Book excerpt: Śivakōṭyācārya’s Vaḍḍārādhane (Veneration to the Elders) is the earliest extant prose work in Kannada language written by Śivakōṭyācārya during 940 CE. This classical text reflects the oral tradition of narrating stories of legendary religious ascetics based on the gāhās which were taken from Bhagavatī Ārādhanā. This is a peculiar but commendable way of presenting stories of the senior and respectable ascetics combining oral and written styles of narration. Thus, Vaḍḍārādhane stands as an excellent example for an ancient classical text, fit for linguistic and cultural study. Each story in this collection, is wonderful in its own way. Generally, religious stories do not evoke interest but present a series of dull events. However, this text is full of incidents depicting human values, ways of wicked people, self-imposed vows, violence and non-violence and human life with all types of experiences. Another distinguishing feature of Vaḍḍārādhane is that there is not a whiff of intolerance towards other religions or faiths or sects and this is most remarkable when we recall that most of our early writings indulge in belittling doctrines of faiths other than their own. This positive attitude, in a sense, makes this religious text absolutely liberal and almost secular. Vaḍḍārādhane is now rendered into contemporary English by a team of writers and linguists. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Book excerpt: The Bisa people of Nabwalya, Zambia love their culture and gladly celebrate all their traditional festivals. This book presents exciting research into Kusefya pa ngena, rituals through which the Bisa elect ancestors for veneration. The Bisa speak freely of how their belief in ancestor veneration does not conflict with their worship of God. For them, the two work hand in hand. Traditional practices are considered vital to the community because they enhance life, reinforce cultural values, and explain life events. Those questioned said ancestor veneration should continue because it benefits current and future generations. For example, their most celebrated ancestor, Kabuswe Yombwe, when petitioned, provides rain and a good harvest for the community. People affirmed that rain fell each time they petitioned Kabuswe. One woman, who is married to an elder in a Pentecostal church, vowed not to give up ancestor veneration, to which she attributed the healing of her son and daughter. She pledged her allegiance to both Jesus Christ and to her family's ancestors. In another story, an ancestor appears in a dream to an expectant woman demanding that her child be given a feminine name. The mother obeys to avoid the child being born with a sickness . . .

Book excerpt: Now in its second printing, this modest work is an anthology of spiritual advice given by various of the nineteenth-century teachers of Optina Monastery in central Russia, organized thematically under headings such as spiritual warfare, the love of neighbor, faith, the will of God, the education of children, the commandments of God, the path of salvation, etc. Each piece of advice varies in length from a single sentence to a full paragraph. Pithy, immediately accessible, and universally applicable, these counsels resemble the sayings of the ancient Desert Fathers. Appropriate both for prolonged study and for daily devotional reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eldership at the Lord's Table was written to meet the needs of Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) elders in the 21st century. Elders in particular congregations may minister in a variety of ways, but the one common ministry setting for elders throughout the denomination is weekly ministry at the Lord's Table. This resource is designed to give elders the instruction and assistance they need for their Table Ministry without expecting them to read a lengthy volume on history and theology. It provides the reader with a concise history of Table eldership with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a brief treatment of common Disciples' theology of the Lord's Supper, helpful hints on how to craft meaningful and brief communion prayers for both bread and cup, examples of communion prayers, and annotated lists of resources that can be consulted by elders if they would like to study further or seek assistance in other areas.

The reader will receive lifelong benefit and be enriched by these practical and understandable studies. Exposition, commentary, and practical application of the meaning and message of the Bible will be found throughout this giant volume. It shows throughout a deep awareness and appreciation of the grand themes of the gospel, as found from the opening book of the Bible through Revelation.

A good place to begin is understanding and imitating the character qualifications the Bible lays out for elders. While elders are meant to exemplify these traits, all Christians are to display them. And, with just one exception, each of them is related to our moral character.

Book excerpt: New elders and veteran leaders alike will find wisdom, biblical guidance, and useful suggestions in Gary Straub's examination of the crucial role of elders in Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) congregations. This simple and easy to read overview of Disciples eldership examines the nature of the office and describes its responsibilities and challenges. It emphasizes the importance of spirituality in the lives of elders. Straub beckons elders to embark on their leadership adventure together, fortifying their leadership through prayer, learning, discussion, mutual accountability, and other paths to spiritual growth and encouragement. Their faithful eldership is a beacon for faithful congregations as elders' prayers become spiritual channels through which graces unfold in congregational life. That exciting prospect lies at the heart of eldership and of Straub's inspiring insights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse on the Official Relations of New Testament Elders Frequent reference is made both in the Old and the new testaments to the elders of the Jews; from whose ecclesiasti cal constitution both the title and the omce appear to have been derived, and thence transferred to the new dis pensation. God had consecrated the family of Aaron and the tribe of Levi for official service under the mosaic econo my. But then they were priests, and their concern was with the temple and the altar. The temple was at J erusao lem; there sacrifices were od'ored, and the whole ritual was presented in' full and distinct form. But all the Jews did not live in Jerusalem, neither were sacrifices the only acts of religious worship they were required to render. They had secial ordinances of a much more limited character, and suited to the circumstances of their local situation. In ad, dition to the temple, synagogues were erected throughout Judea; - they were to be found in every town and village, or wherever a regular assembly Of convenient size could be collected. In these synagogues prayer and praise were Of fered up, and the scriptures were read and expounded, -rev ligious services, which, you know, characterize the worship of believers in the new testament church.
