale. Whether you reconnect with Victor Harbor in your armchair or decide to travel from afar to discover the place for yourself, you'll find there's plenty going on 'down beside the sea'.

Book excerpt: 'To the English, I am "shocking"...What's more, French, which is disgusting; republican, which is abominable; exiled, which is repulsive; defeated, which is infamous. To top it all off, a poet...' Victor Hugo dominated literary life in France for over half a century, pouring forth novels, poems, plays, and other writings with unflagging zest and vitality. Here, for the first time in English, all aspects of his work are represented within a single volume. Famous scenes from the novels Notre-Dame, Les Misérables, and The Toilers of the Sea are included, as well as excerpts from his intimate diaries, poems of love and loss, and scathing denunciations of the political establishment. All the chosen passages are self-contained and can be enjoyed without any previous knowledge of Hugo's work. Much of the material is appearing in English for the first time, and most of it has never before been annotated thoroughly in any language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From his premature death in 1919 until the final decades of the twentieth century, the French traveller, author, and naval doctor Victor Segalen remained relatively obscure, his extensive work on exoticism largely unavailable. With the appearance of the Complete Works in 1995, the dramatic scope and wide-ranging implications of his reflections on diversity were at last fully apparent. Segalen's understanding of the exotic is radically different from that of his colonial contemporaries. His exoticism - or Aesthetics of Diversity - focuses on the instability of contact between different cultures and represents a unique response to the decline of diversity triggered by colonialism and Westernization. Recent attention to Segalen in a variety of fields - post-modern sociology, post-colonialism, literary criticism, anthropology - indicates his role as a precursory theorist of the exotic whose work is of increasing contemporary relevance. At a moment when exoticism is rapidly emerging as a term of critical currency, this study of the genesis of Segalen's aesthetics is a timely contribution to work in this area.

His college years and adventures as a tank platoon leader in the U.S. Army as well as a test pilot and a combat pilot in Vietnam round out this interesting account of The Adventures of Young Victor Huber.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In-depth analysis of Victor Burgin’s video installation Parzival (2013) In commemoration of the destruction of the University Library of Leuven (Belgium) in August 1914, the projection work Parzival, created by Victor Burgin (°UK, 1941) in 2013, was installed within the rebuilt Library. The installation uniquely marked the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I, which left its profound traces on both the consciousness and physiognomy of the city of Leuven. Burgin’s reflection on Richard Wagner’s opera Parsifal (premiere 1882) combines the artist’s computer modelled images (a bombed out street, a sunset meadow, a Venetian palazzo, …) with citations from Roberto Rossellini’s Germany Year Zero (1948) and references to works by Milan Kundera, W.G. Sebald and Philip K. Dick. This publication provides an in-depth analysis of Parzival, a work that is inspired by the period of seven months that Wagner spent in Venice (1858-1859). Burgin’s Parzival raises questions about some of the most fundamental elements in Wagner’s operatic work: the longing for a savior, the complex connection between violence and catharsis, and the presentiment that destruction awaits humanity in the future (Götterdämmerung). In an associative manner, Parzival brings together various artistic and political features to confront the romantic ideal of the ruin with the horrors that might result from such a myth. In addition, this book contains a reprint of Michel Foucault’s essay “The Imagination of the Nineteenth Century” (1980). GPRC label:
