Excerpt from book: THE GOOD FELLOWSHIP CLUB HOUSE The Good Fellowship Club House A comfortable, two story bungalow, behind the Main Building, is the home of the Good Fellowship Club of Vassar College. Its gray stucco walls, shingled roof and casement windows are half hidden by the trees that screen it from the conservatory on the left and the laundry buildings on the right. A broad porch, furnished with flower boxes, hammocks, and easy chairs, runs along the west and south sides. From the porch French windows open into the library and the large sunny living room, made homelike by an open fireplace, window seats, a piano and a victrola in the alcove. Wide doors lead into the dining room and the library. The plain tinted walls and dark wood trimmings are a pleasant background for mission and wicker furniture. Books and magazines, much thumbed, lie on the tables. Photographs of recent Club House plays are on the little bulletin board opposite the loudly ticking clock under the stairs. Upstairs there are the supervisor's rooms, class rooms, and an infirmary; in the basement, the laundry, with several tubs, and the kitchen with a domestic science equipment. The Club House, in its regular routine of balanced work and play, makes use of all its resources. Lessons are given by college students to club members during the regular college study hours, except when students have classes or the maids have work in the halls. Music is a very popular subject, and keeps the two pianos in constant demand. Other subjects taught are elementary English, advanced English, arithmetic, algebra, geometry, German, French, Latin, typewriting, book-keeping, drawing, writing, botany, and physiology. A cooking class of eight or ten girls meets once a week under a trained instructor from outside the college. With the super..
Download or read book Performing Math written by Andrew Fiss and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-13 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performing Math tells the history of expectations for math communication—and the conversations about math hatred and math anxiety that occurred in response. Focusing on nineteenth-century American colleges, this book analyzes foundational tools and techniques of math communication: the textbooks that supported reading aloud, the burnings that mimicked pedagogical speech, the blackboards that accompanied oral presentations, the plays that proclaimed performers’ identities as math students, and the written tests that redefined “student performance.” Math communication and math anxiety went hand in hand as new rules for oral communication at the blackboard inspired student revolt and as frameworks for testing student performance inspired performance anxiety. With unusual primary sources from over a dozen educational archives, Performing Math argues for a new, performance-oriented history of American math education, one that can explain contemporary math attitudes and provide a way forward to reframing the problem of math anxiety.

Download or read book Intimate Communities written by Sherrie A. Inness and published by Popular Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public image of the college woman of the Progressive Era was transformed from that of a homely, sexless oddity, doomed to spinsterhood, to that of a vibrant, attractive, athletic young woman, who would eventually marry. This study shows how the many popular representations of student life at women's colleges during that time not only described the college woman, but also helped to constitute her. Download or read book The Student written by Michael S. Roth and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2023-09-12 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the president of Wesleyan University, an illuminating history of the student, spanning from antiquity to Zoom In this sweeping book, Michael S. Roth narrates a vivid and dynamic history of students, exploring some of the principal models for learning that have developed in very different contexts, from the sixth century BCE to the present. Beginning with the followers of Confucius, Socrates, and Jesus and moving to medieval apprentices, students at Enlightenment centers of learning, and learners enrolled in twenty-first-century universities, he explores how students have been followers, interlocutors, disciples, rebels, and children becoming adults. There are many ways to be a student, Roth argues, but at their core is developing the capacity to think for oneself by learning from others, and thereby finding freedom. In an age of machine learning, this book celebrates the student who develops more than mastery, cultivating curiosity, judgment, creativity, and an ability to keep learning beyond formal schooling. Roth shows how the student throughout history has been someone who interacts dynamically with the world, absorbing its lessons and creatively responding to them.
