After an initial consideration of the vegetation components in the two States, major geographic areas and vegetation zones are detailed. Descriptions of each vegetation zone include composition and succession, as well as discussion of variations associated with environmental gradients. Three chapters treat the forested zones found in the two States. Major emphasis is on the distinctive mesic temperate forests found in western Washington and northwestern Oregon. The interior valley forests, shrub lands, and prairies found between the Coast and Cascade Ranges in western Oregon are treated in a single chapter as are subalpine and alpine mosaics of tree-dominated and meadow communities. Unusual habitats, such as areas of recent vulcanism, serpentines, and ocean strand, are individually described. Soils, geology, and climate are considered in broad outline in an early chapter and in greater detail within discussions of individual geographic areas and vegetation zones. Appendices are included for definition of the various soil types, scientific and common plant names, and a subject index. An extensive bibliography is included to direct the reader to other references.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Disturbance and Forest Health in Oregon and Washington Citizens, forest owners, and resource managers must all be come active to solve forest health problems in Oregon and Washington. Without cooperation and interaction among groups with diverse and opposing viewpoints, future needs and desires for products and services from regional forests will not be met. East of the Cascades, forest fuel reduction, thinning over stocked stands, and changing species are needed to reduce the risks of uncontrollable, stand-replacing wildfires and widespread insect outbreaks. West of the Cascades, the continued introduction of exotic insects, diseases, and plants threaten the existence of native forests and, without continual vigilance, chances of establish ment and spread are much greater. Air pollution, unless controlled and reduced in the Puget Sound area and the Willamette Valley, will affect increasing numbers of forest species, influencing their ability to grow and reproduce. On both sides of the Cascades, the incidence and severity of many native insects and diseases is closely linked to forest management. Awareness of the effects of different manage ment activities on insects and diseases is essential to achieve desired forest conditions. Forest management, forest health monitoring, research, and public education are the tools needed to create and main tain the forests that are so important to the people of Oregon and Washington. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Flora of the Northwest This book was written primarily on account of the great need for some such work in the schools of the Northwest. Geographically it covers Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and the coastal region of south western British Columbia. The usual limited spring flora omits so many plants that the user must know beforehand the name of the particular plant whose name he is seeking, in order that he may find by the index whether the book includes or omits it. This is absurd. Usually there is a species de scription, whose necessary brevity often makes it do equally well for a number of species not included. In this book the keys are complete so far as they go, except in. A very few genera of grasses, in which the limits are expressly stated. This will enable teachers to hand out for analysis plants they do not them selves know. This is specially desirable in the Northwest, where teachers may move to other schools only a hundred miles away and find a tremendous change in the flora. It is unreasonable in the Northwest to expect teachers of botany to know all the local plants, even though they may have specialized in the subject in an under graduate course.
