Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transformation of the Venetian glass industry during the Renaissance was not only a technical phenomenon, but also a social one. In this volume, Patrick McCray examines the demand, production and distribution of glass and glassmaking technology during this period and evaluates several key topics, including the nature of Renaissance demand for certain luxury goods, the interaction between industry and government in the Renaissance, and technological change as a social process. McCray places in its broader economic and cultural context a craft and industry that has been traditionally viewed primarily through the surviving artefacts held in museum collections. McCray explores the social and economic context of glassmaking in Venice, from the guild and state level down to the workings of the individual glass house. He tracks the dissemination of Venetian-style glassmaking throughout Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and its effects on Venice’s glass industry. Integrating evidence from a wide variety of sources - written documents such as shop records and recipe books, pictorial representations of glass and glassmaking, and the careful physical and chemical analysis of glass pieces that have survived to the present - he examines the relation between consumer demand and technological change. In the process, he traces the organizational changes that signified a transition from an older and more traditional manner of ’artisan’ manufacture to a modern, ’factory-style’ manner of production.

Book excerpt: The Salviati Collection of Venetian glass was presented to the Leland Stanford Junior Museum, California, at the end of the 19th century by Maurizio Camerino and Silvio Salviati. The gift, which encompasses virtually all the colors, styles and techniques marketed under the celebrated name, has been for the most part under wraps since the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and is to be displayed for the first time. This collection forms the basis of this lavish book which accompanies its exhibition at the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University, California. 245 pieces are illustrated and described in this the most comprehensive publication on Salviati glass yet published. An introductory essay explores the art of Venetian glass blowing, a tradition that goes back more than a thousand years.

Book excerpt: The volume presents the surprising collection of Venetian glass donated by spouses Carla Nasci and Ferruccio Franzoia to the Carlo Rizzarda Modern Art Gallery in Feltre. A collection of over 800 pieces ranging from the eighteenth century to today allows to marvel, in particular, at the Murano production and its great glassmakers.0A first nucleus includes the elegant Liberty and Déco glasses produced by Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Cappellin Venini & C. in the twenties: the artistic director of the company was Vittorio Zecchin, one of the most fascinating personalities working in Venice between the First World War and the decade later, who with his elegant, transparent blown glass inspired by the Renaissance, marked a decisive turning point in contemporary Murano production.0A second group is represented by the artifacts produced between 1925 and 1960 referable to the figure of Carlo Scarpa, creator of highly successful, innovative glass shapes and fabrics, who collaborated respectively with the Cappellini company since 1926 and with Venini since 1932, together with a mix of products from other companies and authors active in the lagoon.0The third type of documented artifacts is that of table glasses: consumer objects destined for ephemeral use and therefore an important testimony of taste and customs.
