A dead body in a very ugly sportscoat—and matching socks. The dead man is a stranger to Perry, but that's not much of a comfort; how did a strange dead man get in a locked flat at the isolated Alton Estate in the wilds of the "Northeast Kingdom" of Vermont? Perry turns to help from "tall, dark and hostile" former navy SEAL Nick Reno—but is Reno all that he seems?
Book Synopsis Tilting at Windmills by : Phillip Edmonds

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up until the late 1960s the story of Australian literary magazines was one of continuing struggle against the odds, and of the efforts of individuals, such as Clem Christesen, Stephen Murray-Smith, and Max Harris. During that time, the magazines played the role of 'enfant terrible', creating a space where unpopular opinions and writers were allowed a voice. The magazines have very often been ahead of their time and some of the agendas they have pursued have become 'central' to representations, where once they were marginal. Broadly, 'little' magazines have often been more influential than their small circulations would first indicate, and the author's argument is that they have played a valuable role in the promotion of Australian literature.

As an historian, she ventured into far corners of Afghanistan and did pioneering work on Russian contacts with Australia. As `a farmer by feeling¿, she ran the family orchard and then cattle stud. Book Synopsis Diagoras of Melos by : Marek Winiarczyk
Download or read book Diagoras of Melos written by Marek Winiarczyk and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diagoras of Melos (lyric poet, 5th c. B.C.) has received special attention for some time now because he was regarded as a radical atheist and the author of a prose work on atheism in antiquity. He was notorious for revealing and ridiculing the Eleusinian Mysteries and was condemned for impiety at Athens. The present book evaluates Diagoras’ biography and shows that he cannot be considered to have been an atheist in the modern sense.
Book Synopsis Reconciling Ancient and Modern Philosophies of History by : Aaron Turner
Download or read book Reconciling Ancient and Modern Philosophies of History written by Aaron Turner and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The distinction between ancient and modern modes of historical thought is characterized by the growing complexity of the discipline of history in modernity. Consequently, the epistemological and methodological standard of ancient historiography is typically held as inferior against the modern ideal. This book serves to address this apparent deficit. Its scope is three-fold. Firstly, it aims at encountering ancient modes of historical and historiographical thought within the province of their own horizon. Secondly, this book considers the possibility of a dialogue between ancient and modern philosophies of history concerning the influence of ancient historical thought on the development of modern philosophy of history and the utility of modern philosophy of history in the interpretation of ancient historiography. Thirdly, this book explores the continuities and discontinuities in historical method and thought from antiquity to modernity. Ultimately, this volume demonstrates the necessity of re-evaluating our assumptions about the relation of ancient and modern historical thought and lays the groundwork for a more fruitful dialogue in the future.
