Book excerpt: Linear collider (LC) interaction region beam sizes and component position stability requirements are expected to be a few nanometers[1]. It is important to show that the related tolerances can be achieved, with an electron beam if possible. Using recently developed component stabilization technology, very high-resolution beam position monitors (BPM's), and the ultra-low emittance beam at the KEK ATF, we plan to demonstrate the required stabilization. Our first step is to develop high-resolution RF cavity beam position monitors, using either C or X band frequencies. A C-band cavity BPM with a resolution of 25 nm has been reported in tests at FFTB [2]. By correcting for the effects of non-axial trajectories and using both position and angle BPM movers, we expect to be able to demonstrate a resolution of 2 to 3 nm over a dynamic range of ± 20 [mu]m. We report on the progress of the tests here.

We have developed a high resolution cavity BPM and associated electronics. A triplet comprised of these BPMs was installed in the extraction line of the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) for testing with its ultra-low emittance beam. The three BPMs were each rigidly mounted inside an alignment frame on six variable-length struts which could be used to move the BPMs in position and angle. We have developed novel methods for extracting the position and tilt information from the BPM signals including a robust calibration algorithm which is immune to beam jitter. To date, we have demonstrated a position resolution of 15.6 nm and a tilt resolution of 2.1 [mu]rad over a dynamic range of approximately ± 20 [mu]m.

It is important to the ILC design effort to demonstrate that these tolerances can be achieved - ideally using beam-based stability measurements. It has been estimated that RF cavity beam position monitors (BPMs) could provide position measurement resolutions of less than one nanometer and could form the basis of the desired beam-based stability measurement. We have developed a high resolution RF cavity BPM system. A triplet of these BPMs has been installed in the extraction line of the KEK Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) for testing with its ultra-low emittance beam. A metrology system for the three BPMs was recently installed. This system employed optical encoders to measure each BPM's position and orientation relative to a zero-coefficient of thermal expansion carbon fiber frame and has demonstrated that the three BPMs behave as a rigid-body to less than 5 nm. To date, we have demonstrated a BPM resolution of less than 20 nm over a dynamic range of +/- 20 microns.

The scheme utilizes the H-plane of the waveguide to couple magnetically to the side of the cavity, which results in a selective coupling to the dipole mode and a total rejection of the monopole mode. This scheme greatly simplifies the BPM geometry and relaxes machining tolerances. We will present detailed numerical studies on such a cavity BPM, analyze its resolution limit and tolerance requirements for a nanometer resolution. Finally present the measurement results of a X-band prototype.

Book excerpt: The main physics program of the International Linear Collider (ILC) requires a measurement of the beam energy at the interaction point with an accuracy of 10−4 or better. To achieve this goal a magnetic spectrometer using high resolution beam position monitors (BPMs) has been proposed. This paper reports on the cavity BPM system that was deployed to test this proposal. We demonstrate sub-micron resolution and micron level stability over 20 hours for a 1 m long BPM triplet. We find micron-level stability over 1 hour for 3 BPM stations distributed over a 30 m long baseline. The understanding of the behavior and response of the BPMs gained from this work has allowed full spectrometer tests to be carried out.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sub-picosecond Accelerator at Los Alamos National Laboratory is a 1,300 MHz, 8 MeV photoinjector. Its beam can be bunched to sub-picosecond lengths using a magnetic chicane. To observe this, the author uses an rf cavity operating in a TM110 mode to generate a transverse magnetic dipole field that streaks each bunch as it passes. Inserting a screen downstream, he determines the pulse length by measuring the increase in the beam spot width. To achieve sufficient resolution two things must happen: first, the unstreaked beam must be well focused at the screen, and, second, the drift after the cavity must be long enough. At high charge and short pulse lengths, these goals become mutually exclusive. To eliminate this problem, the author proposes using a beam position monitor instead of a screen. The second moment of the beam position monitor signals determines the difference between the x and y rms widths of the beam. With a properly orientated cavity, the resulting change in this quantity also gives the pulse length. However, the BPM does not require a well focused beam at its position, eliminating that constraint on resolution.
