Book Synopsis Evaluating Vehicle Emissions Inspection and Maintenance Programs by : National Research Council
Download or read book Evaluating Vehicle Emissions Inspection and Maintenance Programs written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-12-16 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emissions inspection and maintenance (I/M) programs subject vehicles to periodic inspections of their emission control systems. Despite widespread use of these programs in air-quality management, policy makers and the public have found a number of problems associated with them. Prominent among these issues is the perception that emissions benefits and other impacts of I/M programs have not been evaluated adequately. Evaluating Vehicle Emissions Inspection and Maintenance Programs assesses the effectiveness of these programs for reducing mobile source emissions. In this report, the committee evaluates the differences in the characteristics of motor vehicle emissions in areas with and without I/M programs, identifies criteria and methodologies for their evaluation, and recommends improvements to the programs. Most useful of all, this book will help summarize the observed benefits of these programs and how they can be redirected in the future to increase their effectiveness.

Book Synopsis Reusable Launch Vehicle by : Committee on Reusable Launch Vehicle Technology and Test Program
Download or read book Reusable Launch Vehicle written by Committee on Reusable Launch Vehicle Technology and Test Program and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-01-22 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key to opening the use of space to private enterprise and to broader public uses lies in reducing the cost of the transportation to space. More routine, affordable access to space will entail aircraft-like quick turnaround and reliable operations. Currently, the space Shuttle is the only reusable launch vehicle, and even parts of it are expendable while other parts require frequent and extensive refurbishment. NASA's highest priority new activity, the Reusable Launch Vehicle program, is directed toward developing technologies to enable a new generation of space launchers, perhaps but not necessarily with single stage to orbit capability. This book assesses whether the technology development, test and analysis programs in propulsion and materials-related technologies are properly constituted to provide the information required to support a December 1996 decision to build the X-33, a technology demonstrator vehicle; and suggest, as appropriate, necessary changes in these programs to ensure that they will support vehicle feasibility goals.

Book Synopsis Development and Testing of Vehicle Software and its Influence on Sustainable Transport by : Antonio Colmenar-Santos
Download or read book Development and Testing of Vehicle Software and its Influence on Sustainable Transport written by Antonio Colmenar-Santos and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024-02-11 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book evaluates the contributions of the electronic control unit software of an electric vehicle on sustainability and society, such as the reduction of emissions during a product design and the improvements in the vehicle. A sustainable transport model is proposed, demonstrating its economic viability. By validating software in a more efficient way and adding new functionalities to the software to enhance driving efficiency, energy consumption can be significantly reduced. Therefore, software validation and development have a significant impact on sustainability. This book offers innovative validation solutions based on artificial intelligence techniques to reduce validation time and emissions. The impact of driving efficiency on sustainable transport models is studied in detail, making proposals to be considered in the current environmental policies under discussion within the European Union in order to improve the sustainability of transport models. Vehicles are becoming sophisticated electronic systems due to the fact that they are integrating a significant number of electronic control units. This trend will certainly continue in the year to come. Consequently, software validation techniques are a key element for car manufacturers in order to ensure the quality of the vehicle. This book contributes to these efforts.
