Book excerpt: The use of cold-formed steel as a framework for floor systems in multi-story buildings and single occupancy residences is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to traditional materials and techniques. Builders and designers have recognized that the high strength-to-weight ratio provided by the cross-section of cold-formed steel members permits lighter structures and longer spans. The longer spans and lighter structures associated with cold-formed steel floor systems can result in vibration serviceability issues if proper design considerations are not made. Providing sufficient damping within the structure is the most effective way to ensure that occupants are comfortable under typical residential and office service loads. The modern, open-concept interior has open floor plans with few partitions and long spans, which result in inherently low structural damping. Cold-formed steel floor systems also have less mass than traditional floor systems, which will increase the amplitude of acceleration response. The vibration problems that may be present in cold-formed steel floor systems, like any other floor system, can be addressed if proper consideration is given by designers. Traditional design approaches for vibration serviceability have proven inadequate, and there are no current methods available to designers for calculating the response of cold-formed steel floor systems. In order to design a floor system to properly address occupant comfort, consideration must be given for the type of dynamic loading, resonance, dynamic response, and stiffness of the floor system. The objective of this thesis is to improve the understanding of the dynamic characteristics of cold-formed steel floor systems, and recommend an adequate model for predicting the dynamic response and modal properties of floor systems, in order to aid the design process. This thesis presents the results of an extensive laboratory and field study on the vibration of cold-formed steel floor systems. Floor systems built with cold-formed steel TreadyReady® joists and subfloor assemblies containing OSB, FORTACRETE®, sound reduction board, cold-formed steel deck, and LEVELROCK® topping were examined. Previous research has presented the observed influence of construction details on the modal properties of the laboratory floor systems tested. This thesis discusses the influence of different details on the transverse stiffness of the floor systems. It was found that effectively restrained strongbacks, and cold-formed steel deck subfloor assemblies provided significant increases in transverse stiffness. Based on the analysis of the field testing data, recommended design damping ratios are provided for floor systems constructed with the materials investigated in this study. Floor response that can be compared to serviceability criteria is presented. The peak RMS acceleration from walking excitation was found to be within the acceptable range for the ISO criterion based on residential occupancy, and the static deflection from a 1 kN point load was found to be within the acceptable range of Onysko's criterion. An adequate design criterion for vibration requires a limiting value, and a means of estimating floor response for comparison. The AISC, ATC, and Smith, Chui, and Hu Orthotropic Plate design methods were evaluated by comparing predicted frequency against measured frequency for the test floors. The ATC and Smith, Chui, and Hu Orthotropic Plate methods were evaluated by comparing predicted deflection against measured deflection for the test floors. The ATC method is recommended as the best method for calculating floor response based on current publications. A design procedure is recommended for cold-formed steel floor systems, using the ATC design guide. The ATC acceleration criterion for walking excitation must be met for floors with fundamental frequencies of less than 15 Hz, and the ATC static deflection criterion must be met for all floors. Proposed modifications to the ATC method to improve the design of cold-formed steel floors include: adopting the recommended design damping ratios from this thesis; adopting the frequency-weighted ISO limiting acceleration and, obtaining several coefficients and empirical expressions that are relevant to cold-formed steel floors from further testing. Recommendations for improving the floor testing procedures at the University of Waterloo are given.

Book excerpt: Excessive vibration in response to human activities has been a significant problem associated with lightweight steel floor systems, especially cold-formed steel (CFS) floors. Methods for accurately predicting these vibrations and evaluating floor systems are not readily available to the design community. The limited amount and complexity of research on the vibration serviceability of lightweight steel floor systems have shown an urgent need for further investigation. The objective of this research is to evaluate how human walking affects the performance of lightweight steel floor systems. Four important aspects that influence floor vibration performance are investigated: rotationally restrained floor joist ends, structural properties of CFS floors, human-structure interactions, and the applicable design guidelines. The investigation was carried out using an analytical approach in which CFS floor systems are modelled by equivalent orthotropic plates, and the equivalent structural properties are determined by using the Rayleigh method. The method of finite integral transform is extended to obtain the exact series solutions of the bending and vibration of orthotropic plates with rotationally restrained edges. The analytical/numerical results are compared to the results obtained in previous methods and experimental investigations. Then, the significant effects of human occupants on the dynamic properties and responses of lightweight steel floors are examined through the proposed damped plate-oscillator model, which determines frequencies and damping ratios through analytical analysis of coupled floor-occupant systems. The predicted results are compared with previous test results. Three loading models--moving force, moving damped-oscillator, and moving and stationary damped-oscillators are subsequently proposed to obtain the dynamic responses of floor systems to human walking. The analytical results from the three models are compared with the previous test results. After that, parametric studies are conducted on the effects of step frequency, damping ratio, human-to-structure mass ratio, and walking path. The foregoing investigations provide a comprehensive understanding of the dynamic performance of lightweight steel floors affected by human walking. Finally, design guidelines are developed for lightweight CFS steel floors in residential constructions. The floors are classified into three categories based on their fundamental frequencies, i.e. low-, mid-, and high-frequency floors. For each category, the corresponding design criterion and method are proposed. It is the author's desire that the contributions made in this thesis research help engineering practitioners better understand the dynamic responses and vibrational characteristics of lightweight CFS floor systems, particularly on human-structure interactions and ultimately lead to the efficient design of lightweight CFS floor systems that resisting the vibration induced by human walking.

