Book Synopsis The Persistence of the Sacred by : Skye Doney
Download or read book The Persistence of the Sacred written by Skye Doney and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For millions of Catholic believers, pilgrimage has offered possible answers to the mysteries of sickness, life, and death. The Persistence of the Sacred explores the religious worldviews of Europeans who travelled to Trier and Aachen, two cities in Western Germany, to view the sacred relics in their cathedrals. The Persistence of the Sacred challenges the narrative of widespread secularization in Europe during the long nineteenth century and reveals that religious practices thrived well into the modern period. It shows both that men were more active in their faith than historians have realized and how clergy and pilgrims did not always agree about the meaning of relics. Drawing on private ephemeral and material sources including films, photographs, postcards, correspondence, and souvenirs, Skye Doney uncovers the enduring and diverse sacred worldview of German Catholics and argues that laity and clergy had very different perspectives on the meaning of pilgrimage. Recovering the history of Catholic pilgrimage, The Persistence of the Sacred aims to understand the relationship between relics and religiosity, between modernity and faith, and between humanity and God.
Book Synopsis Beyond the Kremlin’s Reach? by : Jan Zofka
Download or read book Beyond the Kremlin’s Reach? written by Jan Zofka and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-29 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines relations between the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and socialist Eastern European states during the Cold War. The chapters take previous findings on government policy and China’s role as a global player in the Cold War game as a starting point to locate the PRC in the socialist world and assess levels of interaction beyond diplomatic and governmental relations. By focusing on transfers and interconnections and the social dimension of governmental interactions, the primary goal of this book is to explore structures, institutions, and spaces of interaction between China and Eastern Europe and their potential autonomy from political conjunctures. The guiding question that the book raises is: To what extent did Chinese and Eastern European players, outside the range of the power centres, have room to manoeuvre beyond the agendas of the Kremlin, national governments, or party leaderships? The question of the relative autonomy becomes especially vibrant against the backdrop of the development of Sino–Soviet relations from alliance to split to reconciliation through the Cold War era. This book contributes to the growing scholarship on East-South and intra-bloc relations from the perspective of global and transnational history and will be of interest to researchers, students and policy makers in the fields of History, East European and Russian studies, International Relations and politics. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Cold War History.

Book Synopsis Soldier Repatriation by : Kaare Dahl Martinsen
Download or read book Soldier Repatriation written by Kaare Dahl Martinsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soldier repatriation from Afghanistan has impacted debate about the war. This study highlights this impact with particular focus on Britain, Denmark and Germany. All three countries deployed soldiers soon after the 9/11 attacks, yet their role in Afghanistan and the casualty rates suffered, have been vastly different. This book looks at how their casualties influenced the framing of the war by analysing the political discourse about the casualties, how the media covered the repatriation and the burials, and how the dead were officially recognised and commemorated. Explaining how bodies count is not done exclusively by focusing on the political leadership and the media in the three countries, the response from the men and women in Afghanistan to the official framing of the war is given particular weight. Martinsen contributes to our understanding of European strategic culture by showing how countries respond to the same security challenges.
Book Synopsis Expressionism as an International Literary Phenomenon by : Ulrich Weisstein
Download or read book Expressionism as an International Literary Phenomenon written by Ulrich Weisstein and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1973-01-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ulrich Weisstein’s collection of 21 essays offers a comparative study of Expressionism as a Modernist movement whose dynamic core lay in Germany and Austria-Hungary, but which transformed artistic practices in other European countries. The focus, Weisstein argues, “must be strictly and sharply aimed at a specific body of works and opinions—a relatively dense core surrounded by a less clearly defined fringe zone—indigenous to the German speaking countries.” The volume spans an “Expressionist” period extending from roughly 1910 to 1925. Weisstein himself contributes two introductory chapters on problems of definition and a thoughtful analysis of English Vorticism. An ample context is set by comparative essays concerned with international movements such as Futurism that had an impact on German Expressionist drama, prose, and poetry, together with essays on the adaptation of Expressionist forms in countries such as Poland, Russia, Hungary, South Slavic nations and the United States. These essays call attention to representative authors and artists, as well as to periodicals and artistic circles. Reviewers have praised not only the presentation of “literary links and interaction” among national cultures, but especially the “most rewarding” interdisciplinary essays on Dada and on Expressionist painting, music, and film.

Book Synopsis The (im)possibilities of Machine Translation by : Anja Schwarzl
Download or read book The (im)possibilities of Machine Translation written by Anja Schwarzl and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main topics of the book is the comparison between the human and machine translation process, including information on translation theories and models of translation. These are illustrated by so-called Think-Aloud Protocols. The longest part of the book is devoted to the evaluation of machine translation, as well as the comparison of the programs themselves. Using different text types (grammar test, business English, user's manual, children's story, scientific text), various evaluation methods (four-scale rating, benchmark test, test suite, error counting, backtranslation) are compared. The final chapter looks at the future perspectives of machine translation with the possible inclusion of expert systems, artificial intelligence, fuzzy logic, neural networks and chaostheory.
