Book excerpt: This book examines relations which hold between morphosyntactic form and communicative function in discourse by examining form-function correlations of noninterrogative questions in ordinary English conversation. So-called nontypical declarative and nonclausal questions are identified functionally. The role morphosyntax plays in the production and interpretation of these forms as doing questioning is then considered. Speakers are shown to use specific patterns of morphosyntactic marking to enable recipients to interpret noninterrogatives as functional questions. Explanations for morphosyntactic patterns found in the data are stated in terms of discourse use.

These are utterances with a variable interrogative tag, like It's peculiar writing, isn't it, and the semi-variable tag innit, such as Nice, innit. The aim is to provide a corpus-based, comprehensive semantic-pragmatic typology of British English tag questions. Compared to existing descriptions, the proposed typology is novel in three ways. Firstly, whereas almost all existing typologies are single-layered classifications, the functions of tag questions are categorized into two parallel dimensions of interpersonal meaning: the speech function and the stance layer. Secondly, semantic generalizations are proposed for clusters of grammatical, intonational and conversational properties. Thirdly, the bottom-up description is based on a sizeable amount of authentic, spontaneous conversations, which are analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively.

This thesis has the objective to analyze questionnaires with the main focus on the linguistic description of questions. Whereas a lot of research on questionnaires from a social science perspective and a marketing perspective can be found, linguistic research on questionnaires is rare. The research question of this thesis can be formulated as follows: What are the differences between questionnaires used in personal face-to-face interviews, telephone interviews and self-administered questionnaires and how are these differences reflected in language? Thus, several different questionnaires (cf. corpus) have been analyzed and compared. Following the introduction in chapter one, chapter two of the thesis is dedicated to marketing research. The purpose of surveys is explained as well as the sampling procedure and the pretest. This thesis focuses on primary research. Chapter three explains the symbolic interaction theory for social research. This question-answer model describes the interview situation. Chapter four is dedicated to the three different survey techniques (personal interviews, telephone interviews and self-administered questionnaires). Each of them will be discussed in detail. Chapter five deals with response effects in questionnaires and explains the influence of question words, question form, question structure and question topic on responses. Whereas chapter six focuses on the macrostructure (overall structure) of questionnaires, chapter seven focuses on the mircostructure. Question form (open-ended vs. closed questions), sentence types and sentence form will be discussed as well as wh-interrogatives and the you attitude . In chapter eight a summary of the language differences is provided for each type of questionnaire separately. Finally, in the conclusion in chapter nine, some final remarks on the topic will be made. Book excerpt: This volume aims to fill two gaps in pragmatic research into English as a lingua franca (ELF): the investigation of conflict talk and the incorporation of a multimodal perspective into the analysis of ELF interactions. To this end, multimodal conversation analysis is used, combined with the perspective of politeness theory. The author shows how interactants use multimodal resources to manage competitive overlaps, disagreement, and third-party complaints in casual ELF conversations among friends. In doing so, the notion of cooperativeness is re-examined, and the appropriateness of an intercultural approach to analyzing multimodal resources in ELF interactions is demonstrated.
