Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL)-based data links are attractive due to their low-power dissipation and low-cost manufacturability. This chapter reviews the foundations for this technology, as well as the device and module design challenges of extending the data rate beyond the current level. We begin with a review of data communications from the business perspective, and continue with a brief discussion of the current and future standards. This is followed by a survey of recent advances in VCSELs, including data links operating at 28Gb/s. We review the recent efforts on ultra-fast data links and discuss the advantages of the different approaches. We also examine key design aspects of optical transceiver modules and we focus our discussion on novel applications in high-performance computing using both multi-mode and single-mode fiber optics. We highlight the importance of the device/component-level and system-level modeling and show some modeling examples with comparison to measured data. We conclude with a comparison of the VCSEL-based data links with other competing technologies, including silicon photonics and short-cavity edge emitting lasers.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes work on the development of high-speed vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) for multi-gigabit per second optical data communications applications (LDRD case number 3506.010). The program resulted in VCSELs that operate with an electrical bandwidth of 20 GHz along with a simultaneous conversion efficiency (DC to light) of about 20%. To achieve the large electrical bandwidth, conventional VCSELs were appropriately modified to reduce electrical parasitics and adapted for microwave probing for high-speed operation.

The performance of VCSELs now exceeds that of edge-emitting lasers in many respects, and offers a superior optical beam and much easier monolithic integrability. As the VCSEL technology improves further, and their number and variety multiply, their potential applications will likely expand at a rapid pace. Vertical-cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers: Technology and Applications addresses two main objectives. It provides the researcher and device engineer with a reference guide to understanding the physical principles as well as the practical design concepts of VCSELs. Furthermore, it provides the system designer or application engineer with a review of the properties of VCSELs, and an overview of some of the applications in which the VCSEL has already played an important role. This book features contributions from prominent researchers in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rise of mobile (cellphones, tablets, notebooks, etc.) and broadband wireline communications (Fiber to the Home), there are increasing demands being placed on transmitters for moving data from device to device and around the world. Digital and analog fiber-optic communications have been the key technology to meet this challenge, ushering in ubiquitous Internet and cable TV over the past 20 years. At the physical layer, high-volume low-cost manufacturing of semiconductor optoelectronic devices has played an integral role in allowing for deployment of high-speed communication links. In particular, vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSEL) have revolutionized short reach communications and are poised to enter more markets due to their low cost, small size, and performance. However, VCSELs have disadvantages such as limited modulation performance and large frequency chirp which limits fiber transmission speed and distance, key parameters for many fiber-optic communication systems. Optical injection locking is one method to overcome these limitations without re-engineering the VCSEL at the device level. By locking the frequency and phase of the VCSEL by the direct injection of light from another laser oscillator, improved device performance is achieved in a post-fabrication method. In this dissertation, optical injection locking of VCSELs is investigated from an applications perspective. Optical injection locking of VCSELs can be used as a pathway to reduce complexity, cost, and size of both digital and analog fiber-optic communications. On the digital front, reduction of frequency chirp via bit pattern inversion for large-signal modulation is experimentally demonstrated showing up to 10 times reduction in frequency chirp and over 90 times increase in fiber transmission distance. Based on these results, a new reflection-based interferometric model for optical injection locking was established to explain this phenomenon. On the analog side, the resonance frequency enhancement was exploited for millimeter-wave radio over fiber communications. Experimental demonstration of 4 Gb/s data transmission over 20 km of fiber and 3 m of wireless transmission at a 60 GHz carrier frequency was achieved. Additionally, optical injection of multi-transverse mode (MM) VCSELs was investigated showing record resonance frequency enhancement of> 54 GHz and 3- dB bandwidth of 38 GHz. Besides these applications, a number of other intriguing applications are also discussed, including an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) and wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical networks (WDM-PON). Finally, the future of optical injection locking and its direction going forward will be discussed.

Book excerpt: A practical, hands-on guidebook for the efficient modeling of VCSELs Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are a unique type of semiconductor laser whose optical output is vertically emitted from the surface as opposed to conventional edge-emitting semiconductor lasers. Complex in design and expensive to produce, VCSELs nevertheless represent an already widely used laser technology that promises to have even more significant applications in the future. Although the research has accelerated, there have been relatively few books written on this important topic. Analysis and Design of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers seeks to encapsulate this growing body of knowledge into a single, comprehensive reference that will be of equal value for both professionals and academics in the field. The author, a recognized expert in the field of VCSELs, attempts to clarify often conflicting assumptions in order to help readers achieve the simplest and most efficient VCSEL models for any given problem. Highlights of the text include: * A clear and comprehensive theoretical treatment of VCSELs * Detailed derivations for understanding the operational principles of VCSELs * Mathematical models for the investigation of electrical, optical, and thermal properties of VCSELs * Case studies on the mathematical modeling of VCSELs and the implementation of simulation programs

Book excerpt: As we reach the data transmission limits of copper wire and communications experts seek to bring the speed of long-haul fiber optics networks closer to access points, optical interconnects promise to provide efficient, high-speed data transmission for the next generation of networks and systems. They offer higher bit-rates, virtually no crosstalk, lower demands on power requirements and thermal management, and the possibility of two-dimensional channel arrays for chip-to-chip communication. The Handbook of Optical Interconnects introduces the systems and devices that will bring the speed and quality of optical transmission closer to the circuit board. Contributed by active experts, most from leading technology companies in the US and Japan, this outstanding handbook details various low-cost and small-size configurations, illustrates the discussion with more than 300 figures, and offers a look at the applications and future of this exciting and rapidly growing field. The book includes a detailed introduction to vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs); the use of optical interconnects in metropolitan, local-area, and access networks through FTTP (FTTH); and Jisso technologies, which are critical for developing low-cost, small-size modules. Driving down the size and cost of optical interconnects is vital for integrating these technologies into the network and onto microprocessors, and the Handbook of Optical Interconnects provides the knowledge and tools necessary to accomplish these goals.

Book excerpt: This final technical report outlines the development of Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) for use in high-speed parallel data links. During this contract, Optical Concepts has produced VCSELs with greatly improved performance, and has developed packaging technologies for VCSELs. VCSELs have been developed that operate at greater than 5 GHz with sub-milliamp threshold currents. With low turn on delays, these devices have demonstrated GHz data rates with no pre-bias. VCSEL arrays have been incorporated into high-speed, parallel, fiber coupled packages. Optical Concepts has demonstrated packages using both top and bottom emitting VCSELs, and has developed an integrated microlens technology to ease packaging tolerances.
