Download or read book THE CURRENT DISTRIBUTIONS IN A VELOCITY-MODULATED BRILLOUIN-FOCUSED ELECTRON BEAM. written by and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radio-frequency current distributions in a Brillouin-focused electron beam that has been velocity-modulated by a gridless-gap cavity are described. A review is presented of the small signal theory of ideal Brillouin beams in addition to small- and large-signal experimental results. An approximation is made to predict the RF current contours in a Brillouin beam whose d-c current- density profile resembles a trapezoid. The predictions of this theory are found to agree well with actual beam behavior in that both the thickness and the amplitude of the RF current density ring around the beam vary with the depth of modulation alpha when alpha is very small. The large-signal results show that an average non linear force is present, which causes the average diameter of the modulated beam to be smaller at some axial positions than the diameter of the d- c Brillouin beam. In addition, the large-signal results show that at least two- second- and two third-harmonic waves are present on the beam. One of these in each case is the component arising from the square-wave current-density wave at the edges of the beam. The other wave in each case is thought to have arisen from the nonlinear drive in the high alternating fields in the cavity gap.

Download or read book Phase Relationships in a Nonlinear Velocity-modulated Electron Beam written by Peter Erwin Engler and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental differential equation describing the polarization of an electron in an infinitely wide electron beam is derived. The modified fundamental differential equation is formulated into a fourth-degree non-linear partial differential equation. Terms involving the polarization raised to powers higher than the third are neglected and the remaining third-degree equation is separated into 3 linear differential equations by successive approximations. The solution to the differential equation for the first-degree polarization is substituted into the equation for the second-degree polarization to yield the driving terms of that equation. The second-degree polarization is composed of dc and first-harmonic frequency terms. The procedure is repeated and the fundamental-frequency terms of the third-degree polarization are computed. The component of the third-degree fundamental-frequency polarization in quadrature with the first-degree polarization describes the nonlinear phase shift behavior of the electron beam. (Author).

Book Synopsis Investigation of Large-signal Klystron and Traveling-wave Devices by :
Download or read book Investigation of Large-signal Klystron and Traveling-wave Devices written by and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general nonlinear multi-dimensional interaction theory is employed to analyze Brillouin focused beams in klystrons and traveling-wave amplifiers. Harmonic currents and beam spread are found for a number of different situations. Closed-form solutions are being sought for the nonlinear equations. Beam stability in the presence of r-f and velocity distribution effects on the start-oscillation conditions of BWO's are two specific problems where these solutions are to be applied. Experimental programs to check these analyses are described. An appropriate taper on a ring-and-bar circuit for obtaining phase-focused operation is presented. Progress on the magnetron injection gun computer program is described. The trajectory starting problem appears to be solved, while further work on establishing the proper current density from the cathode is indicated. Provisions in the relativistic electron beam computer program for self-induced effects are also described. The status of the UHF helix-magnetron injection gun device is summarized. Performance data of the gun in a beam analyzer is presented. (Author).
