Book excerpt: In this comprehensive study of Thomas Kinsella's poetry, Brian John explores the poet's development within both the Irish and the English contexts and defines the nature of his poetic achievement. He also offers a new reading of Kinsella's evolving relationship to one of his major literary forebears, W. B. Yeats. What becomes clear is the formidable accomplishment of a poet, now writing at the height of his powers, whose substantial body of work warrants comparison with the grand masters of twentieth-century literature in English - with Yeats, Joyce, and Beckett.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1947, The Vertical Man explores a form of Indian sculpture largely ignored in other studies, with a focus on two kinds of sculpture from the province of Bihar. The book provides detailed analysis of the formal characteristics of the sculpture and the influences of the myth, ritual, and context in which they were commissioned and made. It explains why the sculpture is regional and "why the styles are what they are". It is an original study which throws light on important subjects such as the relations of art and religion and of art and economics. The Vertical Man will appeal to those with an interest in art, specifically sculpture and the art of the Indian countryside.

Book excerpt: From the invention of skyscrapers and airplanes to the development of the nuclear bomb, ideas about the modern increasingly revolved around vertiginous images of elevation and decline and new technologies of mobility and terror from above. In The Vertical Imagination and the Crisis of Transatlantic Modernism, Paul Haacke examines this turn by focusing on discourses of aspiration, catastrophe, and power in major works of European and American literature as well as film, architecture, and intellectual and cultural history. This wide-ranging and pointed study begins with canonical fiction by Franz Kafka, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, and John Dos Passos, as well as poetry by Guillaume Apollinaire, Hart Crane, and Aimé Césaire, before moving to critical reflections on the rise of New York City by architects and writers from Le Corbusier to Simone de Beauvoir, the films of Alfred Hitchcock and theories of cinematic space and time, and postwar novels by Kurt Vonnegut, Thomas Pynchon, and Leslie Marmon Silko, among many other examples. In tracing the rise and fall of modernist discourse over the course of the long twentieth century, this book shows how visions of vertical ascension turned from established ideas about nature, the body, and religion to growing anxieties about aesthetic distinction, technological advancement, and American capitalism and empire. It argues that spectacles of height and flight became symbols and icons of ambition as well as direct indexes of power, and thus that the vertical transformation of modernity was both material and imagined, taking place at the same time through the rapidly expanding built environment and shifting ideological constructions of "high" and "low."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph explores the grammar of modifier PPs in Japanese, concentrating on their word order. The study argues that (i) modifier PPs are hierarchically arranged and (ii) there is an interesting fine-grained correlation between different PP types and Modal/Aspect functors which indicates that Temporal and Locative appear relatively freely with respect to a certain range of the Modal/Aspect functors in the middle field, whereas the rest of the PP types are more constrained in this respect. Unlike cartographic approaches to PPs (Schweikert 2005, Cinque 2006), the book adopts the working hypothesis that the fine-grained hierarchies can be derived in a constrained manner along the lines of Svenonius and Ramchand (2014) and proposes that the properties of the PPs characterized by (i) and (ii) can be captured in a sortal domain analysis. The book appeals to a linguistic audience interested in modifier syntax as well as in Japanese.

Book excerpt: (Book). Ringo: With a Little Help is the first in-depth biography of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, who kept the beat for an entire generation and who remains a rock icon over fifty years since the Beatles took the world by storm. With a Little Help traces the entire arc of Ringo's remarkable life and career, from his sickly childhood to his life as The World's Most Famous drummer to his triumphs, addictions, and emotional battles following the breakup of the Beatles as he comes to terms with his legacy. Born in 1940 as Richard Starkey in the Dingle, one of Liverpool's most gritty, rough-and-tumble neighborhoods, he rose from a hardscrabble childhood marked by serious illnesses, long hospital stays, and little schooling to emerge, against all odds, as a locally renowned drummer. Taking the stage name Ringo Starr, his big break with the Beatles rocketed him to the pinnacle of worldwide acclaim in a remarkably short time. He was the last member of the Beatles to join the group but also the most vulnerable, and his post-Beatles career was marked by chart-topping successes, a jet-setting life of excess and alcohol abuse, and, ultimately, his rebirth as one of rock's revered elder statesman.

Book excerpt: "Discovering Gurdjieff is more than just a memoir, it is an at times painfully honest account of one woman's quest to find answers to the questions that troubled her from an early age, and ultimately to discover a philosophy of life by which she might live. Along the way, she examines various religions, but it is not until her introduction to Gurdjieff's work through the 1941 lectures of J.G. Bennett, the essence of which she reproduces in his original words, that her search is rewarded. In later chapters, she faithfully reproduces the conversations she had in Paris with Gurdjieff and the monumental effect his teachings had on her search for Truth. Gurdjieff has had a lifelong influence on Dorothy and she spent much of the last 25 years of her life setting down her memories and ensuring their accuracy. At the time of writing, she was one of the last few people left alive who knew Gurdjieff personally, and as such her book gives an authentic view of the work and charismatic nature of this teacher, who Colin Wilson called "the greatest teacher of the 20th century"... However, the unique element of this book is her description of the way meetings with Gurdjieff himself, along with her fervent study of relevant works, gradually enabled her to discover herself"--Dust jacket.
