Gefahr droht dann, wenn es zu einem Prozess der Monopolisierung beider Systeme, zu einer Gleichschaltung von Politik und Medien auf Kosten deren fundamentaler Eigendynamik und Unabhängigkeit kommt. 1993 betrat ein Mann die politische Bühne Italiens, der eben diese latente Gefahr zu einer ganz realen Bedrohung werden ließ Silvio Berlusconi. Medienmogul, -Zar oder -Unternehmer - Begrifflichkeiten, die seinen unvergleichlichen Einfluss auf die italienische Medienlandschaft und damit auf die politische Berichterstattung beschreiben, gibt es genug. Doch welche Macht hatte Berlusconi zu seiner Regierungszeit über die italienische Medienlandschaft tatsächlich? Wie gestaltete sich das Verhältnis von Politik und Medien zu dieser Zeit? Um dies in ausreichender Form beleuchten zu können, wird zunächst das Verhältnis zwischen Medien und Politik unter Berlusconi analysiert, in einem zweiten Schritt die Medialisierung seit Gerhard Schröder in Deutschland diskutiert, und letztlich der Versuch einer Prognose für die Zukunft unternommen.

April 2004 wurde vom italienischen Senat das neue Mediengesetz verabschiedet, dass der technologischen Entwicklung und den Konvergenzprozess zwischen traditionellem Rundfunk und anderen Bereichen der Telekommunikation, Presse und des Internets Rechnung tragen, und Italien mit modernen Vorschriften ins digitale Zeitalter einführen will. Bei näherer Untersuchung zeigt sich jedoch, dass die „Legge Gasparri“ (benannt nach dem zuständigen Kommunikationsminister Maurizio Gasparri) vielmehr als beispielhaft für die Problematik der Verschränkung von Politik und Medien interpretiert werden kann. Diese Verschränkung erfährt mit dem neuen italienischen Mediengesetz eine in Europa einzigartige Zuspitzung. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die These der problematischen Verschränkung von Regierungsinteresse und Medienkonzentration durch die „Legge Gasparri“ auszuarbeiten. Als Überblick wird dazu anfangs kurz der gegenwärtige Zustand des italienischen Fernsehmarktes dargestellt. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird die Entwicklung der Medienlandschaft erarbeitet, um den Kontext der Legge Gasparri zu erschließen. Dabei werden im ersten Teil der Arbeit vor allem die beiden Vorgänger des neuen Mediengesetzes erörtert, die „Legge Mammi“ und die „Legge Maccanico“. Diesen Teil abschließend werden die beiden Gesetze in einer ersten Bewertung analysiert. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit befasst sich eingehend mit den unmittelbaren Kontextbedingungen der Legge Gasparri, mit der inhaltlichen Erläuterung der Gesetzesvorlage und der anschließenden Analyse des dargelegten Maßnahmenkatalogs. Dabei soll das neue Mediengesetz mit der Legge Mammi und der Legge Maccanico in Bezug gesetzt werden. Der Verabschiedungsprozess des Gesetzes wird im letzten Punkt erläutert, da er aufschlussreich die Problematik der Verschränkung von Politik und Medien noch einmal veranschaulicht.

Book excerpt: A central pillar of contemporary communication research is the analysis of filmed interactions between people. The techniques employed in such analysis first took on a recognizably modern form in the 1970s, but their roots go back to the earliest days of motion picture technology in the late nineteenth century. This book presents original essays accompanied by written responses which together create a dialogue exploring early efforts at audio-visual sequence analysis and their common goal to capture the "whole" of the communicative situation. The first three chapters of this volume look at the film-based research of Gestalt psychologists in Berlin as well as psychologists in the orbit of Karl and Charlotte Bühler in Vienna in the first decades of the twentieth century. Most of these figures – along with many other Central European scholars of this era – were driven into exile in the United States after the rise of National Socialism in the 1930s. This scientific migration led to the cross-pollination of communication studies in America, an outcome visible in the leading project in interaction research of the mid-twentieth century, the Natural History of an Interview. The following two chapters examine this project in its historical context. The volume closes with a critical edition of a treasure from the archives: the transcript of a speech delivered by Ray Birdwhistell, a key participant in the Natural History of an Interview project and founder of kinesics.

The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people. Several authors take a political ecology approach to their topic, but the emphasis here is less on hydro-politics than on the cultural meaning of rivers to the communities we describe. How has the cultural significance of rivers shifted as a result of colonisation, development and nation-building? How do people whose identities are fundamentally rooted in their relationship to a particular river renegotiate that relationship when the river is dammed to generate hydro-power or polluted by mining activities? Book excerpt: The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena; they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or contents. Transfer comprises all sorts of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of transferring literature across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cultural borders; thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature. The thirty-eight papers included in this volume and dedicated to research in this area were previously read at the ICLA conference 2016 in Vienna. They are ample proof that the field remains at the center of interest in Comparative Literature.

Combining a wide range of disciplinary approaches, methods and theories, the volume assembles over 50 contributions that explore and compare processes of religious individualisation in different religious environments and historical periods, in particular in Asia, the Mediterranean, and Europe from antiquity to the recent past. Contrary to standard theories of modernisation, which tend to regard religious individualisation as a specifically modern or early modern as well as an essentially Western or Christian phenomenon, the chapters reveal processes of religious individualisation in a large variety of non-Western and pre-modern scenarios.
