Book Synopsis Views and Plans of the Petit Trianon at Versailles by : Pierre Arizzoli-Clémentel
Download or read book Views and Plans of the Petit Trianon at Versailles written by Pierre Arizzoli-Clémentel and published by Gourcuff Gradenigo. This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the watercolors of "Trianon" which were comissioned by Marie-Antoinette for the albums she gave to visting royalty to whom she offered Fetes in the Trianon gardens. These watercolors were executed by Claude-Louis Chatelet and Richard Mique around 1785-86 and bound into albums with gilt-embossed leather bindings and covers lined with silk. Four are known to have survived; the 26 watercolors and plans reproduced in this book are kept in the album of the Biblioteca Estense in Modena. They are exquisite testimonials of the pavilions, fabriques and gardens which were built for Marie-Antionette at the Trianon and include views of the temple of Love, the rocher, the Belvedere, the jeu de Bague and more. The sophisticated presentation of this book has kept the spirit of Marie-Antoinette's albums, and the author's introduction and captions help the reader to understand why and how the "Trianon" became very quickly the epitome of the decorative elegance and refinement that gave France the artistic hegemony at the end of the 18th century.

Book Synopsis Marie Antoinette and the Last Garden of Versailles by : Christian Duvernois
Download or read book Marie Antoinette and the Last Garden of Versailles written by Christian Duvernois and published by Rizzoli International Publications. This book was released on 2008 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marie-Antoinette has been idolized as the height of eighteenth-century French style and vilified as the spark that ignited the French Revolution. This book departs from such traditional interpretations of the infamous queen’s reign and chooses to reflect on the humanistic aspects of her private realm. To escape the formalities and royal obligations of Louis XVI’s court, Marie-Antoinette created a private realm of pleasure for herself at the Petit Trianon and Hameau, where she planted the first Anglo-Chinese garden; created a trysting grotto; a working farm; and revolutionized architecture and gardening trends for the century to come. Marie-Antoinette’s entire private domain and its story are told in beautiful photographic detail by François Halard for the first time since its recent restoration and accompanied by well-researched texts by garden expert Christian Duvernois.

Among the artists represented are many of the major figures of this magnificent period of French art, including Le Brun, Lemoine, Cochin, Claude-Joseph, Horace Vernet, Jean-Baptiste Isabey, Paul Delaroche, and Jacques-Louis David, whose splendid compositional study for his Oath of the Tennis Court, the event that marked the beginning of the French Revolution, is of particular interest.
Book Synopsis Representing the Past in the Art of the Long Nineteenth Century by : Matthew C. Potter
Download or read book Representing the Past in the Art of the Long Nineteenth Century written by Matthew C. Potter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection explores the intersection of historical studies and the artistic representation of the past in the long nineteenth century. The case studies provide not just an account of the pursuit of history in art within Western Europe but also examples from beyond that sphere. These cover canonical and conventional examples of history painting as well as more inclusive, ‘popular’ and vernacular visual cultural phenomena. General themes explored include the problematics internal to the theory and practice of academic history painting and historical genre painting, including compositional devices and the authenticity of artefacts depicted; relationships of power and purpose in historical art; the use of historical art for alternative Liberal and authoritarian ideals; the international cross-fertilisation of ideas about historical art; and exploration of the diverse influences of socioeconomic and geopolitical factors. This book will be of particular interest to scholars of the histories of nineteenth-century art and culture.
Book Synopsis Views of the Gardens at Marly by : Gérard Mabille
Download or read book Views of the Gardens at Marly written by Gérard Mabille and published by Alain de Gourcuff. This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kingdom of water, renowned for its art of topiary, Marly was designed for and by Louis XIV as a refreshing diversion from the stifling atmosphere of Versailles. It was probably his favorite pavilion. This book reveals the watercolors which were commissioned by the King to keep memory of the gardens in Marly and includes all the cabinets, fountains, cascades and games which were designed by Louis himself in close collaboration with the young J.H. Mansart. It also includes precise descriptions of the sculptures, the greenery, and the pools which gave Marly its unique airy feeling. All the watercolors reproduced in this book are kept at The Archives Nationales in Paris and have never been published previously as a whole. They probably represent the most complete and outstanding testimonial of Louis XIV's taste.
