Book Synopsis Vehicle Operating Costs by : Andrew Chesher

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides information concerning the costs of transportation on non-urban highways and the relationships between these costs and characteristics of highways such as surface roughness, and vertical and horizontal geometry. The sources of the information presented here are four major road user cost studies performed between 1970 and 1982 in Kenya, the Caribbean, Brazil, and India. In these studies road user costs were investigated in considerable depth. Surveys of commercial road users were performed, surveys on a far larger scale than had been conducted prior to the 1970s. Large scale experiments were undertaken, aimed at determining the fuel consumption of cars, buses and light and heavy goods vehicles under alternative highway conditions, and considerable effort was devoted to obtaining data on vehicle speeds and their responses to highway conditions. The resulting body of knowledge concerning road users' costs is enormous, spanning three continents, diverse highway conditions and radically different economic environments.

Book Synopsis Estimating Texas Motor Vehicle Operating Costs by :

Book excerpt: A specific Vcost model was developed for Texas conditions based on a sophisticated fuel model for light duty vehicles, several excellent sources of secondary vehicle cost data, and the ability to measure heavy truck fuel consumption through both experimental and survey work. The basic model was designed to address the relatively narrow range of pavement roughness found on the Texas highway network and is free-flow, and does not accurately measure congestion effects. The team developed a vehicle classification scheme that was suitable for TxDOT planning and revenue forecasting. These resources led to the adoption of eight categories of light-duty vehicles and two heavy truck types. The current Texas fleet composition was determined from 2007 VTR data and was made a default for model use. Each cost item associated with the representative vehicle was calculated for each year of operation up to 20 years. Six main cost categories are included in the Vcost model: depreciation, financing, insurance, other fixed costs, repair and maintenance, and fuel. These costs fall into two categories: fixed and variable costs. The Vcost model can provide operating cost estimates for each specific representative vehicles as well as fleets of vehicles. The model allows the user to change key parameters so that the cost calculation is specific to any particular situation, and can be updated as the economic or technological landscape changes. The model was designed to provide the user with a program that looked, felt, and operated in a similar fashion to most Windows programs and would be intuitive for the typical TxDOT user.

Book Synopsis Automobile Operating Cost and Mileage Studies by : Robley Winfrey
Download or read book Automobile Operating Cost and Mileage Studies written by Robley Winfrey and published by . This book was released on 1931 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bulletin presents the operating costs of 1,675 automobiles, the records for which were submitted by individual Iowa owners and by various state highway departments, from which estimates of average costs are determined for 10 classes of cars for annual mileages of 3,000 to 25,000 miles. Similar cost estimates are made for a car representing the composite of the 1930 Iowa registration, Estimates of mileage, market value depreciation, average life, and average age are given. The Iowa license fee and gasoline tax is shown for each class on a ton-mile basis. Registrations, new car sales, and number of cars operated daily are shown for 1900 to 1920.
Book Synopsis Vehicle Operating Costs Related to Operating Mode, Road Design, and Pavement Condition by : BC. Butler
Download or read book Vehicle Operating Costs Related to Operating Mode, Road Design, and Pavement Condition written by BC. Butler and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1979 through 1982 the Federal Highway Administration contracted with the Texas Research and Development Foundation to update vehicle operating cost tables. In this research five components of vehicle operating cost were studied, including fuel consumption, maintenance and repair, oil consumption, tire consumption, and depreciation. The approach used in this research was to identify the consumption involved for each of these parameters and then to price these components to obtain vehicle operating costs. This approach allows future updating of the vehicle operating cost tables from simply knowing the changes in prices. This is highly desirable since component consumption changes much less frequently than the unit prices. The results of this research present a new set of table relating vehicle operating costs to the serviceability index of pavements and the geometric design features of the roads. The component consumption tables were established for constant speed and speed change cycle operations.

Download or read book Vehicle Speeds and Operating Costs written by Thawat Watanatada and published by Johns Hopkins University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Road-user costs are the largest cost elements in road transport. Improvements in road conditions can yet pay substantial dividends by reducing vehicle operating costs. Expressing vehicle operating costs in relation to road characteristics--geometry and pavement condition--is the logical approach. For certain cost components, especially fuel consumption, the required data can be obtained by controlled experiments. Vehicle maintenance costs utilizing extensive road-user surveys are needed. This volume takes an aggregate-mechanistic view of vehicle speed and operating costs under free flow conditions. Basing their analysis on the mechanistic principles of propulsion and motion as well as on postulated assumptions of driver behavior, the authors arrive at predictions at three levels of detail, ranging from a simulation method for use in detailed geometric design at the link level to an aggregate method for use in investment planning at the sectoral level. The models were estimated using the comprehensive database collected in the Brazil-UNDP-World Bank highway research project and were validated along with data sets from India. One of the significant contributions to highway economics research made in this study is the probabilistic limiting velocity approach to steady-state speed prediction, which, combined with the aggregate-mechanistic methodology, will provide a possible basis for future research on the far more complex problem of operating costs under congested conditions.
