Book Synopsis The So-called Mixed Text by : Clinton S. Baldwin
Download or read book The So-called Mixed Text written by Clinton S. Baldwin and published by Studies in Biblical Literature. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, a number of scholars have identified a text-type in six of the books of the Catholic Epistles that they have called «mixed.» The So-Called Mixed Text: An Examination of the Non-Alexandrian and Non-Byzantine Text-Type in the Catholic Epistles is concerned with a comprehensive identification and evaluation of this so-called mixed text-type. This mixed category, if supported by empirical investigation to be more original than the Alexandrian and Byzantine texts, could necessitate the re-evaluation of these established text-types and also the re-evaluation of the designation «mixed» attributed to this group. In pursuit of this objective, Clinton S. Baldwin undertakes an in-depth study of this mixed phenomenon by studying 407 Greek manuscripts of the Catholic Epistles. Having identified 13 mixed groups across the Catholic Epistles, it is shown that the weighted value of this mixed category is negligible in terms of uncovering the earliest originals. Also of significance to this study is the use of factor analysis for the classification of New Testament Greek manuscripts. The reliability of factor analysis is demonstrated by another vital contribution of this study: the classification of the manuscripts of the Epistle of Jude, a book which hither-to-fore had not been comprehensively classified. Most of the manuscripts classified by factor analysis have later been confirmed by a modified form of the Claremont Profile Method. Finally, The So-Called Mixed Text demonstrates that the evolution of the New Testament text, which began in the earlier centuries, continued into the Middle Ages.

This volume is a historical examination of the process through which early Seventh-day Adventists justified and accepted White's prophetic claims between 1844 and 1889. It evaluates and analyzes the development of their understanding of the doctrine of the gift of prophesy in general, and White's gift in particular.
Book Synopsis Indicators of Typology Within the Old Testament by : Friedbert Ninow
Download or read book Indicators of Typology Within the Old Testament written by Friedbert Ninow and published by Peter Lang D. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study seeks to ascertain whether there are indicators of typology within the Old Testament. Various elements that comprise biblical typology such as the historical aspect, divine design, prophetic aspect, Steigerung (intensification), and eschatology are traced in a number of texts that deal with the Exodus motif. Chapter 1 surveys the perception and use of typology throughout the centuries up to the present. Chapter 2 seeks to establish the basic elements that are part of a biblical typology in passages that are directly linked to or describe the Exodus in the Pentateuch. Chapter 3 seeks to trace these elements throughout the prophetic writings that deal with the Exodus motif. This study concludes that there is, indeed, a type/anti-type relation that connects the Old with the New Testament which has various indicators already within the Old Testament.

Book excerpt: Most scholars understand that the Day of Atonement ritual of Leviticus 16 provides the main template for understanding Jesus's death and exaltation in the argument of Hebrews. This study suggests that the perspective of Hebrews is much wider than that, conceiving of the ascension as the inauguration of Jesus' office as "Son" at the "right hand of God." The title "Son" is the fulfillment of the promises made to David (2 Sam 7:12-15), which are claimed for Jesus explicitly in Heb 1:5 and 13. This connection to the Davidic covenantal traditions brings closer the theology of Hebrews and the theology of other New Testament documents, which opens new vistas for understanding early Christianity.

Book Synopsis Scripture in the Theologies of W. Pannenberg and D.G. Bloesch by : Frank M. Hasel
Download or read book Scripture in the Theologies of W. Pannenberg and D.G. Bloesch written by Frank M. Hasel and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-03-01 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scripture has always played an important role in Christian theology. This study provides an issue oriented overview of the concepts of Scripture in Protestant theology from the 16th century Reformation onward. It then sets forth the concepts of Scripture in the theologies of two contemporary systematic theologians: W. Pannenberg and D. G. Bloesch. It analyzes, compares and evaluates the theological and anthropological presuppositions that have influenced their concept of Scripture. Despite fundamentally different starting points and other significant distinctions Pannenberg and Bloesch reveal surprising similarities. This seems to suggest that for both the concept of Scripture is determined ultimately by presuppositions that are derived and shaped extra scripturam".
Book Synopsis Incarnation and Covenant in the Prologue to the Fourth Gospel (John 1:1-18) by : Wilson Paroschi
Download or read book Incarnation and Covenant in the Prologue to the Fourth Gospel (John 1:1-18) written by Wilson Paroschi and published by Europäische Hochschulschriften / European University Studies / Publications Universitaires Européennes. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study deals with the structural and exegetical relationship between pre-existence and incarnation in the dynamics of John's Prologue (John 1:1-18). It discusses the point in the narrative at which the shift from the pre-existent Logos to the incarnate Christ takes place and, therefore, the perspective from which the individual parts of the passage (vss. 1-5; vss. 6-13; vss. 14-18) should be interpreted. By making a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the text and evaluating all contrasting views on the subject, the book shows the essential chronological order of the narrative, whose climax (vss. 14-18) is not the announcement of the incarnation proper, but rather a profound theological reflection on the significance of that event based on the covenantal traditions of the exodus story and later prophetic expectations.

Book Synopsis Criticism of Theological Reason by : Fernando Luis Canale
Download or read book Criticism of Theological Reason written by Fernando Luis Canale and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-05-09 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ongoing quest for Christian unity, theological controversies and confessional divisions continue to bar the way. In this work, Fernando Canale attempts to overcome Christianity's theological disagreements by placing theological reason-which unwittingly drives these contentions-under critical investigation. In A Criticism of Theological Reason Canale proposes that theology should undertake this investigation independently from previous philosophical interpretations of reason. Thus, a Criticism of Theological Reason requires a careful examination of (1) the phenomenological structure of reason, (2) its presuppositional conditions, and (3) the interpretation of Being as either time or timelessness, within the philosophical, theological, and biblical contexts. The philosophical context clarifies the function of reason in the construction of meaning and the role of the interpretations of Being in the functioning of reason. The theological context illustrates the way in which the classical and modern philosophical interpretations of reason have shaped the constitution of theological meanings (exegesis, creeds, and dogmatics). Finally, through an epistemological analysis of Exodus 3:14, Canale shows that the biblical interpretation of Being provides the necessary ground to free Christian theology from the philosophically originated Onto-theo-logical interpretations of reason replacing it with a biblically originated Theo-onto-logical interpretation of theological reason. Canale hopes that a clearer understanding of reason's workings in theological discourse-particularly the biblical interpretation of Being and reason-will help Christians surmount current theological controversies and foment the ultimate ecumenical goal of Christian unity.

Book Synopsis Metaphors and Similes for Yahweh in Hosea, 14:2-9 (1-8) by : Bernhard Oestreich
Download or read book Metaphors and Similes for Yahweh in Hosea, 14:2-9 (1-8) written by Bernhard Oestreich and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared with the effort to interpret Hosea 1-3, the final chapter has been rather neglected. Additionally, the variety of explanations of biblical images in Hos 14 indicates a necessity to clarify the methods of their interpretation. The metaphors and similes of Hos 14:2-9 referring to Yahweh, healing, loving dew, and tree, are investigated. They are interpreted on the background of their language conventions. Thereby the actual usage in Hosea with its twists, alterations, and reversals becomes obvious. The study demonstrates that Hosea's metaphors and similes are deeply rooted in Israelite language traditions. They are not to be interpreted as literal description of cultic experiences. All the metaphors for Yahweh in Hos 14 are traditionally connected with kingship. They are used in such a way that they express an eschatological hope with Yahweh as Israel's king, however, without downgrading Yahweh's radical judgment.
