Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Kantian worldview, which always underlay all religion, philosophy, and art, could not have been the eternal truth if it did not emerge more or less clearly everywhere that the human mind penetrated into the depths, as this occurred, for example, in India through the Upanishads of the Vedas and the Vedanta based on them and in Greece through Parmenides and Plato. To consider both these phenomena in the light of the Kantian philosophy is the task that we have set ourselves here." - Paul Deussen Vednata, Plato, and Kant is a new translation. The book presents a defense of Shankara's Advaita Vedānta philosophy as well as an elucidation of the Greek Idealistic doctrines of Parmenides and Plato. In all these schools of thought, Deussen detects a similar basic understanding of the world as a mere appearance distinct from Ideal Reality. He approximated this understanding to the Kantian notion of 'things in themselves' (Dinge-an-sich) and noted a degeneration of the original Vedic and Upanishadic worldview in the philosophies that followed, such as the Sāmkhya and Buddhism, just as there was a corruption of Parmenides' doctrine of Being in the philosophy of his pupil Zeno. Similarly, he believes that Kant's revolutionary Idealistic insights in Germany were also distorted by the post-Kantian thinkers and not generally understood in their original form except by Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860), who developed the doctrine of the world as a mere representation produced by the innate intuitive forms within the Intellect - Space, Time, and Causality. Includes a preface by Alexander Jacob (Translator)
Book Synopsis PHILOSOPHY OF THE VEDANTA AND THE VENDANTASARA by : Paul Deussen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Known as the oldest philosophical texts of the world, the Vedas have always aroused much scholarly curiosity among people from all disciplines. Esteemed philosophy scholar Paul Deussen rigorously and systematically studied the Vedanta. Using the premises of Plato and Kant to solve the fundamental problem of causality posed to the Advaita Vedanta, he paved the way for the dialogue between Indian and western philosophy. Although Deussen found the Advaitic principles to be of the greatest value to mankind, he objectively examines the conflicts within Sankara s thought in The Philosophy of the Vedanta and the Vedantasara. A full compilation of Sadananda Yogendra s Vedantasara is provided with an in-depth enquiry into each verse accompanied by critical notes from various intellectual sources. The Sanskrit verses have also been given in their original script.

This book was released on 2011-09-26 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immanuel Kant's three Critiques—Critique of Pure Reason, Critique of Practical Reason and Critique of Judgment—have been the cornerstone of Western philosophy. While the West has extensively debated on these works, Indian perspectives on them have been few and far between. This book is a singular example of how Western philosophy can be creatively interpreted and appropriated from the perspective of Indian philosophy. Delving into concepts like free will, knowledge of the self and the role of imagination in knowledge, Bhattacharyya integrates the three Critiques showing their interconnections and presents their essential theses. He extends the meaning of concepts like knowing and experience from the standpoint of Nyaya and Advaita schools to evaluate judgments and certainties, thereby extending the domain of Kantian insight. Hailed as one of the most original and creative Indian academic philosophers of the twentieth century, Bhattacharyya explains, amplifies and transcreates, moving beyond Kant's original texts, without distorting the essential tenets of Kant's philosophy. With detailed notes and annotations as well as a critical introduction, this translation presents a radical departure from traditional analyses of Kant.

Book Synopsis The Essence of Vedanta by : Brian Hodgkinson
Download or read book The Essence of Vedanta written by Brian Hodgkinson and published by Arcturus Publishing. This book was released on 2006-06-05 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All students of philosophy will relate to the concepts of selfhood, nature, karma and liberation. Here are views and answers to the most important questions. How is self identified? What are the causes and effects in nature? Are our actions determined? What is freedom for a human being? What happens after death? The Essence of Vedanta examines issues of existential philosophy from the viewpoint of the Veda, the most ancient and sacred of Indian scriptures, and also outlines the work of Sankara, the early medieval master of Vedanta's dominant form, Advaita. The foundation of all Vedic teaching lies in the universal truth that human nature reflects God (Brahman), who exists in every living thing. An individual needs no salvation therefore, because he or she is never lost, but merely living in ignorance of his or her true nature. Brian Hodgkinson offers readers insight into, and discussion of, the fundamental questions of the Vedic system concerning self-realization, such as knowledge versus ignorance, the self, consciousness, free will, nature, time, the mind, language, law and society. His fascinating appraisal reveals the profound nature of the Veda and its practices. With its tolerance of other faiths, and ultimately uplifting spiritual message, it is a discipline that chimes with our 21st century needs and preoccupations.

Book Synopsis Kant's Platonic Revolution in Moral and Political Philosophy by : T. K. Seung

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than two centuries, Kant scholars have operated on the unquestioned premise that Kant's three Critiques offered a systematic exposition of his philosophy. But this unitary view, argues T. K. Seung, is gravely mistaken. In Kant's Platonic Revolution in Moral and Political Philosophy, Seung shows how each of the three works represents a major reformulation of the initial commitment to Platonism which Kant had made in his Inaugural Dissertation of 1770. For Kant, Platonic Forms are the basic ideas for constructing moral, aesthetic, and political norms and standards. This is the essence of Kant's Platonic constructivism, which Seung explicates with comparisons to other programs of construction, such as Hobbesian conventionalism and Hegelian historicism. Finally, he clarifies the link between constructivism and deconstruction.

Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: "The Ethics of Immanuel Kant: Metaphysics of Morals - Philosophy of Law & The Doctrine of Virtue + The Critique of Practical Reason: Theory of Moral Reasoning + Perpetual Peace (Unabridged)" is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysics of Morals, also known as the Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals, is the first of Kant's mature works on moral philosophy and remains one of the most influential in the field. Kant conceives his investigation as a work of foundational ethics-one that clears the ground for future research by explaining the core concepts and principles of moral theory and showing that they are normative for rational agents. Kant aspires to nothing less than this: to lay bare the fundamental principle of morality and show that it applies to us. The Metaphysics of Morals is a work of political and moral philosophy by Kant. The work is divided into two main parts, "The Science of Right, which deals with the rights that people have or can acquire, and the Doctrine of Virtue, which deals with the virtues they ought to acquire." The Critique of Practical Reason is the second of Immanuel Kant's three critiques and deals with his moral philosophy. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) was a German philosopher, who, according to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is "the central figure of modern philosophy." Kant argued that fundamental concepts of the human mind structure human experience, that reason is the source of morality, that aesthetics arises from a faculty of disinterested judgment, that space and time are forms of our understanding, and that the world as it is "in-itself" is unknowable. Contents: Fundamental Principles of the Metaphysic of Morals The Metaphysics of Morals Philosophy of Law (The Science of Right) The Metaphysical Elements of Ethics The Critique of Practical Reason: Theory of Moral Reasoning Perpetual Peace (A Philosophical Essay).