Further there is little information to evaluate long span slab structures that have the potential for a dominant slab mode.Using the examples presented in Design Guide 11 as a base for the investigation, finite element modeling guidelines were created that can be used to yield an output that agrees with the Design Guide 11 solutions. These same finite element modeling guidelines were applied to a real steel framed structure with in-situ test data available. The structure investigated as part of this thesis utilizes a long span composite slab system. From the modeling output achieved fromthe finite element investigation of this structure, confidence in the modeling guidelines is furtherstrengthened. The results of this thesis could prove helpful and instructive for practicing engineers in the prevention of unwanted serviceability vibration issues for this type of structural system using both computer software and manual calculations.

Book excerpt: The presented research examined three areas: best practices in high quality dynamic testing of in-situ floor systems, extensive dynamic testing of three bare (non-fit out) in-situ multi-bay steel composite floors to estimate their dynamic parameters/response and to identify trends in dynamic behavior, and development of a set of fundamental finite element (FE) modeling techniques to adequately represent the dynamic response of steel composite floors for the purpose of evaluating vibration serviceability. The measurement, analysis, and computation of a floor's accelerance frequency response function (FRF) is the core premise linking all areas of the presented research. The burst chirp signal using an electrodynamic shaker is recommended as the most accurate and consistent source of excitation for acquiring high quality measurements suitable for use in parameter estimation, operating deflection shape animation, and calibration/validation of FE models. A reduced mid-bay testing scheme is recommended as a time-saving alternative to modal testing over a full coverage area, provided the only desired estimated parameters are frequencies, damping, and mid-bay acceleration response. Accelerance FRFs were measured with an electrodynamic shaker located within 23 unique bays on the three tested floors. Dominant frequencies ranged from 4.85 Hz to 9 Hz and measured estimates of damping varied considerably, ranging from 0.44% to 2.4% of critical (0.5%-1.15% was typical). Testing showed several mode shapes were localized to just a few bays and not all modes were adequately excited by forcing at a single location. The quality of the estimated mode shapes was significantly improved using multi-reference modal testing. FE models for the tested floors were developed based on high quality measured data and were shown to provide adequate representations of measured floor behavior.

Refined methods in structural analysis and design, and improved materials and construction techniques, have led to the use of materials with high strength-to-weight ratios. These effects have resulted in decreased structural mass. Coincidently, offices are becoming more paperless using lighter office furniture and partitions that are also lighter with less damping - all of which can lead to floors that are susceptible to transient vibrations induced by footfall from normal walking. The research objective is to develop a rigorous modeling approach to determine the dynamic response of the floor, to incorporate time histories based on footfall at various locations within a floor, and its response to footfall-induced load. Three-dimension model software SAP 2000 was used to model floor system. AISC Design Guide No. 11 provides guidance for simplified procedures; however, such procedures might be enhanced with a more refined and rigorous model for the structural system and the loads. Also, architectural requirements for many floor systems fall well beyond the typical assumptions in Design Guide No. 11 where no practical modeling guidelines exist. Finally, some floor system design requirements are extremely demanding for vibration limits, e.g., medical facilities and manufacturing plant, etc. Better methods are needed. Previous field tests are combined with new measurement of a building under construction on the UW campus Business Building to confirm the modeling approach. The outcome is to develop a well-defined approach to modeling footfall load using contemporary structural modeling methods. The approach will benefit building designers helping to avoid service problems in general structures and meet extreme limits in more demanding applications.

Dynamic impact and static loading tests were performed on twelve full size laboratory floors and five two-joist line laboratory floors to determine the influencing characteristics of annoying vibrations in metal framed floors. Similar tests were conducted on eleven floors located in existing houses. Subjective evaluation, in terms of annoying vibration levels, of all floors was recorded. Four existing floor vibration criteria were investigated: 1) Australian Standard. Domestic Metal Framing Code, 2) Swedish Building Technology Design Guide developed by Professor Sven Ohlsson, 3) United States Proposed Timber Floor Vibration Criterion developed by James Johnson, and 4) Canadian Timber Floor Criterion developed by Donald Onysko. Data collected from testing was used to determine which of the four existing criteria best classified the perceived vibration level of the floors. One criterion is suggested as the most suitable for predicting the perceived vibration level of metal framed residential floors. Three methods to predict the vertical deflection of a floor subject to a concentrated load at mid-bay were examined. The results of applying these methods to the laboratory floors were compared to the actual measured values. The method which correlated the best with the measured values was selected for use in the proposed criterion.

The aim of this book is to provide structural and civil engineers working in construction and environmental engineering with practical guidelines for counteracting vibration problems. Dynamic actions are considered from the following sources of vibration: - human body motions, - rotating, oscillating and impacting machines, - wind flow, - road traffic, railway traffic and construction work. The main section of the book presents tools that aid in decision-making and in deriving simple solutions to cases of frequently occurring "normal" vibration problems.
