Book Synopsis Postmodernism of Resistance in Roberto Bolaño’s Fiction and Poetry by : J. Agustín Pastén B.
Download or read book Postmodernism of Resistance in Roberto Bolaño’s Fiction and Poetry written by J. Agustín Pastén B. and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2020-12-01 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Postmodernism of Resistance in Roberto Bolaño’s Fiction and Poetry examines the ways in which Bolaño employs a type of literary aesthetics that subverts traits traditionally associated with postmodernism. Pastén B. coins these aesthetics “postmodernism of resistance” and argues that this resistance stands in direct opposition to critical discourses that construe the presence of hopeless characters and marginal settings in Bolaño’s works as signs of the writer’s disillusionment with the political as a consequence of the defeat of the Left in Latin America. Rather, he contends, Bolaño creates a fictional world comprised of characters and situations that paradoxically refuse to accept defeat—even while displaying the scars of terrible historical events. In this work Pastén B. challenges some critical assumptions about Bolaño’s fiction and poetry that led to decontextualized interpretations of his work and offers a singularly comprehensive investigation that synthesizes multiple perspectives of a complicated author into one text.
Book Synopsis Tartessos and the Phoenicians in Iberia by : Sebastián Celestino
Download or read book Tartessos and the Phoenicians in Iberia written by Sebastián Celestino and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book in English about the earliest historical civilization in the western Mediterranean, known as "Tartessos." Endowed with extraordinary wealth in metals and strategically positioned between the Atlantic and Mediterranean trading routes at the time of Greek and Phoenician colonial expansion, Tartessos flourished in the eight-seventh centuries BCE. Tartessos became a literate, sophisticated, urban culture in southwestern Iberia (today's Spain and Portugal), enriched by commercial contacts with the Aegean and the Levant since at least the ninth century. In its material culture (architecture, grave goods, sanctuaries, plastic arts), we see how native elements combined with imported "orientalizing" innovations introduced by the Phoenicians. Historians of the rank of Herodotos and Livy, geographers such as Strabo and Pliny, Greek and Punic periploi and perhaps even Phoenician and Hebrew texts, testify to the power, wealth, and prominence of this westernmost Mediterranean civilization. Archaeologists, in turn, have demonstrated the existence of a fascinating complex society with both strong local roots and international flare. Yet for still-mysterious reasons, Tartessos did not attain a "Classical" period like its peer emerging cultures did at the same time (Etruscans, Romans, Greeks). This book combines the expertise of its two authors in archaeology, philology, and cultural history to present a comprehensive, coherent, theoretically up-to-date, and informative overview of the discovery, sources, and debates surrounding this puzzling culture of ancient Iberia and its complex hybrid identity vis-à-vis the western Phoenicians. This book will be of great interest to students of the classics, archaeology and ancient history, Phoenician-Punic studies, colonization and cultural contact.
Book Synopsis Historical Earthquakes, Tsunamis and Archaeology in the Iberian Peninsula by : Manuel Álvarez-Martí-Aguilar
Download or read book Historical Earthquakes, Tsunamis and Archaeology in the Iberian Peninsula written by Manuel Álvarez-Martí-Aguilar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-22 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on historical earthquakes and tsunamis in the Iberian Peninsula has made great strides in recent years, from diverse scientific fields ranging from geology to archaeology. In addition to the famous earthquake and tsunami of 1755, which intensely affected the peninsula, researchers are conducting a growing number of surveys and case studies on seismic episodes and extreme wave events of possible tsunamigenic origin in Portugal and Spain during the ancient, medieval, and modern eras. However, the development of these studies has suffered due to a certain lack of communication among the different fields of research, which are focused on their own methodologies and interests. The aim of this book is to promote interdisciplinary dialogue by linking the results of the most recent research into historical earthquakes and tsunamis in Iberia from the fields of geology, history and archaeology. The volume, which devotes special attention to tsunamis and to events that occurred in the Iberian Peninsula before 1755, offers synthetic insights, updates, and case studies of maximum interest for knowledge of the historical seismology of Portugal and Spain.

