Book Synopsis Hungary Between Two Empires 1526–1711 by : Géza Pálffy
Download or read book Hungary Between Two Empires 1526–1711 written by Géza Pálffy and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hungarian defeat to the Ottoman army at the pivotal Battle of Mohács in 1526 led to the division of the Kingdom of Hungary into three parts, altering both the shape and the ethnic composition of Central Europe for centuries to come. Hungary thus became a battleground between the Ottoman and Habsburg empires. In this sweeping historical survey, Géza Pálffy takes readers through a crucial period of upheaval and revolution in Hungary, which had been the site of a flowering of economic, cultural, and intellectual progress—but battles with the Ottomans lead to over a century of war and devastation. Pálffy explores Hungary's role as both a borderland and a theater of war through the turn of the 18th century. In this way, Hungary became a crucially important field on which key debates over religion, government, law, and monarchy played out. Reflecting 25 years of archival research and presented here in English for the first time, Hungary between Two Empires 1526–1711 offers a fresh and thorough exploration of this key moment in Hungarian history and, in turn, the creation of a modern Europe.

This collective volume provides a fascinating overview to scholars and students interested in the paradigms of the history of frontiers, of imperial structures, and of early modern state finances. The first part of the book examines the birth and development of the Hungarian and Habsburg defence systems from their origins until their dissolution in the early eighteenth century. The second part focuses on the Ottoman military establishment in Hungary. Special emphasis has been put throughout on administration, finance, manpower problems, and aspects of the military revolution in the marches. The book is unique in its complex and comparative approach; no similar effort has yet been made concerning other areas of the Ottoman Empire.

Book Synopsis War, Communication, and the Politics of Culture in Early Modern Venice by : Anastasia Stouraiti
Download or read book War, Communication, and the Politics of Culture in Early Modern Venice written by Anastasia Stouraiti and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-31 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weaving together cultural history and critical imperial studies, Anastasia Stouraiti shows how war and territorial expansion shaped seventeenth-century Venetian culture and society. Using an extensive array of sources, Stouraiti tests conventional assumptions about republicanism, commercial peace and cross-cultural exchange and offers a new approach to the study of the Republic of Venice. By bringing the history of communication in dialogue with empire-building and colonial conquest in the Mediterranean, this book provides an original interpretation of the politics of knowledge in wartime Venice. Stouraiti demonstrates that the Venetian-Ottoman War of the Morea (1684-1699) was mediated through a diverse range of cultural mechanisms of patrician elite domination that orchestrated the production of popular consent. Exploring the militarisation of the public sphere and the orientalist discourse associated with it, Stouraiti exposes the surprising connections between bellicose foreign policies and domestic power politics in a state celebrated as the most serene republic of merchants.
