Book excerpt: In 1993 the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) became involved in the United States Geological Survey, Division of Biological Resources/National Park Service (USGS/NPS) National Vegetation Mapping Program by serving as an interagency peer reviewer. This initial involvement led to discussions on vegetation mapping alternatives for military lands and a completed vegetation map for Fort Benning, GA. To validate the vegetation map and help managers realize its potential use as a natural resources and military training management tool, an accuracy assessment was conducted. Armed with a field key to the plant communities on the Fort Benning map and a project sampling design, intensive fieldwork was conducted to collect the data required to assess the vegetation map's accuracy. Field data was analyzed and an error analysis of the map was completed. This report includes lessons learned and recommendations for future vegetation mapping and accuracy assessment projects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise, much-needed guide takes readers step by step through planning and executing field work associated with many different types of remote sensing projects. Remote sensing texts and research reports typically focus on data-analytic techniques while offering a dearth of information on procedures followed in the field. In contrast, this book provides clear recommendations for defining field work objectives, devising a valid sampling plan, finding locations using GPS, and selecting and using effective measurement techniques for field reflectance spectra and for studies of vegetation, soils, water, and urban areas. Appendices feature sample field note forms, an extensive bibliography on advanced and specialized methods, and online metadata sources.

Book excerpt: In a rapidly changing world, there is an ever-increasing need to monitor the Earth’s resources and manage it sustainably for future generations. Earth observation from satellites is critical to provide information required for informed and timely decision making in this regard. Satellite-based earth observation has advanced rapidly over the last 50 years, and there is a plethora of satellite sensors imaging the Earth at finer spatial and spectral resolutions as well as high temporal resolutions. The amount of data available for any single location on the Earth is now at the petabyte-scale. An ever-increasing capacity and computing power is needed to handle such large datasets. The Google Earth Engine (GEE) is a cloud-based computing platform that was established by Google to support such data processing. This facility allows for the storage, processing and analysis of spatial data using centralized high-power computing resources, allowing scientists, researchers, hobbyists and anyone else interested in such fields to mine this data and understand the changes occurring on the Earth’s surface. This book presents research that applies the Google Earth Engine in mining, storing, retrieving and processing spatial data for a variety of applications that include vegetation monitoring, cropland mapping, ecosystem assessment, and gross primary productivity, among others. Datasets used range from coarse spatial resolution data, such as MODIS, to medium resolution datasets (Worldview -2), and the studies cover the entire globe at varying spatial and temporal scales.

Book excerpt: This technical reference applies to monitoring situations involving a single plant species, such as an indicator species, key species, or weed. It was originally developed for monitoring special status plants, which have some recognized status at the Federal, State, or agency level because of their rarity or vulnerability. Most examples and discussions in this technical reference focus on these special status species, but the methods described are also applicable to any single-species monitoring and even some community monitoring situations. We thus hope wildlife biologists, range conservationists, botanists, and ecologists will all find this technical reference helpful.

To do this the examiner must consider objectives, life form (grass, forb, shrub, or tree), distribution patterns of individuals of a species, distribution patterns between species (community mosaic pattern), efficiency of data collection from an economic standpoint, and accuracy and precision of the data.