Book excerpt: ON Friday 27th June 1975 a young Venezuelan burst from a Paris apartment straight into the world's headlines. He left for dead four men. He had previously blithely lobbed a grenade into a crowded cafe, attempted to assassinate the president of the Zionist Federation of Great Britain, seized the French Embassy in Holland and launched two rocket attacks on planes at Orly airport. His crimes were apparently endless. He went on the kidnap the OPEC ministers in Vienna. He is known to the world as Carlos. The press dubbed him the Jackal. Security forces consider him The World's Most Wanted Man. Favid Yallop tracked Carlos down to a small village in the Bekaa Valley outside war-torn Beirut. Through two long nights he listened to part of Carlos's story. Then, under tragic circumstances, the trail went dead. For the next seven years, Yallop tried t rediscover Carlos the Jackal, but what began as a manhunt became a journey into a frightening world of terrorism, espionage and Middle Eastern politics. Drawing on the investigative skills that made In God's Name an international bestseller, written with clarity, passion and humanity, To the Ends of the Earth is a monumental and riveting book, a pursuit of truth that is destined to become a classic.

Book Synopsis A New Companion to Hispanic Mysticism by : Hilaire Kallendorf
Download or read book A New Companion to Hispanic Mysticism written by Hilaire Kallendorf and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The canon of Hispanic mysticism is expanding. No longer is our picture of this special brand of early modern devotional practice limited to a handful of venerable saints. Instead, we recognize a wide range of marginal figures as practitioners of mysticism, broadly defined. Neither do we limit the study of mysticism necessarily to the Christian religion, nor even to the realm of literature. Representations of mysticism are also found in the visual, plastic and musical arts. The terminology and theoretical framework of mysticism permeate early modern Hispanic cultures. Paradoxically, by taking a more inclusive approach to studying mysticism in its marginal manifestations, we draw mysticism---in all its complex iterations---back toward its rightful place at the center of early modern spiritual experience. Book Synopsis Muslims of Spain by : Emir Cruz Fernández
Download or read book Muslims of Spain written by Emir Cruz Fernández and published by Al-Hikmah Tutoring Services, LLC. This book was released on with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For every romantic retelling, there is a much more complex reality... If you have always been captivated by the Spanish Golden Age, you may be familiar with Maurofilia literature – a fictitious, stylized, and romantic portrayal of the Moorish people and culture written from a Catholic perspective. Far less well-known is Aljamiado literature… another genre that sprang up during the Spanish Golden Age, which pairs beautifully with Maurofilia literature and affords us a deeper understanding of what was happening at the time. While Maurofilia literature romanticizes the experience of the Moors, Aljamiado literature focuses on the much more difficult reality of the Moorish experience in an intolerant and restrictive Catholic society. This gritty, realism-focused genre was vital to the Moorish community at the time. It demonstrates their resilience as they fought to preserve their religious, social, and cultural identity in a predominantly Catholic society. You now have a unique opportunity to see past the romanticized depiction of the Moorish people in Maurofilia literature and glimpse how those people viewed themselves. Through his thorough and focused research, Professor Emir Cruz Fernández will give you a panoramic view of the Muslim experience during the Spanish Golden Age. Inside this fascinating and insightful work, you will discover: ● A background to Aljamiado studies (so you have a complete understanding of how the texts emerged) ● The key characteristics of Aljamiado literature – and how it gives us a deeper insight into the reality of the time ● Significant insight is taken from scholars of Islam ● A fuller understanding of one of the most reproduced and widely read works by Spanish crypto- Muslims of the 16th century ● The role of The Mi'rāj in Muslim tradition ● How Aljamiado literature shines a light on a broader picture of the human experience ● Insightful analysis and translation of significant parts of crucial texts in Aljamiado literature And much more. There is always another layer… And you are about to uncover a genuinely fascinating one. Deepen your understanding of literature during the Golden Age of Spain.
