Book excerpt: Forecast verification, or evaluation, is used to identify model strengths and weaknesses in order to improve forecast accuracy. This is done by comparing model output to actual observations. The Model Evaluation Tools (MET) verification package was developed at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Developmental Testbed Center (DTC) using output from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) modeling system. MET was developed to encourage consistent verification among WRF users. The package consists of a set of highly configurable tools used to create a statistical based model verification system. The MET package was used to evaluate output from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSM&T) real-time WRF forecasting system over the Rapid City, South Dakota, National Weather Service (NWS) County Warning Area (CWA). The current WRF system uses recycling, 3-D variational data assimilation, and nudging.

Operational Weather Forecasting covers the whole process of forecast production, from understanding the nature of the forecasting problem, gathering the observational data with which to initialise and verify forecasts, designing and building a model (or models) to advance those initial conditions forwards in time and then interpreting the model output and putting it into a form which is relevant to customers of weather forecasts. Included is the generation of forecasts on the monthly-to-seasonal timescales, often excluded in text-books despite this type of forecasting having been undertaken for several years. This is a rapidly developing field, with a lot of variations in practices between different forecasting centres. Thus the authors have tried to be as generic as possible when describing aspects of numerical model design and formulation. The prospect of providing early guidance to forecasters from a limited-area, fine-mesh numerical forecasting model has been attractive to both services. The proposal would be to have the model operate at, say, two hours after the synoptic hour at which time sufficient data from the limited area would have been collected and reasonable initial values could be readied for the model. Boundary values would be provided by a previously run hemispheric, large scale model. Additional benefits could be expected to derive from the better resolution of the LFM. The truncation error control in space should, perhaps, result in more accurate phase speeds and positioning of the smaller scale synoptic features. Analysis and balancing on a higher resolution grid may capture detail that would be lost in the operational (PEP) model. In particular, better initial depiction of the moisture parameters could conceivably result in better precipitation and sensible weather forecasting guidance"--Introduction.
